Entries are open for the 2011 Back Yamma BigFoot 25/50/100km MTB Enduro if anyone is interested (Hawkeye?)

http://www.backyammabigfoot.com.au/

2011 sees the Back Yamma Bigfoot return for its second year. This 25/50/100km mountain bike race is held in the Back Yamma State Forest near Parkes and Forbes in the Central West of NSW.

The course has been designed to cater to beginners, intermediate and advanced riders. Beginners can get a taste of the action in the “Little Foot” (25km option), while intermediate and advanced riders can push a little harder and take in some of the more technical aspects of the single track in the “Big Foot” (50km option). A 100km “Two Big Feet” option exists for those riders wanting to push even further.

Interesting, I've been thinking about trying my hand at an enduro for a while.

Whats the course like, would trying for the 50km be a bit ambitious for a first attempt. I was looking at the thread about 'cramp' and there seems to be a bit more involved than pulling on the shorts, putting a bit of powerade in a camel pack and heading out for a lap or 2 or Manly

Im reasonable fit, happily did 2 laps of Appin on Sunday.

Back yamma is good fun. Alot of single track out there. Its very flat so there will be some quick guys racing around on the single speeds.

hawkeye's picture

The course is relatively flat, with a few rolling hills. I'm not particularly fit or fast and finished the 50km in 2:35 or so, about middle of the field. The quick guys did the 50 in under 2 hours, and the 100 in under four.

I'll be doing it again this year, just deciding between the 50 or the 100. Thoroughly enjoyed myself last year.

This event makes a great first enduro.

.... it's time for the hundred hawkeye !

I'll see you there

I think I will have a go at the hundred ,it will be my first 100 and it sounds like a cool event to attempt this .

I've never done a proper race before but i believe that i have a good level of fitness. im thinking the 25km would be my race. For anyone that has ridden the track, how would a hardtail bike go?

hawkeye's picture

A hardtail would be fine even for the 50km. You can read about how Red Shirt kicked my butt on a hardtail last year LOL!

I'm still tossing up between the 25 and 50km events. What are some good training techniques or rides that anyone could advise me on? I do maintain a regular fitness run every other day varying between 8 and 10km. I know a run won't build the same endurance as cycling but i have been doing this for the past 1-2 years and have seen the results.
Also i have no idea about what equipment should be taken to a race. Do i need a bell on my bike for safety reasons? What should i take in regards to sustainance and hydration during the race?
I do know its a long way off but i would like to be prepared and start budgeting now.
Thanks for helping a nub haha Sticking out tongue

In the same boat as a few of the guys here....Bigfoot is going to my first Enduro race and I'm keen as mustard (the wife is also considering entering)

Any hints on training, prep and more generally just how to tackle the race would be more than welcomed!

Keen for some training in lead up to race as well....

Guys, you are not alone. This is the first official event I have entered EVER after taking up MTB'kg 3 years ago and I have opted for the 25km even though I feel I could go for the 50km option - I'm reasonably fit (could be fitter though). My partner has just bought her first MTB bike (dually too) and I see this as a great event to introduce both of us to organised racing with a social flavour being the order of the day. Next year I will likely go for the 50km. However, I think the whole point of this event is to not take it too seriously (some will no doubt).

Plus I reckon us 25'ers will have a hoot on the day - we'll start after everyone else, finish after everyone else and we'll be partying well before everyone else. I'm looking forward to meeting other NobMob's and their respective partners/spouses/kids on the day.

I'm hoping to ride the 25km course the day before if it is open and would welcome company if anyone is interested.

Winco.

To cheat and re-use my post from a previous thread, this is my standard spares kit for a 50/100km race:

"I picked up one of the fully loaded tool canisters from Cell for about $25 (including CO2) which lives in my spare bottle holder. It's never been used in anger but there's no fuss or thinking about what to take for a ride as it's packed and on the bike at all times. It covers from XC races to a lap of the dam to a 100km enduro quite nicely

It weighs about 400g and contains:
spare tube
CO2 head and 2 canisters
chain link
tyre lever
$10 note

I throw my multitool in my jersey pocket (as it tends to get used more often) and that's all you need "

Cell no longer sell the bottle toolkits but you can assemble your own using this container and CO2 head:
http://www.cellbikes.com.au/Bike-Rider-Tool-Bott...
http://www.cellbikes.com.au/Bike-Rider-CO2-Gift-...

Have read of this thread about chain links, you'll want one of those just in case
http://nobmob.com/node/21255

The multi-tool I use is one of these from Crank Bros for about $30 landed from the US
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Crank-Brothers-Cycling-Bi...
It's got everything you need and comes in a hard case which is handy for keeping it dry and stops it snagging on your jersey etc

hope that helps

Just signed up for the 50. After a horror run of late - nearly being homeless, having my car pole axed on Easter Saturday things are starting to turn around-this looks like the perfect event to take the family and have a awsome weekend away and have some fun.

Great opportunity to organise car pools....

(We'll the take the whole family....this is a great entry to 'racing' for younger riders and S.O.'s) Smiling

Angelo = 1st place at the Mont 2011 MTB race

Hi Hans,

Just to let you know, there was already a ride meeting for Back Yamma. http://nobmob.com/node/19196

Am looking forward to it and just happy I don't have to race against your kids. It might be embarrasing......Smiling

I might look at doing the 100 since the Angry Doctor isn't being run this year.

BigJosh's picture

Is the event staged or do we all start at the same time for the 25km event?

hawkeye's picture

The 100 left at 8am, 50 and 25 together an hour later.

The start was reasonably orderly, with about a kilometre of fire trail before the first single track to allow the field to stretch out.

Brian's picture

Did you just camp at the track?

hawkeye's picture

Smoke from open fires doesn't do a lot for my lungs.

Trev's picture

Come on John do the 100. With the mont training and your commuting you'll smash it.

BigJosh's picture

Can you camp anywhere near by?

craked's picture

Camping at the track and it's free Smiling and you can have a camp fire.

hawkeye's picture

@Trev: cardio wise, yep you're right. Just gotta get the lower back to play ball. i've got til August 19 to make the call.

Overdoing it at Yellomundee a couple of months back before the back was strong enough was a bit of a setback. Hoping the therapy plan does the job in time.
