Forestville Park PoM

Hey guys,

An FYI that Warringah council has released a Draft Plan of Management for Forestville Park. This is an area of bushland and playing fields at the end of Currie Road, Forestville. It's a critical link for the Bantry Bay trails if they go ahead.

There's one or two comments in the PoM that could be considered negative towards riders. The good news though is that the PoM references the Mountain Biking in Warringah: Research and Directions paper although oddly on the Public Comment site calls out the retention of existing trails, being fire trail and the informal trail, which I assume is the single trail in the south east corner of the play fields.

There is an information day end of Currie Road, Forestville, 10am – 1pm, on Saturday, 12 May 2012.

Residents have had a flyer in the mail advising them of the Draft PoM and the information day. Would be good to have MTB coverage the entire time as I am certain our friend Rosemary will be down there further spreading her message.

The PoM is mostly about general recreation and conservation in the park although there are some specific items re Mountain Bike trails.

Easy link, Thanks Dan

Just completed the Warringah Council on-line survey on the Forestville Park trail proposal, only took 5 mins.

Quickly read plan of management, and completed survey from an environmental mountain bikers point of view stating the need for IMBA trails and links.

Took 5 mins

I've just been down to the Forestville Park PoM information day.

Overall it was pretty good. I chatted with the council staff and asked about the response to the plan. The only concern that is being raised is about the MTB trails. I had a good chat with some local residents who are concerned about the trails and how it will impact them; i.e. being buzzed by bikes on single trails. I asked them to keep the dialogue open with council and bike riders so that we can all understand each other and put appropriate plans in place for all park users.

Of concern though was that the PoM specifically excludes the construction of any further trails. This is in contrast the the planned Bantry Bay Loop which does call for additional single trail. I discussed this with the council who mentioned that if required there would have to be an amendment to the PoM.

Surly this will delay the trail further? A question for the guys already working with council.... is this a concern? Should we be making submissions to council to fully support the future strategy? As a resident who backs onto FOrestville Park I'm very keen to drive the best outcome for the entire community and also to ensue that Mountain Bikes gain the access that is needed.

What do you think?

Dan was that you down there this morning.
If so I have to say you were doing a sterling job with the old dear and her hubby...very patient and measured.
Good show.

Good on you for getting down there. Unfortunately my flu ruled me out today - missus needed the car for work and walking/riding over wasn't an option Sad

Yes, it is a concern and I've already made comment to Council to that effect. An amendment to the POM will make it very hard. It needs to be available as an option within the current PoM.

I've mentioned it in the context of it being both a connectivity issue and a sustainability issue - there are erosion issues that need to be addressed with trail re-routings in some locations (always a safe bet, that one, given their age), and connection with proposed NPWS trails is not addressed.

Neither is volunteer trail maintenance mentioned. Sustainable trails don't remain sustainable without love and attention, and given Council's track record at Manly Dam it ain't gonna work if we have to leave it all to them.

That'll be those years of corporate change management kicking in. I wasn't always patient and measured but learnt early on that it does't get you anywhere to take the "I'm right, you're wrong, suck it up" approach. There's something to learn from every conversation.
