Rotorua NZ trip anyone?

By Supagav - Posted on 07 May 2009

Well I have been thinking that we need to do a NoBMoB trip to NZ for a while now.

Time to see If people are interested in signing up for a great week of riding some of NZ's best single track (over 100km of singletrack 15 mins ride from city centre)

checkout http://www.riderotorua.com/

I have looked into flights to Rotorua and they are around $500 return. I am waiting for a quote from AirNZ about a group booking as well.

I can possibly get a house or two for the week, estimate $150 per head for the week. Plus food and cost of transport estimate $300 including a day of shuttles.
Maybe a $50 on beer etc each.
It would bring the cost of the week to around $1000 roughly each.

The money will buy you week of riding in some of the world's BEST singletrack.

And the best part is it would be with the great NoBMoB bunch.

Possible dates for the trip are 21st to 29th of November or the 12th to the 20th Dec.

Anybody keen?

What possible dates would work? A whole week away ok?

dangersean's picture

I could be keen, depending on my schedule at that time of year.

But I would seriously love to get over there and blast down some of those trails..

Nice idea Gav - u da' man! Bring it on! Laughing out loud

For the Dec dates I'd probably want to stay xmas/NY too and wonder around other parts of the island. I mean, might as well while you're there, eh? Eye-wink

Oh wait - best get a passport that I can get back into the country with Eye-wink

I was thinking of tacking it on to the back of the new year break as well.

If we go pre xmas/new year houses are easier to get and cheaper as well. leaves open the option of heading back to aussie land for Xmas with the family as well.

Interesting but what about bike transport? How much do airlines generally charge extra?

If you fly with Air NZ As we would be they give you an extra 10kg baggage allowance for free!!!!

Got to love that, So you can take up to 30kg worth of gear each before you need to worry about extra charges.

I would not fly back to NZ with anyone else at the moment.

Carlgroover's picture

Crikey the beer must be cheap over there! Or is the $50 a daily estimate?

Very keen to go and ride Rotorua and will see if I can do it, I would prefer the Dec. date as I may fly the family over after our week for another couple of weeks as it would be school holidays and my time off work, so I'm a fair chance Smiling
John.

I'm keen! Been talking about going over to Un-Zed for ages!
Great stuff Gav!!!

Supagav's picture

Last time I was home we could get 24 pack for $25 NZ so 48 beers over 7 nights nearly 7 a night. I know john its not quite your magic dirtworks amount but its getting close...

If we can get 10 takers for this trip then it will go ahead. Waiting to see what price airNZ come back with now.

I was over in Rotorua last year on hols and was lucky enough to get an afternoon to go riding. I chose Whatarewarewa Forest (I'm looking at the map now) which was minutes from Rotorua and there are multiple interconnecting trails covering I would say 40-50k's - much is forest sniggle with hard packed bermed corners - it was fantastic. I didn't get to visit the 2006 UCI World Cup track or the others trails in the area.

You would need a week and like John, later in the year would be better as I would have to take the family to be any chance for this.

P.S. Rotorua has about 4 bike shops and you can hire bikes if that's your go.

My map also mentions websites like;
www.rotorua.mtbclub.org.nz
www.redwoods.co.nz
www.riderotorua.com
www.rotoruanz.com

I had an awesome time in New Zealand a few months ago. Keen to go again Smiling

www.bluestoneroom.co.nz in Auckland had "Attitude Adjustment Hour" with NZ$4 pints - that's about 50cents a pint!

World Champs track is no more, but you can still see the Red Bull wall ride on the 4X track as you drive into town from the north.

Not sure if this would end up being possible for me but I desperatly want to get there! keen to know more....approx dates etc.

Paul's picture

Yes Gav they are the trails - I had an absolute ball. I have a full size map if you want one.

Very Interested but need to run this idea past a higher authority and mull over the possibilities.

Well I have heard back from Air NZ.

They will not come to the party and provide us with cheap flights in Dec due to it been peak season.

So at the moment we are looking at going over on the weekend of 12-13th Dec and spending the week (last night will be 19th Dec) in Rotorua riding drinking and having a merry old time.

So Given AIRNZ are not going to give us a group discount each person is to organise there own flights to Rotorua.
What I will organise
Accomodation from the 12th to the 19th Dec
Transport for the week (including bikes of course, I can get a bus that we should get 10 bikes into)
I will organise a day of shuttles for the group.
We can sort out food etc when we get there.
I will hopefully organise a day with a couple of locals to show us some of their favorite trails.
I would see us spending 3 days in the Whaka forest on our own , one day doing shuttles, a day trip to taupo. possibly include one day of riding on more un-manicured trails (epic day out)
The great thing about Rotorua is you can ride for as long or as short as you want and town coffee/food/beer is only a short ride away.

Due to the lack of a group booking option for the flights this trip will go ahead with what ever number can make it up to 10 people!

I will post a ride meeting later today.

Any questions fire away.

BTW Paul what trails did you ride when you were there? (I have the big map as well)

ar_junkie's picture

Thanks for looking into anyway...
Now I need to convince my better half that a week in NZ with a bunch of MTBers, staying next to possibly the best trails in southern hemisphere, is not going be purely a MTB getaway...
Eye-wink

Rob's picture

Junkie... Pratiwi is in... bring Sandy and they can do girlie things together while we're riding all the time Smiling

Although Pratiwi will be bringing a bike too of course!

Maybe the girls could catch the trout for dinner.

Gavin, if you can't make up your mind between 2 places to stay, choose the one nearest the trout as I'll be doing some fishing while most sleep around 4:30am -7am

Supagav's picture

I will try and get the old mans boat to do a spot of fishing(or send him out fishing)during the week as well.
I better speak to them aye...

Paul's picture

Gav, I remember a few trails like "Be Rude Not 2", "Made if you Dont", "Rollercoaster", etc but basically I entered on the first trail and was having fun in the forest until I meet a local then we rode to the top water point to fill up and took the sniggle back down and after he left I went exploring again.

I didn't worry too much about the trail names because I knew that when I wanted to leave I just had to follow the fire trail down to the start.

If you have a look on Jetstar, there are flights available to Auckland for $108 each way with 20kg luggage allowance, but bookings will need to be made asap given proximity to Christmas. Return flights are the start of school holidays.

Is there any chance of bringing forward date of trip to the first week in December? That would tie in with the 70Km Huka Challenge in Taupo, which is only a 1 hour drive from Rotorua.

Greg P's picture
Supagav's picture

Hi Greg P, I saw that was on.
I decided against it for a few of reasons first is cost to do the race. I am trying to keep the price down as much as possible.
The second reason is that we can ride those track mostly on the day we head down to taupo anyway. The third is the trip is about a group of like minded MTBers getting together to ride some fantastic trails. It is not about racing.

It also has the added bonus of tying in nicely with the xmas break.

Dates are locked in now as a few people have signed up.

I saw Jetstar have cheap flights into Auckland but not for the dates we are traveling...... bugger.

geez, 22 years ago. wow, getting grey.
bet the smell hasn't gone away.
be prepared to spend two days indoors while the nose acclimatizes, good opportunity to do that drinking.
it's less noticable away from the town I spose, but geez it's fierce the first step off the bus
