(In ref to NPA media release 25 June 2009: REGIONAL PLANNING NEEDED TO KEEP MOUNTAIN BIKING OUT OF NATIONAL PARKS)

Question 1

You are an NPA member quietly enjoying your marmalade sandwich in a car park outside the entrance to a National Park. You are approached by a person who it transpires is a MOUNTAINBIKER who has taken time to have read the NPA media release of 27 June 2008: NATIONAL PARKS: ENVIRONMENT GROUPS SUPPORT VISITOR PUSH and wants to contribute to increasing visitor numbers to the Park by going for a mountain bike ride. You reply:

a) “Aha! Through a long process of consultation and lobbying with NPWS, the Mountain Biking community has been able to build a sustainable, environmentally sympathetic dedicated MTB singletrack within the park, much like at Glenrock SRA. Enjoy, and it was lovely meeting you.”

b) “Unfortunately you aren’t able to enjoy any singletrack because you are only allowed to ride on existing firetrails in a National Park. However some of these are at least bearable so feel free to have a ride.”

Andersons

c) “You ride a mountain bike so you are not allowed in a National Park.”

Question 2

You are shopping for a pair of new corduroy trousers when a bushwalker you recognise comes up to you. She wants to know how to get to the top of a sandstone rock formation in a local National Park. You say:

a) “I’m sorry but there is no access to that fragile rock formation because of the possibility of damage caused by walking boots to the soft sandstone surface. I humbly ask you not to go into the National Park with your attitude.”

b) “That’s easy. Through a long process of consultation and lobbying with NPWS, the bushwalking community has been able to build a sustainable, environmentally sympathetic stairway which has been subtly worked into the surrounding rock to enable people such as yourself to get some exercise and enjoy the view of this beautiful natural environment. Enjoy, and it was lovely meeting you.”

C) “No worries - we were here first. Up you go”

If we keep taking creative approaches to communicate, eventually it might get through that we want to consult, assist, DONATE our time, educate, and support the use of National Parks for the wider community.
