Thredbo?

Thinking of a visit to Thredbo this summer. I know they have a downhill course but I'm more of a XC rider. Are there any XC tracks as well in the area? (I like riding uphill as well as down)

Is the downhill track OK for a normal 5inch duallie bike or do I need to rent proper a proper DH rig to do it?

Is is a good example of Thredbo downhill. For a good rider you will get down here on a 5 inch bike.

Regarding Thredbo XC, here is a shortish loop around Thredbo, nothing to really write home about. You can do the firetrails, and climb up the hill, good scenery.

We were there earlier in he year, and I would recommend heading out to cascade hut (out and back) for a bit of a bit of an adventure.

Singletrack wise, there is a reasonable loop around lake crackenback resort (free entry), and for some more technical single track, head to the trails around lake jindy - I didnt ride hese but locals will tellyou that this is the better xc riding in he area.

Hope this helps.

Im heading down that way too after xmas. Staying near Jindy so the Jindy trails should be good. Ive heard the Cascade Hut out and back is also good, so might add that to the list. Cheers.

I have just got back from racing the National downhill round at thredbo.

Sure a 5inch would make it down but trust me when I say its a waste of time!
Your fingers, hands and forearms will have terriable arm pump and pain.
I see downhill beginners ride the track all the time and there hands are stuffed after a few runs!!

Your best bet is to hire a downhill bike with 8inchs on suspension! SEMTB have quite a few different brands and setups to choose from.

The course is 4.2k long and very rough and rocky in places and alot of fun.

I will be there around the 11-14 of Jan if anyone wants to do a few runs.

Outside of DH, some good XC riding starts at the Tyrollean village in Jindy
it heads out to the dam and back
But off this main trail there are many side trails, all of different tech abilities

Went to the Crackafat resort trails last year and the trail was as boring as batshit
Well, the scenery was quite nice, but couldn't really get into the trail
It may have improved but we didn't bother this year

If you want some proper XC riding, do The Pinch Ride Smiling

I think there might be a requirement to do the DH familiarisation training before they let you ride the chairlift on your own. Be prepared for cost and time. Others may have the exact details - or see SE MTB Co web site http://www.mountainbiking.com.au/

For the good advise. The DH vid looked OK for an XC bike but that wide angle lens of the go pro is very deceptive. Renting a DH rig seems to be the way to go and save my XC steed for trail rides.

thanks!

Staffe, the DH track is very very rocky and has alot of concreat in it. I wouldnt even think about taking my XC bike on it.

You wouldnt believe the number of rims I and friends have broken at Thredbo. It can be a very expensive place to ride (parts wise)

You have to do the Cannonball initiation class. They need to assess your skills before letting you on the hill. Last year they had a small skills course over on Friday flats where they could see how well you rode steps and rocks. Once thats done they will show you how to use the chair lift and then do a slow run with you stopping a number of times to show you sections.
