CROC - 24Hr.....Stolen Bike
Bloody hell.... of all the evil things to happen while at an event. I had the extreme misfortune to have my bike and camelback stolen while on my way to the transition to begin my double night lap.
Stopped by the ammenities block for a nature break only to come out and find my bike and pack gone.
Well lit, and a fair amount of passing human traffic. Just so shocking that goons out there will do this kind of thing.
Do I take solace in that it was just completely random? 2900 competitors and bikes and it was me that was there just at that moment.... I dont know it still hurts.
My two laps prior were good and the red lap was something I could have done all day!! Mind you I didnt mind the blue either. Start lap of 1:08 for the Blue and a 49min for the red were respectable.
It was dusty as hell and the dust was like quicksand in parts! Berms? No just piles of fine dust in some cases.
Pretty much spoiled my weekend. Awful feeling packing the car and driving home without my pride and joy.
Mobile Phone - Gone
New lights and batteries - Gone. The labour of love building my own lights for their first race outing
New Cassette - Gone
Just serviced Forks - Gone. Thank god I didnt buy new ones!!!
Camelback, spares, first aid, etc... Gone
Brown Stumpjumper, small frame, stock as, well used. Lost in Canberra.

Don't suppose you have a serial number for the frame you could post up do you, just on the off chance someone sees it on the usual sale sites?
Mate, I'm lost for words and really feel for you. It sounds like a targeted operation preying on tired bikers in the dark, with their minds focused on other things. The number of times I have left my bike unattended at the end of an event. thinking we are all one happy family - I'll be more careful from now on. I hope you have alearted the event organisers.
Did you complete your allocated laps?
Sorry to hear that your bike was knicked. Fukcing low life they are lurking in the bushes outside the toilets.
At least now you have a good reason to get a new bike.
Peter
Have done or will be doing all the usual things after a theft...I have the serial details someplace and will post them shortly.
You know, I rode around the venue, out to the main road hoping to spot something and watching for suspicious activity and there were literally hundreds of unattended bikes around the place and at the spot mine got nicked, many other did exactly what I did.... with much nicer/pricier bikes than mine.
Just opportunistic bozo's who will probably leave it in a shed cos its "hot". Completely Daft.
There were reports of people out at parts of the race circuit carrying on so who knows??
My bike is precious to me, but hey, its a few years old and well loved if you know what I mean, it aint a great prize for a thief. I think I was just totally unlucky to be at that spot at that wrong time.
I was hoping that the thieves would use my mobile, thus building a bunch of connections that might help cops with investigation or at least give them some incentive to investigate. But of course I have security and once they turned it off, no more calls in or out.
Thanks all, appreciate it.
to hear that. I've had items stolen in the past and also had my place broken into a few years ago. It's such an invasion of privacy. And as you say, it's not just the $$$$ value but the fact that you've put time and effort into something.
I am so sorry to hear that Craig. That sucks big time. I think I would be in tears if anything was to happen to my Norco, so you must be really hurting right about now. I hope that you get your bike back. Was it insured? As Peter said, I hope you can quickly get a new one. That Six is beckoning.
Thanks all for your kind thoughts. I really find it hard to accept that it could happen this way or that its happened at all. Of all the bikes and people around.... and I didnt get to do my lap!
Very empty feeling driving home without my ride.
Craig
I only just saw this.
That's horrendous. And what a place for it to happen. It's quite bizzare really.
I know how you loved that bike (well, we all love our bikes)
What can I say
Bloody hell. Let's hope you can find a nice replacement or something.
Bloody hell. I can imagine how you felt when you realised it was gone.
Bastards
thats crap, there are always stories of thefts at these sort of events, and probably more that go unreported. In our case we had 5 x $3000ish bikes, plus each had a garmin gps and a full set of ayup lights, so upwards of $4000 value per bike, and we had them sitting around at all hrs totally unsupervised and unlocked. I think from now on i will make sure they are all locked, our luck can only last so long.
And what you did (leaving bike outside the loo) would have been done by nearly every rider at some point over the weekend, i did it myself a few times.
Sorry for your loss, hope you get a suitable replacement
Don
In the Wild West didn't they hang horse thieves?
Sounds reasonable.
Sorry about your bike Craig.
I'll keep an eye out here in Canberra.
Did you report it to the organisers as well?
Mate not good, brings back feelings of when my shiny new snowboard got lifted from my home at Falls Creek many eons ago, thieves should have their hands cut off!
This might be a stretch but your best bet may be to have a look at your home and contents insurance, you might get lucky and be able to claim on it...
Best scenario is that it somehow turns up, you at least got a B bike to hit up the trails on?
