Highland Fling: Entries open at 4pm today (Wed 1 July)...

kiwiboy's picture

Clearly they were not expecting the traffic they must be getting - the site has been inaccessible (to me anyhow) since 4pm.

if at first you don't succeed, try not to look astonished.

i'll be taking 'the rig' down - if you don't want to be tired and falling asleep on the way home, let me know as I can give 20 a lift to the event. cost will be $35 each, pick ups at St Ives and North Sydney (could do another if needed)
Cheers - Will

asked me to register in the top right hand corner and then froze...

LadyToast's picture

In the register page there isn't anywhere to register Eye-wink

I think they are having a bit of a DDOS issue.. once the traffic dies down we will all get tickets.

Patience

christine's picture

ok.. I tried this.. on the register page i said i had forgotten my password - then they asked for my email address to which they are going to let me make a new password - having mastered this I was all excited, but I still haven't had an email from them yet...
will keep you posted if there are any thrilling developments of the fling kind... ;

An update from our hosting company. They have disabled our website so no entries will be possible until they have sorted out the issue. I will post here once they give us the go ahead that the site is back live again.

So, there's no point in anyone *trying* to enter just now. We're obviously doing our best (with our hosting company) to get things back online as soon as possible.

As I said, I'll post here when all good to go. Sorry for the inconvenience; again, thanks for your patience!

Cheers

"Dear All

Our intention was to open entries to the 2009 Highland Fling at 4.00pm today. Unfortunately the massive volume of traffic to the site at that time caused the server to crash and thus our website and online entry system became unavailable.

Our website hosting company is one of Australia's largest but, despite us contacting them a fortnight ago to check that the server would cope with the increased volume on this day and being assured that it would be fine, we find ourselves in this situation. Rest assured we are all working to resolve this situation including working with our web developer to see what short term option we might be able to offer.

In the meantime, please let us reassure you that nobody has entered the 2009 Highland Fling yet, so you have not missed out on an entry!

When entries are open, you will notice that we have a new online entry system. First you will register and you will be sent an email to activate your account. Note that each entrant must have their own unique email address to register – so if you share an email address with another entrant, you will need to visit a free webmail provider to get your own email address! This is necessary to keep the system secure. Once you have logged in, you will be able to enter the event, and can log in at any time afterwards to edit, transfer or cancel your entry.

We know many, many hundreds were poised at 4pm today ready to enter the Fling. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this has caused and will continue working here until the problem is resolved. Please don't email or phone us to ask for an update – there are too many already for us to respond to. Rest assured we’ll email our database immediately when entries are enabled.

Thanks for your patience.

Cheers

Fi

I've just entered the single speed category... I'm going to need to do more training Smiling

We saw the email and carried on regardless! The site was up and running smoothly, so we registered, received immediate confirmation, then went back and bought entries. Another confirmation sent to say entry was paid for - too easy!
I think I even spelt my name right too!
Get amongst it mate, go on the site you'll see!

christine's picture

I also have my confirmation email...Payment receipt from Wild Horizons... Smiling

Just don't accept any offers to hold 'race monies' while they relocate...
Eye-wink

BT's picture

...Is that becasue you already had a user name and password from last year??

jdb's picture

The site was online last night and working, I managed to register and enter. The payment has been processed and I've received the payment receipt. This morning it was back to the wait until 10am page. I imagine the load on the server is the same now as it was at 4pm yesterday, they really should open registration at Midnight to spread the load more.

mrsoldfart's picture

5 to midnight and got the check back after 10 am page.

Not happy Jan

dangersean's picture

as my reciept shows a payment time of 11.52pm...

I consider myself very very lucky!

Just spoke to Huw from WH.

- Only "12 people" have entered so far.
- No ETA on a fix yet.
- You can't enter by phone or email.
- "Two and half thousand" people tried to register at 4pm yesterday.
- He confirmed he's having a bad day.

Steve.

BT's picture

WOW that'll leave 1,000 disappointed people!

arghvee's picture

Maybe Huw should do a le mans style start for entries to the Fling. Few thousand people run 500 meters, then have to type in name and c/card. That would thin out the load on those dinky servers.

pikey's picture

No Mogo ticket, probably now no Fling ticket, lets hold our own race then.
If we miss out why not all just turn up and do the race unauthorised Eye-wink

We can just say we are lost......... all 40 of us Sticking out tongue

Not our fault they can't organise themselves.

As a group order we should get special treatment as well.

Maybe the best way to solve the high intake drama for this race is for the organisers to give preferences for those that have competed before? Then place those names in a ballot????

kiwigirl's picture

we need to sit up to all hours of the morning to see if it opens again. Seems it worked for 12 people. Worth a try I think.

"Dear All

We’d like to give you an update on where we are at with our website and online entries for the 2009 Highland Fling. There is an issue with the hosting company of our website which is way beyond our understanding, and we can offer you no further explanation. We have the hosting company, our web developer and others assisting to try and get to the bottom of the technological gremlins.

We appreciate all of you who didn’t ring or email in the last 24hrs! To those of you who did – we are sorry for the lack of a response, but we hope you understand we are devoting our time to working with our IT professionals to fix this problem and get everything back online.

We are not in a position to give a time for entries opening that we can only guess at right now! Our hands are somewhat tied in so many ways. The website may go back up tonight, but entries will not be open.

For those who have asked by email or phone if they can reserve a place, or pay over the phone – we are not allowing this. In order to be fair to all, while our online entries system is offline, we are not accepting any entries nor will we be putting you on a special list or such like.

Once again, thanks for your patience, and please, PLEASE refrain from emailing or phoning for an update!

More tomorrow …

Cheers

Fi

I'm away from the net all weekend.. What are the odds that it comes on line and I don't get a ticket? I've already booked my accommodation too.

I better set up my eBay search filter now I think Smiling

Entries for the 2009 Highland Fling will open on the morning of Thursday 9 July (i.e. tomorrow!). We are not specifying an exact time for this, so please do not ask!

The procedure for registering and entering Wild Horizons events is as follows:

First please note that you must have your own unique email address to register, therefore no two entrants can use the same email address. If you do not have an email address, please visit a webmail provider, e.g. Hotmail or Gmail to sign up for a free email address
Click on ‘Register’ tab on Wild Horizons website, www.wildhorizons.com.au
If you have already registered and activated your account, login with the username and password you selected.
If you haven’t already registered, click on ‘create an account’ and follow the instructions. You will select a username and a password which you will use to login once this is complete.
On logging in, you will see two new menu items. You will enter your personal details and can then enter an event.
Note that on the ‘select category’ screen, only categories for which you are eligible given your age and sex will show.
Make sure you have your credit card details (Visa or Mastercard only) handy.
Once you have completed your event entry, breathe a sigh of relief and begin training immediately.
You can log in at any time to edit, cancel, or transfer your entry.

If you have a genuine issue with your registration or login process, please let me know. But before you do this, please try using the ‘refresh’ button on your browser, or logging out and back in again, to ensure it is a genuine issue. And remember to use the correct username and password.
