Hi All

Thought I would post a intro really, I was directed here by a poster on Rotorburn/Farkin as racing isnt really my scence and more looking to get into the socil side of things with a decent group of people.

I arrived from Bristol in November 06 and used to ride all the time at home, but it has taken me some time to get myself sorted and settled out here.

I am going to be purchasing a full sus bike in 2-3 weeks as I am recovering from a back surgery and my hardtail is coming back from the UK in September when I go over there.

So yeh thought I would say hello, keen to meet people and ride the local trials etc. I live over in Roseville as well.

And finally for some conversation around bikes:

I am considering the following:

Trek EX8
Trance or Reign X1 or X2
Roscoe
Stump Jumper Elite

I need to test ride a few of these to get a idea, but cant do that at the moment due to the back surgery. Main type of riding I have been doing is XC/Trail/Singletrack with some small drops and jumps etc.

Hello,

I've been looking at the EX8 and recently checked out the prices in the UK, they come in arounnd 1700GBP, convert that to aussie dollar and I think you'll see it's much better value in the UK. Just a thought seeing as you will be back there in September.

Let me know what you think of it if you try it out.

Good luck with your decison, I'm sure there will be some people with plenty of opinions regarding the Giant's and Specialized.

Hi Logan

Welcome... you will find that a lot of people own a Spec Strumpjumper here but some hate them too Laughing out loud the Giant range is popular too, I have an X1 2008 and you can checkout my thread here http://nobmob.com/node/4445 when I asked lots of questions with lots of replies thanks to the kind & helpful community here Eye-wink

Search for Trance and Strumpjumper too and you'll get lots...

Hi Logan,

I moved hear from Reading about 18 months ago and I have found the MTBing in and around Sydney amazing.

I also wanted a full suser for the more technical trails and I went for the Trek Fuel ex 8, 2008 model. It’s a great bike, light for climbing, good reliable componentry and every time you get on it you want to ride fast.

However, if I was to do it again I would go for a 6” travel bike, especially if I had a hard tail for the XC stuff. As my skills have grown and my desirer to try the bigger and tricky technical trails I have now reached the limit of the Fuel and I’m starting to take the bike beyond what it’s designed for.

I’ve just purchased a Specialized Enduro, but can’t comment on how it rides as it’s been frustratingly too wet to get out on it, but it goes well down the steps in the front Garden…..

I also look at the Trek Remedy 8, which I believe would be a great bike for Sydney’s trails, but the Enduro won it on price.

Which ever way you go and what ever bike you get, you will just love the riding here.

Hope to see you on a ride soon.

Who offered me a 09 X1 for 4.2k which is a steel, they have a sale on so it goes till the end of the month.

Can anyone offer advice on frame size, I reckon a XL is gonna be good for me, I am 6'4 and about 80kgs exactly, so not to heavy by any imagination.

Chris, you highlighted something which is a small concern is that if I am looking to start hitting drops will the Trance be to small, I know a lot of people put a 140mm travel fork on for some bigger stuff which it apparently copes quite well with a longer fork on it.

Looking forward to getting out and riding with some of you guys, as I said its been a while since I have ridden and have been missing riding quite a lot.

Just got backed from Avanti castle Hill bike shop, they are selling the Specialised Stumpjumper FSR Elite for $2990 marked down from $5199(only in Satin Red). Russell was nice to build up a small size for me to try but unfortunately I'm too small. I saw a XL and L on the floor, so if you hurry...

he's on this site all the time and he works there. he'll be more than happy to help.

Logan, I’m a bit shorter than you and weigh a bit more (85kg) and I have found my medium size Trek to be fine with drops to about a meter, but anything over that I’ve found the suspension bottoms out.

As far as putting a 140mm fork in a Trance, I’m not to certain if that would meet the manufactures recommendation and it could invalidate your frame warrantee. If you’re looking at upgrading the fork remember a good reliable 140mm fork is going to cost at least $800, so the 4.2k might not be such a good bargain.

Also I’m not an expert on bike geometry but I do know that it’s not all about long travel and the slacker head angles on the larger travel bikes offer a lot more down hill confidence and stability.

I hope I’m not confusing thing’s by advising on the larger travel bike, but I truly believe it would be a better long term investment, especially if you’re talking about drops etc.

