Discovered in a magazine few month the 'boutique' brand Canyon > http://www.canyon.com/_en/
They seems to be pretty good bikes, well made, and even the cheapest model has decent gears.

Does anyone own one? or tested one?

Is there any shops in and around Sydney selling this brand?
Would be nice to test one before buying.

German company that sells directly to its customers. No dealers. Bikes have had very good reviews in Europe.
Unfortunately they want sell bikes directly to Australia. Would have to be purchased and shipped to a European address and then shipped to Oz. Import duty will be charged if >$1000.

I'd have concerns around warranty. Frame, components, etc. I'm sure they would look after you but it would likely entail having to liaise with Canyon in Germany and sending the broken or faulty frame or component/s back by airfreight to Europe for replacement or repairs. There would be substantial cost and time penalties involved.

It looks all fine and dandy especially on the value-for-money front when everything is new and shiny but what happens when things break and it's not your fault but a fault of the product manufacturer? Suddenly maybe you are wishing you paid a little more and bought locally from a LBS!

They do look very nice bikes and the value for the kit you get is very tempting isn't it?

No import duty on complete bikes if you fill out the paperwork correctly, You will, however, have to pay 10% GST on the full imported cost plus a customs handling charge.

Haaa they don't ship to Australia/NZ, that s*cks a bit. I've sent them an email to ask why – and here is the answer I've received:

Thank you for your interest in Canyon Bicycles. As of 2010, Canyon has suspended sales to New Zealand and Australia. With Canyon's direct sales model, we don't just deliver your bike; we develop [ bla bla bla bla ] price. We also strive to provide excellent customer service and after sales support in each market.
At this time, Canyon Bicycles cannot offer the kind of great customer service and after sales support in New Zealand and Australia as we do in Europe, so we are maintaining our current sales hiatus to New Zealand and Australia until these issues are resolved. As soon as we are able to ship our products again to New Zealand and Australia we will make an announcement on our website and in our newsletter.

But they do ship to Chile or South Africa… is it that more complicated to offer customer service over here than those countries or even Uzbekistan? Must be something else… or a legal thing?

Yeah, seems good value for the kit that's setup on the bike.
But don't my words as experts one, hawkeye you seems to know quite much Smiling

.. "haven't found a suitable distributor and sales network yet." That could be a customer service issue, or it could be a margin / mark up issue.

given that they don't use distributors it probably means they haven't worked out how to give great customer service as their current ship back to base model doesn't work here
