Details:

Its now all go with the official web site now up check it out here http://solo24hour.com.au/ .

Ok the race is almost upon us and we have quite a bit of nobmob interest and it looks like we should have a large contingent competing and supporting so it should be an awesome weekend. If you are going to enter hopefully you have been training your arse off if not you have a little more time to get organised but definitely not too much so get on that bike and go riding and if you don’t feel like a ride its called training so get out there and do some.

It’s on at Easter again this year being the 10,11,12 & 13th of April for 2009 with the race being run on the Saturday & Sunday. I didn’t finish last years race but I still had a great time where else do you get to ride your bike non stop if you chose for 24hrs. So just how much do you love to ride this is your chance to really test your endurance.

I will be there going solo on the singlespeed this time and plan to ride the whole race non stop it will be great to have some other nobmob silly buggers there so are you up for it you know you want to.

Who's in?
christine, dreggsy, GAZZA, Carlgroover, Damien, Beany, LadyToast, Supagav, Critty, v, Scott (11 riders)

Damien's picture

There was a largish cleared grassy area to the left as you come in the gate that would be big enough for everyone but iy may be a little far away from the action which doesnt bother me I was going to set up camp there

Critty's picture

I'll ask Whisperer if we can borrow his tarp. It was perfect for the Sydney 24!

I might have to look at a second light setup. Ay-up are out of stock of the 6 hour battery packs until
April 8th.

It looks like Sunday night around the campsite is a good idea. Do you have to be back for anything Dyl?

LadyToast's picture

Couldn't agree more, I won't feel like driving anywhere and I'm not even riding. Plus the idea of sinking a few is pretty attractive.

Critty - best book Monday off eh?

Is there any need for walkie talkies? I have a set that would work well for support purposes.

Critty's picture

Already booked! And I'll add some cold ones to the list.

Carlgroover's picture

I've considered using these to warn support crew that I'm coming in and to tell them what I need but haven't tried it. The lap times are fairly consistent so a good crew will know when you are due.
Monday is a public holiday.
John.

Carlgroover's picture

on the 5th of April to avoid a $30 late fee, be in quick.
Jeez, I'm glad it's not on this weekend with all this rain about Eye-wink
Sorry

Bikeboy's picture

The light drizzle will be appreciated at the Mont as it will just be enough to cut down the dust which was there yesterday .... well thats my hope anyway ( .4 mm yesterday , zero so far today ) And apart from that, Sparrow drains well , Unlike Majura .....anyone who did the Syd 24 would have to be washed away to get worse conditions anyway ...now i am off to get two sets of brake pads ...

LadyToast's picture

Ahh... fond memories of spending the night huddled around Damien's gas light sitting in 3 inches of water.... sniff

I hope nobody has to go through that again eh?

Bikeboy's picture

It was fun changing brake pads every lap and putting wet shoes / shorts back on !
And as it was the Sydney 14 hour , and the Mont 23 this weekend , i wonder when i will tackle a REAL 24 hour race ???
And no i am not doing the Majura solo 24 OR 6 Plus 6 Next weekend .....No ticker i am afraid ....
I will need to do that extra hour training

Supagav's picture

V and I will be heading down on friday morning as well with the plan of getting there before lunch as well.
Just make sure the support people bring warm gear for the weekend. sitting around freezing would not be pleasent! the riders wont notice it so much as they will be moving the whole time Eye-wink
Can I book a small place under someones tarp too please...
I will make sure there are a few beers for sun as well.

Scott's picture

The rules section on the site explains how transition works. The charging area is 15 / 20 metres from transition so Critty should have no worries about charging lights if needed (i'll be going in every 3 hours to swap my niterider battery).

Stay over Sunday night. It's safer and you can help the great CORC volunteers take down some of the event stuff after the race.

The coffee guy works the whole night and has pasta etc for buying.

I started my taper last week. From now till the race it's just ride for fun, rather than ride to train.

See you all down there. Smile, laugh, cry and say g'day to the guy with glow sticks on the bike ; ).

Critty's picture

Does anyone know where I can get my hands on some Powerbar (caffeine free) gels?

