Wollombi Wild Ride 2012
The Wollombi Tavern
Round 5 of 2012 XCM Series
Date
To be held Saturday 1 September 2012. (The day before Father's Day.)
The race compound and registration area will be in the grounds of the Wollombi Tavern. From there riders will marshal for their starts and head out the back gate and onto the Yango Creek Rd. All courses start and end here, with the finish being a right hand turn into the grounds of the Tavern to the finish arch. The Wild 15 course is out and back and the Wild 45 & 75 are both looped courses with a small amount of doubling up on the way back. There will besome great off road additions to the course via use of private property, subject to weather conditions, along last years course. Please note there are no road closures on the main tracks and normal road rules apply when using the roadways. We do not expect much traffic and a traffic management plan will be in place. Please be aware the course has some very steep climbs and decents. The surface is mostly fire trails and gravel roads which have various degrees of condition, from 'rough and guts' to quite smooth.
Note that the land along Moore Rd is private property. Please respect this.
Race Distances
Wild 75 is a 75km ride (must be 18yo +)
Wild 45 is a 45km ride (must be 14yo+)
Wild 15 …..you guessed it, is a 15km ride (must be 10yo +) - designed for non-serious riders, novices and family groups.

110 bucks to ride 75K's of gravel roads? or have they added some MTB trails to the route??
for all the CO2 to be exhaled, rubber worn off tyres & to cover the multitude of Carbon Fibre that will be there!!!!
I'm guessing the 45km counts towards the half marathon series, and the 75km counts towards the full marathon series, right?
I hope so
Anyone know the course profiles? How much climbing?
Check out their site. They have the profile. It looks like two big climbs and one descent
http://www.wollombiwildride.net/default.asp?Page...
Interestingly there is about an 16km out and back (8km out, 8km back). I wonder how they control that one? 8km of bunting?
Could be chaotic...
Not much climbing really, only 771m.
Expensive for the distance and the course isnt that crash hot. Its not like I can get a good ranking anyway with my rubbish result at the Husky.
I'll be giving it a miss this year too. Price hike doesn't represent good value for me considering I can ride 80-90% of the course whenever I want and the part that goes through private property isn't exactly mindblowing.
@jaseh. Do you have a garmin profile of the ride that skips the private property. I wouldn't mind having a spin out there before the race.
I don't have one without the PP. Not that hard to skip it but when you look at in on a map.
Head out Yengo Creek Rd from the pub,
Left onto Yengo trail,
Then right onto Finchleys and back to the pub via Yengo Creek Rd.
Basically skip out the section on the northwest side of Yengo Creek Rd that takes you up to the Finchley Track.
I just created this course. I think this will avoid the private property. Does it look right to you
http://connect.garmin.com/course/1617293
That will do it. There is an Aboriginal site just before you get to the finchley track that is wroth a stop. Some carvings in the stone and you can see where a bulldozer has gone through it. And, on Finchleys there is a lookout where you can see Mt Yengo and Mt Corricudgy and on a clear day you can see right up the valley. Let me know when you want to go, I'll join you if that is OK and it fits with my roster.
Sounds good.
So I assume the first climb is on PP.
So to make it similiar to the race we should do the second climb twice
I'll be happy to wait at the top and watch you do it again
Neither climb is very hard except for a section of about 100m on the first one that is steep, loose and rocky. I didn't see anyone ride up it last year.
If you want to simulate the race, ride up finchleys to where it comes out of the PP and turn around and come back down. Now that is a steep little climb.
for a training ride on this one boys?
Let me know when you're thinking of going up?
I'm still not 100% if I'm racing this one due to work but regardless of that I'm thinking a reccy ride mid to late August. I'll let you know when I have something more definite.
Are there any dates that don't suit?
Cheers
Brian
Saturdays can be a bit hard with kids swimming lessons but are OK if I haven't used up any points in the weeks leading up. Other than that, any weekend will suit.
