Awesome! Have to get there next weekend

thats how I feel I am riding.. Eye-wink

BT's picture

I'm going to echo some of the views when this was posted on Rotorburn and agree that dogs have no place on a heavily used mountain bike track. Especially when unleashed!

Lach's picture

... when the track is being heavily used, but it clearly wasn't at the time the vid was filmed. I could see one other rider off in the distance, but wasn't looking too hard.

Would have been a fair bit of room while I was there today as well. At the pace they were travelling, neither the rider or the dogs would hold me up Smiling

Probably more issues involved with doubling back to retrieve the camera after some of the sequences.

Winco's picture

I'm pretty sure the other rider was me and I came across one of the dogs on the right-hand corner of Turkey Royale. Luckily, I saw it coming towards me in time and was able to slow down but I too felt at the time having unleashed dogs on a MTB trail was inappropriate even if the rider in Green apologised at the time. I was friendly to him but wasn't really impressed especially knowing there are some jolly fast riders out there (me not included) who could come across this rider doubling back for repeat shots, etc. with unintended consequences.

I'm also coming across people walking the trail there too totally unaware it's for mountain bikes! Keep alert folks.

Twitchtrail's picture

Yep Winco was there and was slowed by the dog(s). Saw that. I was the other rider in the background on the vid - was on the new green trail doing laps and saw enough to disturb me. Firstly there was a young boy and his Dad joining Turkey Royale at the pump section beside the fire trail at exactly the same time the filming was being done and I watched Oli ride backwards up the trail from the lower big berm, when he had no idea if these two other riders were in the vicinity (which they were). The dogs were clearly having a great time but out of control. Glad there were only the 4 of us down there apart from Oli and vid operator and dogs.
If you're going to ride backwards up a blind and hidden section, the least you can do is post a lookout at the top. Who knows who's joined the trail in the last 10 minutes?? The traffic on this popular trail is now constant although varying in number of riders; no-one can assume anything.

Awesome bike skills

mike95's picture

Great vid, but i also don't agree with the unleashed dogs on such a heavy traffic trail such as OMV.

I was riding OMV on friday arvo, & had a very near miss with these 2 dogs as they bolted the wrong way up the south side loop. I narrowly avoided them but it was very close & to be honest I wasn't all that impressed. Lucky i was able to veer off the trail into the scrub as the dogs bolted straight past me.

I had a word to the owner & he laughed & thought it was a joke. I pointed out the sign which says no unleashed dogs. He continued to ride with the dogs. The trail was moderately busy.

Im glad i didn't encounter these dogs on one of the wooden bridge sections, it would of ended badly.
As we know, there is very little runoff in many areas @ OMV.

evan's picture

Drop a line on the SNORC Facebook page and let them know your thoughts.
I tend to agree that the unleashed dogs was not the best idea. It could have led to a nasty accident. Didn't know it was actually stated that there should be no unleashed dogs.

Great vid tho.

Burt de Ernie's picture

Lovely skills and beautiful edit but somebody has to remind this TURD that rules are rules......I bet nobody here wants to lose a trail because someone thinks they are above the rules...

Scottboy's picture

there was so much fight to get this trail happening & not long after opening you let the dogs free on it ? what the !!!!!!!!!

Twitchtrail's picture

Hmmm so this was not the first time Oli's dogs have enjoyed the trail. So...let me get this right: mike95 was forced off the trail into the scrub?? Whose trail is this? Scrub is OK maybe...drops off bridges or into outcrops is bad. Just lucky, Oli. You're a great rider. Do yourself a favor and play with your lovely dogs in a park somewhere that unleashed dogs can have a ball. And mike95 - don't be so shy. You have right of way.

VC's picture

Yeah yeah,..........dog this, dog that,......... whatever.........., i think its a great clip showing a great time for all. As long as they dont make a habit of it.

Burt de Ernie's picture

Moto X this ...Moto X that......

Incoming trail ban this ....Incoming trail ban that......

But we had fun while it lasted.....

VC's picture

"As long as they dont make a habit of it'. .....dogs dont ride moto x bikes, humans are the ones that should take responsibility.

thshs's picture

I'm with you VC.
Rode OMV today although not with the same finesse as Oli.
Happy to share my trails with a couple of of trail hounds, and in fact I normally do, rather than the motoX bikes I usually have to contend with at RH.
Well done to the trail builders and advocates. Well done to Oli and Davisuals also.

Burt de Ernie's picture

Guys...the fact is that dogs are not allowed off the leash and this is well sign posted.

When turkeys like this one use the trail and ignore the rules, it just gives more power to those who would appose the trails like alot of people in the neighbouring properties around OMV.

Not to mention when you are stupid enough to document and publish yourself breaking those rules.

