DH Minions on tubeless
My front tyre, a LUST 2.35 Ignitor is due for an upgrade and I run 819 tubeless rims
The ignitor is a good tyre, but given some curry it can let go without warning
So I'm feeling like branching out and giving something new a try
Something that can really rail corners, even if I can't
I have read good things about the maxxis minion but can't find a tubeless version (buying online)
Maxxis Minion DH Front Tyre - Dual Ply- MaxxPro 60a - 2.35
Firstly, is this a good tyre choice for those that have used one
It's not for a downhill bike, but I want something chunky and forgiving that I can run at low pressures
Or is this just too heavy and butch for XC duties
Secondly, would the tyre above seal well with a bit of Stans and a hand pump (+ a bit of swearing)
Any problems with burping or running off the rim
I've never had the slightest problem with UST tyres, and want to keep it that way

Mr Bloot - I can report having run a Minion DH Front (2.35 Maxpro 60a) on a Mavic 819 rim. Very nice. Love the grip. The one I had was 831g - a little lardy but not that bad.
True, they are not 'proper' UST but just drop in some Stans, get your compressor out and away you go. Actually, come to think they were a bit of a pig to seal - a hand pump isn't going to cut it.
Nevegal is also a favourite up the front. As you mention weights, a 2.1 Tubeless one was 784g.
If you're stuck on Maxxis, then go for a High Roller. Roll heaps better than Minions, and corner quite well. But I find they feel a bit floaty as you start to corner I suppose the best way to describe it is.
But if you're after a great all-rounder, Look at the Schwalbe Big Betty in single ply flexible bead. I use these and love em. They are an absolutely awesome tyre! They inspire massive amounts of confidence, and the harder you push them the better they perform. They aren't a light tyre, but are great for doing everything around the Beaches. The dual ply wire bead has a much softer compound and wears real quick, but the grip is the next step up from the single ply.
Here's a link to a write up.

Just do it!
Shove a DHF on, go and rail hard and see what you've been missing out on!
Actually, if you can get a Hutch Octopus, they are also excellent up front and are tubeless ready.
On stans rims ok.
With the mavics, just need to watch for burping at low pressure (that's the tyre )
Single ply is a good bit lighter, and plenty strong enough for trail riding - loved the grip!

