Convict 100 2012
St Albans, NSW
Round 3 of 2012 XCM Series
The Convict 100 is regarded as one of Australia's most challenging mountain bike endurance races, consistently inspiring all entrants to push their personal boundaries.
Now in its eighth year, the course follows the historic Convict Trail through the Dharug and Yengo National Parks. The mix of fast fire trail, technical single track, rocky descents, and spectacular ridgeline views is unmatched by any other MTB event. The Convict 100 starts and finishes in the historic township of St. Albans and competitors can choose between the full "Century of Dirt" and the 50km course

Anyone know why the event name change? Are DW no longer sponsoring the event? There's been no mention of it (unless I missed the email?)
I guess so because there no mention of the word "Dirtworks" anywhere.
Yep - dirt works are no longer sponsoring the event. I remember reading it somewhere on cycle nation
.
100 now sold out
If the Convict is race no. 3 in this series for 2012, what's the other one besides the Capital Punishment in the early part of the year?
Can't see anything on the Real Insurance race list and the filters on their web site don't seem to work to help in narrowing it down. The Husky is also advertising itself as no. 3 for 2012?
Wombat 100 is round 2

I thought it was State-based??
They're are allowing one in Vic. It's meant to have a lot of single track so I'm looking forward to it
I take the delay in announcing the series would be if the Angry Doctor is being run or not.

