Hmmmm... I've been bushwalking in Nightcap National Park and it's hot and steamy. We went up to Protester Falls which IIRC was reached from a short walking path at the top of a rather steep dirt road. Guess worst case you could ride up and down this forest road.
I'll bet there's a swag of firetrail in Nightcap NP to explore. Certainly you should get a topo map of the area, but looking at the Google maps, you could park by Protester Falls and ride this 38Km clockwise loop:

Or something like this 20Km loop (do it twice, or again in reverse?):

Probably a bit of sealed road, but if needs must and all that.
BTW, to do this, I just told Google Maps to go from/to 2 points 200m apart then started adding destinations along the fireroads to the north.
I was in byron for the festival a couple of years ago. A great guy (Gerald) in the local bike shop took me around the top of the collapsed volcano in the night cap range. A majic ride in the rainforest.
The bike shop is in an industrial estate just out of town. I think they recently bought the other bike shop in town by the station aswell. They will be able to point you in the right direction.
There are guided tours aswell - pick up brochure from youth hostel.
Also - Jimmys bus Tour to Nimbin is recommended.
Cheers
Peter
I am going to be up in Byron for the Bluesfest too and taking my bike. Planning (rain permitting as i think its nightmare slippery when wet) to do the Nightcap ride on the Monday or Tuesday after Easter (too busy bluesfestin for the rest)with a local mate. Am sure it will turn into a getting lost adventure but he may drag a few others along if he doesn't remember the way. You're welcome to hook up if you wish
Also i have done some riding up around Federal I think just in the hinterland which had a maze of crossing roads and some pretty nice single track
is only a short drive north across the border and there are some good MTB trails up there. check out www.mtbdirt.com.au for alternatives around sth east qld and nth nsw
thanks for comments guys; nightcap sounds cool. matt, i may be up for the ride on monday; although i may explore Federal on sat too as i am staying with a friend near there. just give me a call over the weekend on 0419 255340. Cheers
