Got mine already! $10 for a tent for 2 nights seems good.

How long until we see the first entry for sale on this site. I am guessing January.

There was a bit of a glitch this morning, my girlfriend got hers in and then someone jumped on the sand castle with the server in it, was an hour and a half or so before I got min in after.

Will I be doing it on the crosser?
Will I F@&k!
The fling was torture, Dirtworks(convict) 100 would be ten times worse!

Logan's picture

Earlier than normal or is it me?

I have not even sorted out my Capital Punishment or Willo entry yet, let alone this. I will wait to pick one up in the fire sale that will take place on here in the run up to the event!

Logan, its just you Smiling

I am in. I'm going to try and join the sub-4 hour club this year.
This is a close as a 'home' match as it gets, so I'm bang up for it.
Just gotta find 14 mins of savings somewhere....

C'mon Anthony, break that down over 104kms, meaning go 9 seconds per/km quicker and that's 15 minutes and 36 seconds. Sounds easy right Eye-wink

I could start on some appalling spruiking of sponsored products making me faster here - but I wont*.
The dually will help on the rocks, but I didnt lose time there on the hardtail, so it just comes down to lungs, legs, heart and head.

*Specialized products (bikes especially) make you fast, buy them Eye-wink

Jumped in for the 50k - its on a Saturday huh?

DudeistPriest's picture

I've ridden the GNR before but what's the rest of the course like? The reason I ask is I'm currently recovering from shoulder surgery and will have only been back in the saddle for about 5 weeks when this rolls around; I've already had to pull out of the Capital Punishment. So I'm thinking with plenty of training on the trainer I should be able to handle the 50km course, what do you think.

PS: I'm going fu@&*ng mad sitting at home

Brian's picture

@Geoff63, unfortunately (or fortunately for you) the 50 doesn't have GNR in its course. The 50 is not technical at all so it just comes down to fitness.

DudeistPriest's picture

Mmmm well maybe a bit of plain sailing might be the way to go for my first hit out, thanks for the feedback.

Date on site says 5th May 2012.. thats a Saturday.. Or am I loosing it here??

Brian's picture

They have moved it to a Saturday. On there site they say they are putting on live music Saturday night for a party. I thinks its good so theres not that mad rush to get home for work on Monday.

From their site

http://www.maxadventure.com.au/convict100/index....

The Convict 100, one of Australia's premier 100km marathon events will return on the 5th May 2012 for another "century of dirt". For the first time in the event history, the Convict 100 will be staged on a Saturday giving all riders and supporters an opportunity to "properly" enjoy the St. Albans hospitality after the race.

Hot showers and live music will be available on Saturday night and if you don't have any accommodation, just book a two man tent in the Real Insurance race village for $10. Entries for the Convict 100 open on the 1st December @ 9am and with numbers capped at 750 in the 100km event, you will have to be fast.

no mad rush to get home? just the mad rush to get there on Saturday morning...

Personally I don't like the Saturday time change, although I understand the reasons, still will be interested to see if they get the "after race party" that they seem to think they will get?

string's picture

You have better proof reading skills than I, totally missed that bit.. I cant see myself hanging around too long after though. After a huge race its back to the couch, let the kids hop on pop

Have look at the course profile. While the 50 is not technical - it is all tar road, dirt road and fire trail - there are a couple of downhills, especially the main descent towards the end - which can be a bit bumpy and will test out a not-quite-healed shoulder. There's also the main climb, which requires a shoulder that is up to pushing a bike for a few hundred metres.... Smiling

DudeistPriest's picture

Thanks for the feedback.

Antsonline's picture

The main hill at the beginning is certainly tough. There are a couple of things that make it tougher than it should be though....

1. The people who belt along the bitumen and then get off their bikes to go up the climb, causing everyone behind to have to get off too.
2. The fact that it is very difficult to get to it in advance of the event to pre-ride it and get your mind around the steep bits. THe access at the bottom is via private land, so thats a 'no no'. The only way to take a look is to ride the course in reverse, descend the hill, and then ride back up it. Only the very very interested need apply!

However, its completely rideable, for non-elite and elite, but it takes a bit of patience, as it is long and there are bits where you will be in your granny gear. There are some steep pinches through the course of the hill, but there are also sections of respite where you can take a big breath.
If you can get to the bottom with a clear(ish) track and then get ready to shout "rider" a those that are walking to get them out of your way, it can be done. Get some climbing training in, and have a crack. Riding vs walking is probably worth 10mins + of time.

Brian's picture

I rode the hill this year except I did dab once because someone stopped in front of me. That was also with the wet conditions and crossmarks front and rear Eye-wink

Lach's picture

.. up at the pointy end of the field. By the time I get there, 90+% are walking. Grinding away in granny for me gets me up to about 5kmph and I can walk most of that climb at about 4kmph, so I figure I lose < 10 minutes and I save some legs for later. No need to stop at the top either - it's like a feed station up there usually, with the over-dressed, over-hydrated or just plain stuffed all taking a break.....

Antsonline's picture

I dont want this to sound patronising - as its really not meant to be - but I really think that one day I should enter a race like 'Convict' and just ride it towards the back. Its a completely different experience.
Its like a different sport, and I reckon I am missing out on so much. Sure - the front (ish) is good fun, and you get on TV or in a mag every now and again, and yes - we are all friends, and do chat whilst racing. The vibe with people taking it less seriously does sound good.

Enjoying the ride, sharing stories, planning stops, over-dressing - all of it just sounds like a great laugh and so sociable.
If there is one of the 'big' marathons this year that isnt part of the XCM series, I am going to ride in no lycra, and just enjoy it with others.
Thats my early new-years resolution.

Again - I really dont want to cause any offence by this. I'm quite jealous and intrigued by the difference and the range of our sport...

Brian's picture

That's easy, just set up a SS with gearing that limits you to about 13km/h on the flat.

Lach's picture

If you bring a tow rope you can patronise me all you like Smiling

Conversation can be a bit limited, though. In my case there's usually only enough time for a couple of words between each gasping breath......

teeps's picture

Got my rego in!!!! First 100km. Very excited.