...so many choices. Might have to re-think my strategy for improving my XC Half Marathon standings...
Too slow off the mark for this! got a couple of mates going - after spending last weekend on the sidelines due to a knee injury, discovered I'm a bad spectator!
Will be selling their tickets nearer the time, just keep an eye out on here and elsewhere.
Was too slow so now I am only doing the 50km!
Should be a good day.
This'll be my first 100km'er. Looking forward to it... except that boat looking bridge thing, most likely I will be unexpectedly filling my hydro up there.
I love this one and can't wait for it.
This will be my first 100km race - looking forward to it!
Just wondering whether most people are planning to spend the Fri and/or Sat nights up at St Albans? If so, is camping a decent option?
Cheers
Simon
I've been trolling the home page and can't find where the start time is, could someone tell me? Really something I should know but don't!
100k start time is 7am.
Ill be there from Friday to Sunday and look forward to a few beers post ride! (First 100k ride - will be slow as i am just coming back from a broken arm 9 weeks ago) There is a few camping options out there including the tent village which sounds pretty good.
I live in Hornsby so it's not too far to get to. Though I know the ferry gets pretty crowded beforehand, so does anyone have any recommendations on how to ensure I don't get stuck in the ferry queue too long?
@Tristan, I'd wait for the schedule to come out as you need to register as well. Unless your going to drive up Saturday Friday afternoon as well then registrations the race morning is normally really early which means you need to aim to get there around 5:30am to park, register, attach your number etc.
Is do able but its an early start.
3am start from Manly. Never again thanks.
Moral of the story is: Make sure you've got plenty of petrol and take lights with you, because wiping your ar$e in the dark isn't exactly fun. Read why
PS I paid the extra $10 to have a tent all set up for me when I arrive
Hey Phil, so what time are you aim for this year?
I'm woefully under prepared. I'm only doing it for the wrist band
Maybe stick with tradition and do 5 minutes either side of 6.5hrs
This year
Rode the course this weekend. Ouch i am so unprepared! Took 6 hours to do 70k!
Ill be helping direct traffic Friday night, if you see a RFS member on a carbon Yeti say gidday!
Have the organisers sent any emails out re this event? Just realised I've seen nothing and was thinking either they have sent nothing or I'm not in their database as an entrant.
Nothing yet. They are running the Wombat race this weekend so they will probably switch to Convict mode next week.
Thanks @ps. Might come out & watch Wombat on Sunday as Mrs Fatboy & I will be in Melbourne. Just decided today to go to the game at the MCG Saturday so we'll stay the weekend. Maybe drinks bitches for Nobmobbers?
They've sent out lists and rider numbers now FINALLY!
Out of interest, what does the "Cyclocross" category mean?
It's a category for nutters like GAZZA
(Can't imagine why anyone would choose to ride GNR and Shepherds on a CX bike) Give me a comfy full-susser anyday
So not a 29er hardtail then?
Not on the GNR. I prefer to 'surf' the rock gardens on the 575. The Yeti always picks the right line
Gary, I'll be joining you on a 29er HT for this one.
There weren't any to be made, it was the 29er all the way, Phil's planting a seed of doubt but I'll stick with the 29er for this one. I can crash over the top of any rock garden
There wouldn't even be 30km of rough stuff. the rest is road or fire road so for the most part the 29er should be fine.
Can your backside?
Riding the oaks yesterday my backside was feeling it for the first 25km then it was fine....I think it was numb by then
You'll be fine then, your butt will be numb by the time the rough stuff starts
Hi all, my first comment and my first "event" (it's not a race, is it ?), just wanted to say i appreciate all the talk/advice on Convict 100, on this and other blogs. Unfortunately the 100 was sold out when I entered, had to settle for the 50, damn. Haven't been doing much trail work of late, to wet, I have been on the road though, better than none at all I guess. Good luck all.
Was sick of getting overtaken by 29ers last year. Now I much prefer the HT 29er to my 5" dually. It is more All mountain /trail, than XC /race, still has the shortest ribbed chain stays of any 29er I have seen, accelerates and climbs technically better than my 26" dually. I live on the edge of LCNP, ride Terrey Hills etc so I am use to riding rocky rough trails and still prefer the 29er HT, Andos / Oaks back to back no probs and I'm no spring chicken over 40. Convict trail hopefully it will eat it. Tubeless wide tyres and low air pressure helps as well.
And Enjoy the race Floydo, I'll be there on my new 29er hard tail too! I did Capital Punishment (50km) on it on Saturday and it was great. Will be doing a training ride in LCNP tomorrow from 4:30 pm... Might see you down there?
G'Day All.
Quite a few comments already about doing the ride on 29er hardtails. But for the old schoolers, who haven't ridden this before ... which will be better for this ride; 26" HT or -dually?
(No 29ers in my kit bag. Missus says she perfectly happy with the equipment I already have .... Ahhmmm ... Lets get back on topic then shall we ...)
Did the 100k Capital Punishment on the HT this past weekend, with no issues. (Other than being tortuously slow on the single trail. Thanks for the patience to all who were lining up behind me!) Wondering if the dually is overkill?
If you are out to have a serious crack at a good time then I'd definitely go a hard tail on this course. If, like most of us, you are out to go and have a great day out with minimal pain and maximum enjoyment then go a dually.
...or get yourself a spesh epic 29er and get the best of both worlds !
...... and all the other Nobmobbers. JP once you go 29er HT you never go back. Heard a bit of rain is predicted this week, could see similar conditions to last year. A bit damp on the track. Hopefully no helicopters or ambulances this year. Might see you down there JP tomorrow, I"ll be the one pushing my bike up the Pennant Hills climb practising for the first hill at Dirt Works. haha.
After The Fling last year on the crosser I made a decision. The crosser is just for crossing and not marathons!
Although I hear there's more doing the convict this year than last years Fling?
One word,
SUCKERS!!!
or two,
NUTTERS!!!
Good luck to everyone anyway!
Enjoy
Hey Gaz, thats right i remember you mentioning how back breaking it was. Have your teeth stopped chattering yet? Given a choice I'd rather Fling on a Crosser than do Dirtworks. So the CX category truly is for some serious masochists
I don't think half of them have thought it out properly. Aside from the "small" techy section in the middle, what about the Hills? Some seriously low gearing will have to be set up if they want to ride most of the course. You may have the strength to push a larger gear but they won't have the traction once they get out of the saddle.
I'm looking forward to hearing from some of the CX entrants after the race.