I was out there doing a recce ride today and this is going to be a fast race. I'm calling it now and think someone will crack the 30km/h average.
The out and back will be interesting because its just fire road and having on coming racers is going to be a bit sketchy. I also assume they'll have a timing mat at the furthest point
Yes, certainly..
I remember my tongue lolling out of my mouth at the Fling this year - we hit the first water stop (the Wingello cricket oval) in 53mins.
Its 27km. I cant be arsed with the maths, but its over 30kph.
That involved two full dismounts, and a fair bit of climbing.
Expect Wollombi to be fast. Plan your water stops accordingly...(i.e. dont miss your 'bunch' but stopping too long - it could really cost you)
I'll have my 2ltr camelbak which should get me to the end without stops. I don't know what I'll be averaging but I think this will be the first race I crack the 20km/h average.
We averaged 22kph (moving time) on the weekend Brian. I think you will crack 25kph easy. I would forget water stops, I did it last year with a camelback and a bidon with no problems. Waterstops were at the top of the boree track climb and just before the start of the descent.
I would be stoked with 25km/h.
Everyone ready for a fast race? Weather looks good, should be a fun day.
good luck and have fun on the gravel road high speed decent. ahem... gravel road ride?
Me..? I may tackle something vastly more technical like perimeter and long.. for free!
I haven't done anything this week except eat out as I've been away for work. I think I've added a couple of kilos in the last few days. I'll go over the bike tomorrow night and am heading up Friday afternoon. Should be good and crazy fast.
.. but looking forward to winding up for the last 20 kms..... Hope the creeks are down from last time I was up that way. The causeways on Yango Ck Rd were deep enough to cover the wheels of the Niner. We sent the 4WD support vehicles through to Wollombi via the main road. Pretty area though, and finishing at a pub is a great idea.
Just remember that the gravel road decent is nuts.. you do it twice too
Strava segment ???
Yeah I got to 70.4km/h on the recce ride 2 weeks ago.
Awesome speed there! Is it long and straight or are you a DH by nature. If roads are relatively clear, I'll give top speed a shot. Otherwise, I'll be happy to finish alive.
In the race I'll ease off if there are many riders around me. When I hit 70km/h I was chasing Jase as he was flying.
The down hill is pretty steep. The was a wash out across the road but at that speed it doesn't take much effort to bunny hop over.
I have no idea about this race. Obviously, I get the course, and the profile, but I just cant work out in my mind how the race will play out at the front end.
Shaun Lewis from Rockstar already has three wins under his belt, so he has ZERO incentive to win. In fact, the onyl result I can see Rockstar wanting is for Dylan Cooper to win.
If he wins it, that stops Andy Blair from winning (which must be Rockstars main aim) - it means Shaun cant be beaten for the seires.
Should Blairy win, it all comes down to the Fling....
Lots of allegiances will be formed during this race - little 'teams' working together to isolate others. Very interesting. Myself, Trent Day, James Downing, Adrian Jackson, Andy Hall - we need to watch it unfold, and take a call on the best moves to go with.
I dont know how the race will be broken (i.e. where the selection will come) - big hill, then just a time trial / bunch ride. I foresee 10 guys coming into the final 5km together, and the fireworks starting.
Hopefully I'll be amongst them!
See you in Cessnock!
Yep, see you up there. I wish they would post a start list?
My back has started causing me grief over the last few days so hopefully its all good tomorrow.
from the look of the start times there are likely to be 45 km and even 15 km riders pounding along Yango Ck Rd to the finish at the same time as the elite leaders train is trying to sort itself out?? Might need a bell???
I'm all registered, got my shirt. See you all in the morning
Results available online. I was 7th not 8th in category

Well done everyone.
I wrote a few words on how it was towards the front....

Just as a seperate note - how beautiful was the drive between Wollombi and Calga on the road? Incredible.
The results are up on cyclenation to claim
