Got that one out of the way ...
What was I thinking ?????
All I can say is that it seemed like a good idea beforehand but by the first waterstop, i was ready to pull out.
Legs felt fine but shoulder was very very sore. I think the push up the first hill really screwed it up. Bizarrely, I could still go downhill ok but really struggled on any bit of tech or rocky uphill, I just couldn't pull up on the bars without sharp pains from the rotator cuff....

Dirtworks 100
Another great event from the Maximum Adventure crew. How great was it to arrive at sparrows fart to warm weather?

Best Race Ever!
My main focus was to ride the first hill as last year i didn't have it in my legs or lungs. This year i did just that... rode all the way to the top at 96% heart rate (180 bpm ). My god that hurts! and for the rest of the ride i felt ridiculously strong (except for a lull in heart rate around the 80km mark).
I started near the front of the 2nd wave and let half of them go ahead as i monitored my HR and warmed up my legs properly. Its funny how many people are in such a hurry to get to the hill and then walk it!

This Old Fart's still whipping Ass
By the time I got to the first climb the legs where nicely warmed up thanks to Gazza and Pete at the head of peleton pushing the pace along the road, the climb was very doable after the grader had smoothed the road out, very different to previous years when it was a goat track.

Granny is not a dirty word
Felt good until the descent into the canoe bridge, took it slow feeling a bit sketchy.

Its getting tougher in the old blokes' category
Knocked almost an hour off last year's time and only moved up from 36th out of 43 to 33rd out of 44. That same time would have made 27th in 2008, 13th in 2007 and would have been one off the podium in 2006! Seems you've got to get much faster just to stand still in Super Masters these days.
Anyway, I felt I had a good race...

First 100km first ride over 35km
What a day. Was sooo nervous. didn't think I could complete the course let alone do as well as I did. Had the flue for the 2 days prior. Camped in the van with the flue and awoke feeling ok. A really enjoyable ride. Good to see the other nobmob guys I had done a few training rides with at terry hills. Those training rides were the longest rides ever prior to this dirtworks.
I am stoked to have finished such an awesome race.
Bring on the next one. I have the bug
[Mod. fixed the year]