The caffeine free flavors are vanilla, raspberry & plain.

Actually at this stage I am open to any suggestions on caffeine free gels
as it's getting close to race time and I don't want to end up with a bag of
snakes as my energy strategy Eye-wink

ALSO

I have 2 sets of Ay-up lights but only 2 X 6 hour battery packs.

I need another 2 (6hour) battery packs to make it through the night. Or a plan B for lighting.

The Ay-up website is out of stock until April 8th! (timing) If anyone has a spare battery pack or knows anyone who would be ok for me to borrow over Easter that would be great!

Thanks.

Brian's picture

I think woolworths stock the the powerbar range.

jdb's picture

I've got a 6 hour and 2 x 3 hour battery packs I can bring down.

Critty's picture

Thanks jdb, I really appreciate it. I was just working out how to strap my $15.95 bike light to my helmet Smiling

Are you racing?

GAZZA's picture

have you a problem with the stuff? it'll be my best friend at 4am!

jdb's picture

I'll be down there as part of the support crew

Critty's picture

I'm all for the caffeine, although I had a plan drawn up by a 40+ 24 champ who suggested only using
caffeine in the last 6 hours to avoid bonking. So at 6am I'll be smashing the caff till the end!

Critty's picture

Thanks, I just checked the Wooly's website and it looks like they only stock the caffeine variety.

Supagav's picture

Hey Critty, You can try the hammer gels i dont think they have caffeine your fav bike shop CBD stocks them....
Anyway What other food are you planning on using other than gels? I certainly wouldnt want to try and do a 24 on gels.....

Critty's picture

I'll be eating sandwiches (p&h), protein bars, some noodles around 6pm and
drinking electrolytes & protein revival drinks.

The program I'm following recommends using caffeine free gels until the
last 6 hours of the race.

I think it applies to someone like myself who is not a
regular coffee drinker.

Has anyone got any thoughts on this?

Critty's picture

I'll give CBD a call today! Cheers Gav.

anke13's picture

I use High 5 Gels, which come with and without caffeine. You should always alternate. I like those gels better, as their consistency is more liquid than the gels you get in bike stores, and are much easier to swallow. I also use the 4:1 Energy powder in my water.

You can get both at Fastgear in Bondi or online at www.fastgear.com.au. The shop is run by a guy called John Hill. He is an amazing tri-athlete and is always happy to give advice on nutrition.

If you are at the Mont this weekend, you can try the drink and gels and see how you go Smiling

Critty's picture

Cool, Fastgear is at the end of my street!! I've had a chat to the John before, he's really helpful and what an incredible
athlete. I'll head down this weekend, Thanks for the tip!

Damien's picture

I plan on setting up camp somwhere near the X maybe a little further up the hill.

Last years camp site was just below the right hand side of the trade area in the trees no grass and not a lot of room for a tarp.

Are you excited?
I am, I get so excited about this race every year,
Is your race plan down pat?
Do you have enough batteries?

I twisted my back pretty badly at the WWS 8hr at Yarramundi,
So i guess i wont be racing it will be more like riding with mates.

Also AY-Up do have stuff in stock and if you order now you can still get the extra bits by thursday.
I'll also be testing something new from them.

Also if you order from www.hammernutrition.com.au you should get your stuff by thursday.
The raspberry is not as nice as some of the others banana is nice.

Powerbars are available at coles in the special health food section.

christine's picture

you can get Gu without caffine you know - and i believe BA sell them...I was desperate for some Gu after Christmas and that was the only ones they had left.
George - can you please let me know the plan for our 'team?' I was thinking of coming down later on Friday as I will have to ride here first and I will be coming home Sunday - for some obscure reason mum seems to think that i would rather see my nephew and niece for easter eggs than bike ride in Canberra - I got 'the look' so had better be back for that...

Damien's picture

Absolutely you bet can’t wait.

I know I am not ready but I will be there on the SS to ride the whole thing no matter what probably / maybe anyway we will see how we go with the 32 x 21 on the 29er it should get me there in the slow but steady category.

Supagav's picture

Yeah V and I are getting close to been sorted now. Just got to get the food made and chilly bins packed, oh yeah and a few beers for me.
I am also on the look out for the extenstion power cord for the ayup lighting system if someone can help that would be great.

