looking for large pedals

hey guys

i need to get new pedals for my bike
at the moment ive only got the original default pedals, but i find theres not enough grip with them so im constantly slipping

i decided i dont want to get clips since im not doing any sort of road riding and i like to have my feet free in case i lose balance in corners so i can stick my foot out

so im just wondering what kinda pedals should i get.

so far ive only found this one, but there has to be more out there?

Didn't T7 have some flats on special last week? I notice they have the MX30 a little cheaper than Cell right now:

Few other models on there too, just look in the list:

For an idea of range you always have to visit an O/S store like Jenson or CRC. Here's Jenson's page of platforms for example:

I'm sure some of the hardcore riders will be along shortly to comment on how good these brands are Smiling

nice one, thanks for the links, ill check them out

id probably prefer to pay about $50 for decent pedals
i dont think i need to fork out over $100 for those shimano ones..

can anybody recommend a decent pair of pedals for about $50 ??

DMR pedals are meant to be reasonable?

What kind of riding are you going to use these pedals for? XC? Heavy technical riding? Downhill?

Substance's picture

only XC riding

Little-Ditty's picture

Most of these kinds of pedals will be fine for XC riding. Just remember that the larger the pins, the more they will grip your foot. Which is good. But if your foot comes off your pedal and it spins around and slaps you in the shin, it will draw serious blood. Which is bad.

You may want to consider shin guards wearing pedals like that. But, if you persevere without shin guards, you may get used to it. I did.

Make sure you buy sealed bearing pedals. Cheap ones for $50 or less don't have sealed bearings, and won't last very long.

I could also recommend that it is not just pedals that are useful for providing grip when using platform pedals. You may want to research some quality footwear. Any of these Five.10 shoes are good and will increase your grip on the pedals about 50%:

I use high cut shoes. But low cut would do fine for XC use.

I have had set of the V12 for over 10 years now on 3 different bikes and find they are basically bombproof. They do grip really well except yesterday went I a bit crazy on a drop off and my foot slipped due to not going putting my foot on the pedal flat, thus my shoe slipped of the edge of the pedal, causing the crankarm to spin round and made 2 great puncture marks on my shin. And man did it f***ing hurt!
I do have some shin pads, well knee and shin pads(sixsixone), which I am to wear in future.
I also done the clip ins thing with the shimano types for a few years and was always weary when wearing them and stopped me from doing bigger stuff, so I know where you are coming from.
Plus with the V12 you can replace the pins and service the bearing case. I was told though that this is only the case of the old ones.
I found my Vans and the V12 a great option, but this is only my opinion , so people out there, please do not crucify me Eye-wink

Substance's picture

cool, thanks for the tips

never really crossed my mind that those clips could smash my shins Laughing out loud
but i reckon i could put up with it...if i dont, ill just wear my shin pads

ill see what i can find in regards to sealed bearing pedals, any recommendations on pedals that have this?

Substance's picture

mtbasn.alex

are these the ones you have?

http://www.cyclelink.com.au/category901_1.htm

mtbasn.alex's picture

Yes, the comp version

Substance's picture

ok cool, they look good to me
but i know nothing about pedals (yet)

ill do some research and get back to you soon Smiling

why are you selling them?

mtbasn.alex's picture

ok no problem,

Selling because I won them as prize and use clipless pedals
so they're no use to me

jpack's picture

don't dismiss clipless pedals so quickly.
they are far more secure than any flat pedal,
allow a more power pedal stroke due to being able to push with one foot and pull with the other,
safer in the air as your feet won't slip out of the pedals.

I've been using clipless for 10 years and it's extremely rare to get into a situation where i can't unclip in a hurry. set the spring tension a bit looser and its easy to get out. i also never get the pedal coming around and smacking me in the shin or calf.

I do all sorts of riding, from XC to DH with the same shoes and clipless pedals.

As an alternative, you can get pedals which are clipless on one side and flat on the other.
eg. shimano pd m324 - http://www.shimano.com.au/publish/content/global...

Rob's picture

Ahhhh... dude... I know it's daunting, and you have to expect to fall over many times in silly situations while learning, but clipless really are the way to go for XC.

Well, as others have already said, at least don't dismiss them completely.

LadyToast's picture

Have to agree, I've had more falling over in front of people moments than pretty much everyone else because of clipless pedals, a classic last Wednesday night but they do work for all of the reasons above. I too was a disbeliever, having riden for many years on BMX, etc... The first few months can be pretty hard so if you are going to get some, get something decent. I still unclip on the really gnarly stuff so I have DX pedals which do both well but are a bit pricey and a bit heavier. Even Brian Lopes rides clipless most of the time, he knows what he's talking about.

If you want to stick with platforms I have a set of V8's you can have for a tenner, still in fully working order. I was keeping them for when I want to switch to platforms but it's just not going to happen now.

Substance's picture

oh decisions decisions!

i can see valid points for clipless and platforms

theres really only 1 way to resolve this dilema, and thats to try decent platforms and to try the clipless option
at least that way ill have the best of both worlds and i can then decide.

so i think i might as well start with the platforms, use those for a while then try out some clipless...

ladytoast, are these the v8's u have? http://torpedo7.com.au/products/DMPDCNNV8

LadyToast's picture

yup - thats them, but mine are quite a bit more battered than them Eye-wink I think they are still ok though, I can check them out if you are interested. Otherwise I would go for Alex's they sound pretty sweet.

Substance's picture

haha, ok

might as well go for alex's once since theyre brand new Sticking out tongue

but keep them safe just incase! Laughing out loud

Noel's picture

I use aggressive Funn Pedals (light flats), Five Ten Shoes (great grip), and 661 Vegi Shin guards (they are excellent and protect your shins from the spikes on the pedals, and snakes too).

I highly recommend getting a pair of Five-Tens.

See my pedals here: http://nobmob.com/node/4793

Substance's picture

holy crap noel

thats a nasty looking injury

im a bit surprised that the pedals can do that kinda injury.. :S :S

shin pads might be needed Sticking out tongue

Substance's picture

well i decided to buy alex's pedals to get me started in the journey of finding out what works best for me

so lets see how it all goes now Smiling

Noel's picture

Well take it easy Substance, those Dice ones look almost as nasty. The little 'holes' in my leg are not as bad as it CAN get. A ripping type injury can be much worse. I always have skins pads on, always*.. like this: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/SixSixOne_Vegg... to reduce the likelihood of an injury like this: http://nobmob.com/node/1755

*except in bed, and when I'm at the shops Smiling ok sometimes in bed but that's another story.

Substance's picture

fuk, thats pretty crazy

i defenitely wouldnt want to get an injury like that

i wont be able to buy them now, i might have to use my soccer shin pads for the moment, but wont that look a bit stupid Sticking out tongue

Rob's picture

Ain't as stupid as they look... or you could try hockey shin guards too.

Bernd's picture

soccer guards are better than no guards!!
