Avanti Help needed please
Hey All
I'm new to this site and the whole scene so im way over my head hear lol. I was wondering if some one could please tell me which is the better bike out of the Avanti Ridge Ryder 2009 model or the 2010 model. At first i assumed the 2010 model would be better till i read some specs. But maybe im just to much of a noob to understand it properly i left 2 links with the specs for each bike could you please leave your opinions as to which one is better and why. Thanks in advance Allan

Well, for a start you seem to have done a copy/paste of this post from another forum and taking the shortened links literally.
it's also better to get the specs direct from manufacturer:
2010: http://www.avantibikes.com/cross-country/ridge-r...
2009: http://www.avantibikes.com/comp-mtb-2009/ridge-r...
At a glance the 2010 bike seems to have a better fork as it has pre-load adjust in addition to lockout (they both have) even though it has less travel (80mm 'v' 100mm). I wouldn't worry about the travel too much on a hardtail, in fact on a budget fork would assume less is better as it would hopefully be stiffer and/or lighter.
The 2009 has a better rear derailleur but the 2010 has 11-32 rather than 11-30 cassette.
The cranks are different and would hazard a guess the 2009 bike has the better set.
Basically there are tiny differences like this all over the bike but bottom line is there's probably not much difference at this price point.
Depends on what kind of deal is available. I was in an LBS on Saturday and this particular one was out of 2009 stock if that helps any. I'd also take a look at what Trek and Giant have in your budget too.
like my 2007 specialized epic comp in a medium for 1600 bucks, good tyres and new drivetrain, carbon seatpost and titanium railed seat. BLOODY BARGAIN!!!!
I reckon you can't beat Giants for bang for your buck
The alias is a good spec bike that will serve you well to enter the world of real mountain biking.

I bought a 2007 Ridge Rider as my first bike which I used offroad for 2 years (including some races) and still use as a commuter but the standard forks were crap (i spent $600 on some new Rock Shock Rebas) and the 8 speed rear cassette I soon replaced for a 9 speed. If I had my time again I would have bought a Giant Alias. Remember it costs more to buy upgrade parts than to spend a bit more and get a better spec bike in the first place.
Hope that helps
Cheers
Matt