This stupidity simply amazes me.

davisuals's picture

Hi all, thought I might pop in and share some of my thoughts regarding this whole she-bang.

Let's go from the top.

Oli spoke to me on Monday morning and asked when we were gonna shoot next. He had suggested OMV and asked if I wanted the dogs as a part of the shoot. I thought it was a cool idea and went ahead of it asking if we could shoot late in the afternoon for better light. Oli insisted that we go earlier in the day to avoid the crowd. We arrived at 1.30 in the afternoon and as far as we could tell, we were the only people there. I was interested in the new track and checked out the board that's been erected and nowhere could I find a sign for no dogs. Perhaps I missed it completely but as far as I could tell and, I would assume, as far as Oli was aware dogs were allowed. We shot the upper part of the track initially and still there was nobody there. We then continued further down the track getting to the interesting stages. We spent a long while on the first corner after crossing the road as we shot photos and videos there - still no site of people.

I'm not sure if there is a name to the corner but the large 180 cambered corner (at 1.04 in the video) we first ran into somebody. I'm not sure if it was Wilco or somebody else. I recall Oli apologising a couple of times and grabbing the dogs to pull them off the track. Whomever it was responded with "No worries" and then continued on. Blah blah blah... [shooting and not bumping into any people....]

At the pump track we were looking at leaving as it was looking ominous with thunder. We saw the Father and Son riding and they had shot off infront before we started filming behind them. I'm not entirely sure Twitchtrail had seen that was so disturbing. I can't recall either Oli or I running into anyone else.

For what it's worth - regarding the interruption to other riders - surely it's just as bad as catching up to a slower rider, it's frustrating, you say your "Thank You"s and you go past. I believe the issues created on the day with the run in's with the dogs was caused by the stop-start nature of filming sections. As you can see in the longer clips the dogs are generally fairly close to Oly and not veering off track in the way that they could get in the way of others. Obviously that's contested but as far as I have seen, that is the case.

It was never either of our intentions to cause a disruption within the community - it was merely to make a fun, light hearted video which could be enjoyed beyond the OVM users.

Nice vid! Storm in a water bottle...
Keep up the good work!

mike95's picture

Hi davisvisuals
Your video was really well edited & shot. nice one!

I had my incident with the out of control dogs running the wrong way up the trail on the Friday. This vid was apparently shot the following monday.
I pointed out the council sign to Oli that says no unleashed dogs on the friday. There are 2 signs. One where you exit the trail on Quarry road & one further down the road near the exit of the south side loop. Regular issue council signs with no camping, fires, motos, unleashed dogs etc.

I guess I didn't expected a complete lack of responsibility when i told Olie of my near miss with his dogs & pointing out the sign that says no unleashed dogs.
To see him continue riding with dogs after I pointed this out was dissapointing. To then see a video posted on the web of this was quite surprising.

It was the first time I have ever had to confront a fellow rider about something I considered dangerous to other users of the trail.

Anyway, I hope others don't see this vid & think its a good idea to exercise there dogs unleashed around OMV.

Burt's picture

with Davisuals, what is the difference between dogs or a slow rider?
Children are more of a hazard IMO as they have no control and waver around the tracks.
DID anything happen other than a great video be made? (coulda/woulda)
Were any of you actually out there to be put out?
If the dogs are used to riding they stay with their person and have nothing at all to do with you. At least he is a responsible person who actually excercises his dogs.
But I am remiss. Most people on here hates to share trails with ANYONE. MTB access in the bush only right?

BT's picture

Slow riders are predictable and don't ride the wrong way up tracks. You can also be 99% certain you won't get chased and bitten by a slow rider.

mike95's picture

Hey Burt, I think you need to read all the posts above.
Its has nothing to do about being slowed down or put out.

the dogs were on there own with no owner in sight ( i could hear him calling them from the road ) when they were bolting up the wrong way of a tight piece of mtb single track. They were out of control. I dont see this as responsible.

Children, slow riders can hear you & in most cases will allow you to pass & continue on with no dramas.

I had a very close call & would of hated to have hit these lovely dogs. Im not anti dog at all. I love them but just don't think OMV is the place to exercise your dogs.

Im all for sharing trails with other riders, always polite when passing or being passed.

I just feel that this vid promotes riding with your dogs which is against the council / trail rules @ OMV. Simple!

Burt's picture

you should bring up rules - from the same 'group' of people who rode OMV well before it was opened and had signs saying it wasn't open and the same group of people who don't want to listen to the 'rules' then the trails are closed due to bush fires...

