Chainrings and compatability with Race Face Evolve
I have a Race Face Evolve crankset which needs new middle and big chainrings. This will be the second time in 18months. I'm not altogether keen on the wear rate of the Race Face rings and was wondering if I can put on other brands ie, XT
Anybody done this?
Cheers
Phil

FWIW, think most brands are pretty much identical. I recently had some FSA and Race Face rings sat side by side and they looked like they could have come off the same assembly line. However, Race Face are made in Canada and FSA in Taiwan IIRC.
not all shimano will fit the evolve as I found out the expensive way. They were very close but not close enough
Pikey
.......problem with an OEM shimano ring on my shimano octalink cranks, had to fettle about 1 mm off the ID of the ring with a die-grinder.
Always use like with like. The correct bolt pattern is not enough to determine campatibility. It's all to do with consistent spacing between rings and between the pick-up spikes, ramps and pins as well as fitting the spider correctly.
Remember, the Evolve is a budget crankset and thus has budget performance.
Try Deus or Atlas rings as they are of a higher standard and I've had good experience and a whole lot of luck with Blackspire rings in terms of compatibility, durability and shifting quality. If you choose to no longer use Evolve rings, be sure to replace all three rings and chain.
Word is that Blackspire manufacture rings for RaceFace in Canada.
Pikey has loads of experience in this area. He has those cranks and replaces parts often because he's clumsy and likes to shift under full 'Pikey Power' load...
Agree regarding Blackspire, always used Blackspire pro chainrings for upgrades to any of my raceface cranksets. They go great.
