"Cycling infrastructure needs work"
Hi all,
This popped up on my uni site- regarding cycling infrastructure etc...
http://www.usyd.edu.au/news/84.html?newscategory...
And the Medical Journal of Australia editorial they are referring to...
http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/190_07_06040...
And the rather disturbing article that brought it all about...
http://www.mja.com.au/public/issues/190_07_06040...
Lots of great references in there for people to use when advocating for trail infrastucture - the Medical Journal of Australia can't be wrong...
cheers,
Lance.

I know some of you have probably studied this road death stats thing forever, but I found it interesting.
http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/safety/pu...
In 2007 1616 Aussies died in road accidents. Of those, 41 were cyclists, and 201 were PEDESTRIANS!
Stuff walking on the pavement - I'm 5 times less likely to die when I'm on my bike. And it's 38 times safer to be riding next to a car than being in it.
FYI, here's the stats from the UK for 2007 (population 3x Australia's). Total road deaths = 2,946, bike deaths 147, pedestrians 646.
In comparison, British drivers are safer (at least with each other), cyclists are unluckier, and, same as in Australia, you might as well book the hearse if you decide you want to walk anywhere.
There are more walkers than cyclists on the roads though.