Noel's picture

Here is my post on the AMB Facebook page after 2 of the 5 comments were from people thinking they could now bring their dogs there to run free:

" You will need a leash Christine. Sec (13-1) NSW Companion Animal Act: Dogs are to be on leash in all public areas in NSW except in designated off-leash areas. This video was removed from the Sydney North Off Road Cyclists FaceBook page as the choice to feature dogs off leash in bushland is socially and environmentally irresponsible. Fines up to $880 can be issued. Rate payers have paid for more than six off dog leash areas in HSC, yet irresponsible dog owners choose to push their impact on others. Rate payers have been requested by HSC to photo dogs off leash, and provide details (including address and dog name) to HSC for follow up by council. "It should be noted that under the Act, a failure to comply with an officer's direction to leash dogs can result in the seizure of the dog" (quote from HSC Letter). OMV is a scrutinised facility that will be reveiwed at the 6 month and 12 month point. Some environmentalists refer to MTB'ers as "ecoterrorists". When people chose to feature dust plumes, and/or dogs running off leash in promoted videos, and describe riding as "ripping it up" and "shredding" it's no wonder advocates face an uphill battle continually to try an point out these types are a very small minority desperately clinging to a desire to be 'cool'. Everything we do at OMV is being monitored, there are some neighbours totally opposed to it. Please do not congregate at the fire trail entrance, that is the current item driving locals and neighbours crazy. We are trying to come up with ways to encourage people to congregate at the trail head further down the road near the crusher plant. Obviously some kind of sing explaining that will help."

My message for those who think this stuff is "cool", and "cool" to promote publicly in a proud way is:
Come to some advocacy meetings where we listen to some environmentalists attack us. We need to keep our noses clean. Our opponents use stuff like this against us. They take video grabs of the content, screenshots. They take photos of some idiot riding a saturated eroding trail one year and put it in a video they are disseminating through primary schools, portraying MTB'ers as bush vandals. They force us to sit there at consultation meetings and watch these productions before the consultation starts. It's heartbreaking to sit in the crowd and contain yourself when it's some newb on a Kmart bike and they communicate that's how "we" are. Like Narabeen Catchment Meetings, Land Cove National Park meetings, and Council Meetings where our opponents try to tar us all with this brush.

With the riding before it was open, it was not that black and white. How about this: quietly.. "Does not look like there will be an official opening for stage 1", green light, ride without promoting it as "open", weeks later, popularity and use higher than expected, .. umm stop!!!. Somebody wants to cut a ribbon and get some political mileage, quick tell em it's closed till we build the green loop and then we can do an opening. "Closed", then rain, then another week closed, ribbon cut, "open" hmm? That's my take on it.

Well said....

Maybe the dogs could be taught to bark strava then there would be no problems! But there is plenty more than dogs to worry about while riding... It is bushland after all. I've come across a dozen wallabies and other critters while riding omv, ride in control and don't be so worried about your strava times and you will be sweet, plus the synergy guys who actually built the trail had a dog there all the time during construction, never heard anyone complain about him hanging out on the trail with the guys.

hawkeye's picture

Of course, the trail being closed while under construction couldn't have had anuthing to do wirh that, could it? Eye-wink

If the council says no dogs it's poor form to disregard the the rule, much like riding in the wet. It doesn't take too many people to think "oh i'm only one person, how mmuch hsrm can it do" before the anti-fun jobsworths start saying "I told you so, those mtbers can't be trusted" and our hard won trail access starts to unravel.

This is called self regulatiom. Suck it up. Would you rather have it forced on us or - worse - our trails taken away?

Hop fiend's picture

Very defensive about what they want to do with their children-oopps meant dogs sorry, sometimes cannot tell where the pet/child difference is these days!!!!

hawkeye's picture

Thats another reason to keep dogs away, or at least on-leash... they tend not to hang around much when they can be chased by unrestained predators.

Dopey and unpredictable as they are, i much prefer seeing them roaming the bush than domestic terrorists erm, pets. Smiling

Juliea's picture

As I see it, unfortunately or fortunately, there need to be rules. I comute to work on my MTB using a shared cylcle/walking path and come accross a lot of people walking/jogging with dogs and a lot are not on a lead. It doesn't bother me, I just slow down and go around, it is a shared path and dogs ARE allowed, so I don't use it for any sort of training (though would be nice as there are some great little spots). Designated MTB trails are just that, and we like to get out there and go for it. I am a dog lover, have 2 myself and it would devistate me if I hit a dog on a trail, even if it was no fault of my own. So as dog owners, we must be responsible for where we take them, it's our duty of care really. There are plenty of places to run with your doggies, lets use those and stop putting all others at risk of hurting anyone.

ChopStiR's picture

Firstly, nicely filmed and edited video.

As for the debate.

On my first ride at OMV I had to stop and giveway to a Brush Turkey that was right in the middle of the track (South Side).
The biggest reason why dogs are required to be on leashes in parks is because they can be unpredictable and chase down wildlife such as the Turkey I had seen.
While these dogs appeared very tame, the laws need to apply to everyone.

Keep the good vids rolling in.
