This is very cool if you have an iphone...

Its no Garmin edge, but still has the main stuff which would be useful.

If they could incorporate a HR component, I would buy it!
Cool

well it does have bluetooth...

so maybe someone will develop a bluetooth HRM?? Laughing out loud

It is missing altitude though.. Sad

Yeah... and drop the 'running' part of the name Eye-wink

Hopefully there will be some Bluetooth heart rate and power meters out soon. You note that the Edge 705 is compatible with some wireless power meters already. But this is using an ANT+Sport standard, whatever that is!

Yeah - and lack of barometric altimeter is a big minus. GPS altitude is terribly inaccurate.

Would be sweet if Google's terrain view could be incorporated into calculating altitude on one's route i.e. after the iphone app has mapped the data onto GMaps...
Come on Rob, you're not busy... Eye-wink

Actually, I have already seen sites that use Google Maps to plot training routes. When you draw lines on these they do use Google's altitude data.

Sadly as this is radar based it's hardly accurate, but better than nothing I suppose.

good point.. assuming Google knows the exact elevation for any given GPS co-ordinate location... there is no real need to calculate it... Laughing out loud

Would be grossly inaccurate though I guess cos the contour lines are only every x metres

Could never really be an edge replacement.. but I know i'd buy it if I had an iphone, even if it was just for shits n giggles... only costs $10 apparently.

Found this little app (through Google Maps) and was able to produce this:
Path Profiler for GMaps
It has its limitations but does the nuts and bolts of what we were talking about...
Full version can be found at: http://www.heywhatsthat.com/profiler.html

Sports tracker seems to do the same thing. It is an application that you can out on your Nokia phone either with built in GPS or connected over bluetooth to an external GPS unit. It then tracks your speed and GPS positions throughout your workout. Afterwards you can upload it to Sportstracker webiste where it is mapped over google maps. Quite cool, I have used a couple of times and it works well.

What is the current status of the iphone 3g unlock? Hey people, i might be getting a locked iphone from my friend soon, and i was wondering what the current status of the unlock is. Some websites i read that there are programs and other methods that are already out that will unlock the iphone. Other places, i hear that there is no current method of unlocking the iphone 3g. Can you please clarify this for me(directed more towards the people who have an iphone). Thanks!

If you have a Windows Mobile device then check out GPS Cycle Computer at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t...
It's a free download (donationware) and has been working quite well for me.
Save the files as GPX and view in Google Earth or your favourite app.

The GPS accuracy of the device (phone) will not match a dedicated GPS device but it does give you some basic logging and statistics. Useful too as you can load a map onto the device in advance and follow the track.

I can recommend Trails on the iPhone.

http://trails.lamouroux.de/

A field trial showed it to be more precise than a dedicated Garmin unit.

Outputs KML and GPX files

Plus as soon as you've finished your ride, you can post it up on Everytrail, Bikely, MapMyRide etc before you've even taken your helmet off.

Here's a sample recording: Andos + the Oaks

The main issue I have with using a phone as a GPS tracker is battery life. When I use tomtom on my phone the batter is dead in an hour. Even If I was to turn the display off it wouldn't live long enough to record a decent ride.

Has anyone got more than 3-4 hours from an iPhone?

edit: just checked the link above which is a 5 hour ride. I stand corrected Shocked

Still had a fair bit of juice left in the phone after the ride.

And that wasn't doing anything special like turning off 3G, Wifi etc.

At a guess, you could probably record about 8-10hrs of riding on the iPhone, more on the latest version, and more still by shutting down stuff you don't need on the ride like 3G.