Has your LBS got any Giant Reign’s in? I know a few people that ride reign’s and they seem to go well.

Also if you’re not to fussed about the colour, Chain Reaction Cycles in Cronulla have a sale on and they have 2 Large Specialized Enduro Comp’s 2008 for less than $3.5k.

Chay white's picture

they have amazing sales on and I recently bought an enduro off them for roughly half the full price.

as somebody said before I would go for longer travel becouse you get nearly the same cross country use untill you want to take on the tougher stuff and need longer travel for jumps and rough terrain, and believe me this is so true, unfortunatley i found that out the hard way!!

good luck see you on the trails!!!

I have an Enduro Comp and love it. I also have a Yeti 575 that i got for a steel off a pro, but the Enduro is my bike for most weekend rides. I took the Enduro out for a test ride one day and it handled the techincal stuff so much better than my Stumpy, that i had at the time. I had to buy it.

I love the E150 shock, but it is only on the sworks and pro now i think.

The new Trance X0's come with a 140mm Talas standard so I don't think that is an issue on a Trance X.

Benny-B's picture

What I love about the enduro is the 22mm through axel. The Talas might have 15mm which would be great too, but I would never buy another bike with an axel less than 15mm.

I have test ridden a Enduro before they moved it to the dual crown and loved the way it rode then, was so much fun on the downhills, they do seem to have some killer offers on down there.

Something for me to consider for sure.

The trance X1 has the 15mm axle as well.

Hmmm choices.

Heard the commencal meta range is good but no first hand experience.

That Chris S bloke from Reading tends to fall off his Trek a lot so hopefully his new Enduro will help him stay upright.

Chris S's picture

I've now been on two rides in a row without falling off, and they were both on my Trek!

What I'm worried about now is, now I have some body armour and a double crown fork I'm invincible and that 10ft drops not a problem!!!!!!

Hans's picture

Did someone say Enduro? See you tomorrow night...first ride in 2 months!

You might like to give Cycology Bycicles at Tuggerah a call. The Trance X1 was $3700 when I was there on the weekend. Might be worth a trip - it's not that long a drive from where you are.

Logan's picture

Test rode a Enduro again today...got to be honest I love the feel of the bike.

Large is the right size for me, plenty light enough as well.

Plus the white and orange colour of the Enduro Comp that Chain Reaction have will match my Camelback. I didnt even consider a Enduro as I thought it was going to be to expensive, so yeh think I am going to plump for the Enduro. I rode one on a test ride at Afan before and loved it so this is a fairly easy decision.

Benny-B's picture

That has the triple clamp too. Did you know Specialized offer a 5yr satisfaction guarantee? I am bound to be unsatisfied after 4 and a half and want a replacement.

Can you make our ride at Appin on Sunday morning.

Benny

Logan's picture

Yeh they have the 5 year warrenty or whatever.

Ummm probably not, recovering from back surgery that I had done on Friday, so no activities until a week Friday I think.

After that I am sweet.

Jee10's picture

Hi.
I have a 08 Expert. Very happy with it! NO issues at all. But I must tell...I cycle it in the city on a regular basis and get many looks and many, many people chatting to me about it! I've had a dude run into the middle of the road when I was waiting in a turning lane, he wanted to lift the bike, touch it and wanted to know the price! He was very loud and making a big deal over it...people were laughing in the car behind me. Must be the front forks? People don't always chat when I'm on my roadie.....

Benny-B's picture

I saw you the other day in the city riding down martin place. The polished handle bars stick out and look great.

Can you make Appin on Sunday morning?

Benny

Jee10's picture

Yes...that's me with the polished bars!
Na..i'm riding the CareFlight ride on sunday.

Chris S's picture

Logan, if you go for the Enduro at Chain Reaction I think you've made the right choice. Plus if you were looking at a 4.2k Trance your going to have some money left over to bling it up (not that it needs it) or gain some brown points back off the misses!

I was going to buy one of those Comp’s you look at, didn't have my size, so forked out the extra for the Expert. Still got a great deal, but the misses has left me. Smiling

muvro's picture

You won't be disappointed with the Enduro.

I love mine!

Chris S's picture

What bike did you get?

Logan's picture

Waiting for my new work visa to be approved, once I have that I am sweet.

Probably going for a Enduro!