An Ardent is going to roll a bit better than a Minion but I have been using both tubless on my DH bike for ages.
Would be a bit of over kill for xc (coming from someone who use to race 24hr race with 2.5" highrollers...) and the soft compound will see the center knobs wearing out reasonably quickly. But that's the compromise. I still rate the crossmark as an xc tyre that corners with the best of them
Rock, I took a set to the French Alps when I was went to Les Arcs and they hook up so well, a bit heavy for climbing but not horrendous. Not had them tubeless, but they only puncture I got was when I had a 6 inch nail go through the sidewall and out the other side....
I am running an Ardent on the front of my trail bike and really like the cornering grip. They roll alright too with a few ramp shaped bit in the middle like the ones on the larsens. They are not UST tyres but I have been running them tubeless and have had no problems.
Andy
I have a half used Minion front tyre, 60a, 2.5 that is UST that you can have if you want.
It came with my new bike and i dont like the harder compound so i've replaced it with a 40a compound one.
Im not going to use the tyre at all so its yours for free
I wonder if a 2.5 would fit my XC bike
Apparently they are thinner than a regular 2.5 so I'll give it a go
I can always buy a smaller width later
I'd like to see how different tyres perform around my local trail
But it's hard (expensive) to experiment with different tyres
Anyway, I live in the Blue Mountains
But hanging around the Northern beaches all this Saturday so I can come and pick it up
I'll PM you
Thanks again
don't get the dual ply. That would just be way overkill and so heavy for an XC bike. The dual ply 2.5's are like 1.2kg each or something from memory!
I run the Ardent 2.25 converted to tubeless on my XC bike and I love it. Plenty of grip.
pants is giving me a 2.5
Assuming i can fit it, I'll just run it around my local for a while to see how different it feels
I will need to get a compressor though
(any suggestions on a good cheapie)
When I buy, I can't decide
So i will most likely go a 2.35 Minion - probably dual ply
I'm buying from CRC so have to make some concessions
besides, it looks a similar weight to the ignitor 2.35
And will throw in a 2.4 Ardent
The Maxxpro 62a
Also looks about the same weight according to the Maxxis site
My local is 6 k's of sweet berms and tight turns
i know it well and I want to try some different tyres to see what difference they make
And I want to lean more towards an all mountain tyre than a XC tyre - if you know what I mean
If I'm a bit slower up the hill, it shouldn't matter too much
It's the speed and cornering grip I'm more concerned with
Not having used too many different brands I like Nevegals. They came standard on my bike(2.35) excelent for red hill Terry Hills ect. , swapped to 2.1 Ignitor xc for dirtworks, they roll heaps faster but they don't like playing in the sand. I'm back on 2,35 nevegal for all round riding and will be using my 2.1 ignitors as "race" tyres. Although I might try a small block 8/ crossmark or similar on the rear next time
.hope this helps
Trev
(@Trev) ... and a 2.0 matches well with a 2.35 Ignitor or Nevegal on the front. The crossmark rolls better and will rail in turns a little better, but you won't get the climbing or braking traction a Larsen can provide, and I'd be wary of running them on the front unless the track was pretty buffed. The quick guys run Crossmarks bothe ends, but their bike skills are a world apart from mine.
2.1 Ignitors have those nice little ramps on the blocks that are missing from the bigger case sizes so they roll a little better than you'd expect, but the bag is noticeably on the small size for a 2.1.
Like Andy, I've found that they don't give much warning when they let go. I'm going to stay with a 2.35 Ignitor on the front for the moment, but will put a Larsen on the back shortly. I'll probably try something else on the front after winter.
Jacojoco uses a Nevegal/Larsen combo and seems very happy with it. I've only ridden his bike in the carpark so I can't say a lot about the combo meself.
I am with you with the Ignitors on the front they sure let go alright as it did on Saturday warm up to the 8hr enduro , I have taken out by one of those trees again that jump out at you on a sweeping corner the front washed out big time resulting me versus tree again. I will wait till this wears out as it is new & I also have a brand new spare if anybody is wanting one to buy ?
They do give good grip up to that point, though, so I haven't been unhappy with the choice. I'm just looking for something better as the design is a few years old now.
Just went for my first ride on the Minions
it was a tad wet and slippery, but you wouldn't know it on these puppys
The dual ply seems a little heavy - (and i forgot to weigh them before I put them on so don't know the difference in weight)
But phew, the confidence in corners is x 3 compared to my old Ignitors
Also got myself a good 2hp compressor from Bunnings for $99
A good strong hose and tyre fitting for another $20
I took someones tip of putting them on a spare rim with tube for a day
Result - not a single swear word putting them on - it was so easy I couldn't believe it
The dog didn't have to hide, Michelle didn't have to go out, and the neighbors didn't have to close the doors and windows
re: the ignitors. At Ourimbah on Sunday it was well short of confidence inspiring as a front.
washout on you Hawkeye? Hope there were no injuries , I have come too the conclusion for me to run around 28psi on the front of mine when i'm riding single tracks now so there is no or limited washouts on my Ignitor
It was mostly half-loses on corners that I was able to ride out, but only because I was riding conservatively. I just had a general sense of the bike feeling a bit skatey and not “hooked up” like normal.
Might be pressures - I used the analog gauge on my track pump to inflate to 30psi instead of checking with the digital unit, and it could easily have been off +/- 3 to 4 PSI. Maybe I need to compensate for the stiffer Crossmax SLR wheels with a lower PSI.
Might also need to ease off the rebound damping a little for that track? It was a lot rougher and not as clean as when I was last there 18 months ago. Not complaining about the track - just trying to work out what to do (if anything can be done) to improve the bike's handling there.
Is a crossmark much chop on the front?
For me anyway the Crossmark has no grip at all on the front. I like to lean into the corners and the side knobs on a Crossmark are way too small.
I wouldn't run anything else but a cross mark on the front for cross country.
Don't know how people can say they don't offer grip. Just lean it over, weight the outside and let it rail.
The only time I've ever washed was at the end of the oaks classic last year. had them pumped up to buggary as the fire road was hard packed but washed out trying to over take on the last grassy corner at Euroka. The grass was wt and I left the main line to try and over take.
I run Crossmarks UST 2.1 front and rear and find they are fine.
I'm just nat a fan. After using a Minion single ply for AM and an Advantage 2.1 for XC they just don't come close. I find the same thing with the Ignitor too.
...are you saying that the Minion for AM and ADvantage for XC are better on the front than the Crossmark and Ignitor?
For me they are.
I ask this in reference to the up coming Enduro at Awaba.
I currently run Crossmarks F + R, and thought they were pretty good. They are crap on sandy rock though, in particular the C line at the 19th. Had no grip what so ever there, and it did take some getting used to, as I generally ride my Norco with Big Betty's on it. I have ridden the Rush (with the crossmarks) at Ourimbah and did find that through some of the switchback style corners the front did wash-out a bit, especially when pushing it a bit more.
Was thinking about moving onto a Racing Ralph, or looking at the ignitors, as some think it's a good combo. I heard the Rocket Ron's puncture a bit, and the Nobby Nic's aren't as grippy or fast as the Racing Ralph's.
So I suppose what I'm asking is, is it worth swapping the crossmark for another tyre for Awaba, or would it suit awaba since there's not a lot of techy stuff there.
Would I need a tyre with a bit more bite on corners? Or better to go for a fast rolling tyre?
Awaba has virtually no rocks but it does have lots of corners. In saying that though the Crossmark will definitely hook up better there than at the Dam.
Can you get up there before the race and try 'em out?
I've never used any of the Schwalbe tyres so I can't comment there...
Nah, I can't get up there for a trial run. I will be going up there the night before, so if the track is open, I might be able to get a pedal in. But I'm not keen on changing anything the night before. Incase something goes south... lol
The CM was pretty good at the dam, so I might just stick with it. Thanks for the help.
I wouldn't change to a tyre you have never used before a race. Keep the bike how you are used to. You will have fun as its a great track.
Definitely good advice there. You wouldn't want to try anything untested the day before or during a race. If you could've got up there this-weekend then maybe...
Also just a disclaimer that my views are my experiences with certain tyres and anyone else may have a completely different one.
Cheers guys.
Do you buy your single ply Minions OS or here
if here, how much do you pay
And you think they're strong enough for rough and clutzy AM duties??
I run them as tubeless
I've got a dual ply 2.35 with a butyl (lead?) insert- love the tyre, but it's a brick
And I rarely flat in the front - and this baby will deflect bullets
A dual ply minion is the DH version isn't it?
Definitly go single ply front and rear for XC.
I run a single ply for FR and I've never had any dramas.
Oops just saw that I said single and I meant dual ply. I have the same as you - 2.35 dual ply (Super Tacky) but once that wore out I got a 2.3 Nokian up front, simply because I got a good deal on eBay and I wanted to try something different. Now that tyre has some GRIP! Lighter than the DP Minion too.
However once that goes I'll be back on the Minion in single ply. OS is the best and cheapest place to look for sure. I've seen therm on CRC before.
They're on CRC but I got dual ply
I got the super tacky as well
I'll just ride em till they wear out I guess
And then go single ply
