I need a weeks mountainbiking holiday with a group - starting Sept - anywhere local: NZ, Bali, Aust etc. Anyone been on one lately or got any good ideas / places to go?.

NZ is good and quite local may be a little cold though....Done some of the South island, pretty much most places you go will have some sort of Mtb trails. Try this site http://www.vorb.org.nz/
I hear that the Mtb in Chang Mai in thailand is awesome and well set up including bike hire transport etc....you could check that out...?
You could try Brisbane for riding....there is plenty of good riding up there. Mt Cootha, Daisy Hill, The Gap trails. There is a book on rides in SE QLD in most bike shops in Brisi if you make it up there.
i've heard that in BC canada there's a bit of riding to be done. not sure how accurate these reports are though....

I spent six months in Rotorua NZ a while back and was just there a year ago as well - holly holly sh/t it is absolutely amazing riding -- you have not lived until you have ridden a trail there called "B rude not to" oh man I still have a bikegasm whenever i think about it. combine that with sitting around in natural hot springs, and drinking some wicked local beers. Its tough to beat.
Of course Whistler probably could beat it (especially around the time that Crankworks is happening) but it is a long way and pretty expensive.