Just doing the final planning for lap times and projected laps etc as well.

We are pretty amped for the weekend. V is feeling strong and ready to race her race so all is looking good.

dangersean's picture

Supagav I have one and wont be using it next weekend.

I will pass it on to either christine or gazza to lend to you if you like?

jdb's picture

Gav, I'll have my ayup kit with extenstion power cord, Critty is using the batteries from the kit.

Supagav's picture

Dangersean thanks a bunch if you can pass it on to either of those two that would be great. I have one in the kit we got but it is faulty. It kept flickering during my last night lap at the mont and it eventually died.
right another box is ticked off.

dangersean's picture

i'll pass it onto them on Wednesday super social ride.
I've never used the extension, so its brand spanking new Eye-wink

Supagav's picture

Mine one was brand new as well. It developed a loose connection during the night at the mont and produced a horrible flickering which drove me crazy. I was trying it out before V used it on the solo 24 this weekend. Im glad I found the problem now not in 6 days time....
It means we can reduce the amount of weight on her head during the 12hrs of darkness. anything that helps to reduce the stress on the head/neck/shoulders has got to be good.

LadyToast's picture

Not long to wait... all you riders must be PUMPED by now. I'm hoping there will be time for me to at least get a lap in down there before the race, and really looking forward to meeting Beany at long last.

dreggsy's picture

I accidentally ordered banana sachets of the stuff instead of the jug, so if you guys want to try one come find me and I'll sort you out.
I ordered stuff just before my last post yesterday and it was on my desk this morning.

But if anyone is going to order stuff lemme know as I can order more stuff for you really cheap
as I might be ordering some more stuff.
remember "Retail is for suckers."

Get back to me quickly hopefully before 2pm today.

Carlgroover's picture

I'd like to order 2kg of Mandarin/orange Heed Jason if I'm not too late.
Thanks John

dreggsy's picture

Sorry to put a reply here

Carlgroover I've ordered more stuff and your stuff is in it.

the other guys I don't know if he will add it as i was expecting the website to send me an email telling me i had a private message.
but I've told hammer about it and am waiting on his response.

if it does all happen i'll grab $ off you at the race,

I'll also be bringing 20 sets of avid juicy brake pads with me.

Scott's picture

In that case I'll borrow the Redline again ; ).

dreggsy's picture

but this is the only link i can find to it.

http://farkin.net/forums/attachment.php?attachme...

Damien's picture

Opps I better enter.

LadyToast's picture

There really aren't that many crazies entered are there?

Critty, looks like you have Fenz in your group - good luck, this will be life changing!!

John and Vanina, you've got a podium already! Smiling

Damien's picture

Its a nice sized event with 64 so far for the solo only the 6+6 dont count there will probably a few more late entries like me and on the day last minute entries as well hmm I didn’t see Rob or Rowan's names on the list.

Rob's picture

Hmmmm... well... I have some medical issues so am playing it by ear. I was never going to be serious but did want to come and be social, let us see what the weekend brings Smiling

Alysum's picture

I might go for a little ride at Majura Pines on Friday (not competing in the 24H), does anyone know whether the trails will be open? Will the circuit itself be open to the public?

Will any of you guys be going for a quick spin?

Thanks (sorry for all the questions!)
Tom

Carlgroover's picture

But you still have to finish a lap after 24 hours.
I'll be racing everyone there and trying to get into the top 10 overall (12th last year) also planning on doing my longest distance ride ever and I'm confident of beating the 330km I did at the Scott.

I've now done the last 9 mths of training for 24's and lost 7kg, got a better bike, got a fast spare bike instead of the VT, improved nutrition this year, bigger crew supporting me means faster pitstops and I'm more determined.

Planning 350km, real target 360km any more and I'll be a very happy bunny Smiling

Last year was about 84 solos, this year only about 65 so far but maybe there's more than just Damien still to enter.

LadyToast's picture

Alysum, I will be going to support Critty (and others if they need me) and am taking my bike so if there is a chance of a ride on the Friday after setting up camp I will take it for sure.
