Manly Dam - Green, Amber or Red?

Has anyone been around the dam and seen what the condition of the track is like? Also, how are the works progressing?

Keen for a few laps tomorrow but will avoid unless it's all good news.

Did a lap today and I believe it's ok to ride, minimal standing water and a fair few changes since I rode it 5 weeks ago.

Around the Dam today looks OK - very isolated water patches still around.

With regards to the track works - significant work has been done - not sure whether a mtb is required any more though. The amount of smoothing the trail has received from the works has removed alot of the challenge from the trail - making for even faster laps - not sure this is good for mtbs or walker's - the back allambie section is now FAST - which is the main section that you usually come across the majority of walkers.

Riders beware - caution required in this section !!

My son has commented on this - he often rides the bit from Allambie PS to the playground at the cnr of Churchill Cr.

Do we have any info as to why they felt the need to do this? I didn't think it was eroded much at all, and that there were far more urgent repairs needed for the boggy sections on the descent to the dam wall, and for the removal of the recently-appeared "C" line at the top of 19th Hole.

So mountainbikers wont find Manly interesting or challenging anymore and stop riding there?

Only runoff left is the beginning section before the hill up to Kalaui St.

Definitely been dumbed down since the trail works, the back section at Allambie is so smooth I can see a lot more cases of collisions with walkers in that section and around the lower corner of the fire trail. Just a warning, they've put what looks like a speed hump right after the first right in to left and over the rock section. It's soft compact so a few more weekend and it shouldn't be as severe as it is now.

On a side note, could anyone give me some tips how to tackle the left side line at the 19th hole? Would love to ride that line to bring the excitement level back up after what's happened with the trail.

I rode manly dam yesterday for the first time in a while. im a very average riding and thought it was easy.

Manly Dam has gone soft. The rock garden running parallel to wakehurts park way its now paved.

I rode it this morning and had a ball. Got down to 47mins. I know it's slow... HAHAHHA But since I'm an unfit bastard I'm pretty happy with that. . LOL. Had an incident when I was getting long down the DH section, coming around a corner I was confronted with the Ranger in his 4WD crawling up the track. Would've been funny from his perspective.. See me, with my "OH SHIT" face on HAHAHA. Slowed, gave him a wave and continued on my way.

The stuff I noticed that had changed is

- The stone path that they layed heading up to the Parkway entrance, a section has been filled with dirt now. So looks like they put the stones there as a base and will continue to fill the track with dirt???

- There looks like there has been heaps of grading style cleaning up to the track. Smoothing out stuff etc.

- There is a section after Allambie that is the timber slatted bit. It now has wooden stairs that go down beside the wooden slats. Too bad if you come a gutsa on the timber and land on the corner of the steps...

Also, there's been a heap of smoothing and hump making on the allambie down hill section. They even built up some burms a bit. The techy sort of stuff looks like it's going by the wayside, but it's still fun to ride I reckon. I guess after doing it for years the track could become a bit mundane, having the techy bits would be the thing that keeps it interesting. But I find it more than challenging. I still haven't been around without dismounting at least once.

It's funny though, I parked up the top near the golfclub this time and when I finished, saw two guys coming up through the bush instead of taking Manning st (as the signs tell us to do...), and then saw another guy doing the same thing. It made me think of the sign posting RE wet weather closing. Something tells me, that we're not going to stop anywhere near everyone, no matter what we do...

Also, where is this 19th hole drop off?

I looked for it this morning, but couldn't find it.... Can someone link me to where it is, via pic or description? Prefere pic via google earth or something. I'm real keen to check it out. Cheers

You know...

19th Hole

This was posted just the other week:

19th Hole

There's some (very quality) video of Gazza riding the A line on his Big Hit someplace.

GAZZA's picture

under 'the 19th hole bites back' theres one where i cleared it and another when i fell off! i'd put a link to it but rob, you know what i'm like with bloody computers!

muvro's picture

Where abouts is it though?

Having only riden the dam a handful of times, I'm not 100% familiar with the whole route.

Just struggling to see where that is.

GAZZA's picture

after you've ridden down the downhill from the parkway then through the creek and up the steep climb called heartbreak hill, carry on along the fire trail then you join the singletrack on the right as you start to head back down hill again, over a few log steps and you come to a rock ledge that most people take a right then a left round the side of the drop off. if you were to go straight off the rock ledge then thats the 19th hole.

muvro's picture

Yeah, I saw that vid. You got more balls that I do... LOL

I think I found it on the google earth map. Is it up the top allambie end of the track where the track zigzags a little under the powerlines?

And on the track, it's where you come out onto a small rock and you go to the very right, and make that really really tight left onto the rock that rolls off into the scrub. You drop down a couple of little steps and I think they are the ones in the second pic, but from the angle the pic is taken I'm not sure.

I came across a walker and her dog just there, that's probably why I missed it (if that's where it is.)

Yep, sweet. Thanks Gazza.

I'm in the right spot then. No way, I'm going the hole. hahah Just wanted to see if I can do that roll in on the left. I saw a guy do it on Youtube when I was trying to suss out where it was.

Found some evidence, doesn't look too bad.
