Ride the Bird in 2009!

Hey! Welcome to the MONT 24 Hour Race, a classic weekend of mountain biking with mates and is a must-do event for first timers and hardened mountain bikers alike.

We invite you to enter a team of four, six or more riders and fly around Sparrow's flowing single track with huge grins on your faces. While there’s plenty of ‘racing’ to be had, the MONT also enjoys a pretty laid-back atmosphere and our dedicated event management team and fantastic sponsors are there to see you have a good time, on or off the track.

The MONT 24 Hour Race will be held during the first weekend in April 2009 (April 4-5), a pretty nice time for 24 racing.

Entries in the Mont 24 Hour race open very very soon (before the end of November 08), so get your mates together and make plans to race the flowy fun of Sparrow Hill. If you want to get on the advance warning list, send an email from the website.

will bring a spare bike too!

Why does it have to be so close to the solo 24hr which is on at Majura the following weekend id much rather do the solo so no Mont.

Little-Ditty's picture

I will finally be able to do one of these! Laughing out loud Count me in.

Mont24Team's picture

It was moved to a different time of year to get some air from the congestion of the Scott 24hr, a bunch of enduros and some other events. The reality is there's only a handful of suitable weekends when you consider all of the events on a race calendar (mtb, multisport etc), good weather/temperatures (not too hot or cold), requirements of sponsors developing specific products for the event, and the fact that us organisers have lives of our own and plans for events we like to go in too... (Hmmm, Rotorua!).

We accepted early on that we were never going to be able to pick the perfect weekend for all riders, but the reaction to the date change has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are getting tons of enquiry about when entries open. Unfortunately for solo nutters it might be too close to take seriously, but... you could always take the laid back approach, put a cruisy team together, ride some fun laps and have a relaxing weekend with your mates... Let's face it, the next weekend you will be in pain city for most of it and you might need some pleasant memories to hang onto during the dark hours :0)

Step away from the computer and go ride.

Liam, you mean you are finaly going to wear LYCRA?

Unfortunately its just to close being the weekend before the solo 24hr potentially I could do a team 24hr one weekend and then back it up with a solo the next weekend I am not that crazy. I will just stick to solo 24hr singlespeed racing for the crazyness in my life.

As for dates I understand its difficult to have all the events not clash with each other and you have certainly made the best decision to not run the Mont so close to the scott this time so that’s a positive.

I might have to do the Sydney 24hr in February to get my team-racing fix early in the year and not interrupt the solo preparations too much.

Morgan's picture

You're legends. I for one am perfectly happy to train through summer and have a race in April. Beats trying to get up at 5am in 5 degrees to prepare for the October event hands down. Sensible scheduling guys-you get my vote.

Do I get a prize yet?

Mont24Team's picture

Yep, you get a beer at the end of the race.

Urrp!

May all your lines be the right ones...

...I did the '12 hours of not so much darkness' (rode 21 laps in the 12 hours) the week before this years solo. I wouldn't necessarily do THAT again but I am seriously thinking of doing the Mont, if only to get my head used to riding in the wee hours of the morning.

Being at Sparrow is a BIG motivator.

Mont24Team's picture

You know, if you are near a computer this Sunday (23rd Nov)... Hmmm, maybe after you've had your morning ride and some lunch, you might just be the first one to enter our little race.

May all your lines be the right ones...

lorrie's picture

Does anyone know what the route will be? Did I hear that it might be on the left of the main fireroad?

Mont24Team's picture

There is only a few weeks left before entries close and right now the entries are coming in pretty fast. We may fill up before the cut-off date of Sunday 22nd February 2009. Get your entries in now!

If you do miss a place to race in this years Mont, why not come down for a fun weekend anyway. Hang out or even help out, we'd be glad to see you there. There's going to be a pub band on Friday night to welcome riders, bike demos and a range of food vendors on hand so you can cater less and kick back more.

Go to www.mont24.com.au and click through to online entry.

May all your lines be the right ones...

Thanks Christine...

did you guys see there are no showers this year?
smelly men everywhere!!!!

a) Why hasn't any of the 1400 males on this site noticed this info before? Eye-wink

b) once you've read the above ...what do you visualise when you read this gem...:

"There are no showers, spas or saunas at the Mont... but there are great massages available."

the latest newsletter says there will be showers there

its says
" SHOWERS Yes. They're at the Mont for 2009... Strictly 3 minutes though! "

leximack's picture

Latest newsletter mentions the loop is approx 18km long. So i guess we are looking at 50min - 1hr 10min laps at a guess.
Double night laps are going to be long, maybe single night lap strategy may be more appropriate?
Lots to discuss before the event starts

Did I notice correctly that the whole team does not have to be present at the registration and briefing if they have already signed the waiver form? and its presented by the captain at registration?

That means can some people of the team turn up at 2 and 3pm on Saturday?? and avoid getting up at the crack of dawan in Sydney to get to Canberra by 10am?

Whats the process for the transfer of entries? I thinking of the super sub we have ... Smiling I know that there is one but am too lazy to find it.

christine's picture

your teams name i see? so, what are you called?!

Antsonline's picture

a 'reasonably-super' sub, I am really keen to get an entry. I race A-grade and just didnt get to Oz in time to enter the Mont. i am here for work from the UK. In my last 'team race' I raced the UK 12hr champs and got 3rd place. My girlf has found a team (girls only) and it means I'll just be there watching at the moment! Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Paul's picture

FYI Daylight savings ends on Sunday 5/4 which probably mean the Mont will finish at 11am.

Factor that into your whiteboard calcs

pikey's picture

Now I've got to start all over agin....THANKS Paul!

Diminished a little, as the Mont 23 hour race just sounds soft

Damien's picture

Always thought the Mont was a bit soft with no solo category.

just ask John Stamsted Eye-wink

Damien's picture

Im not going to pay for four entries so I can race the mont solo Im of to Majura instead at Easter.

rangie's picture

16.56 km loop on my gps. Awesome singletrack, with a few smallish climbs, one kinda steepish... course will be FAST !

hanging out for a ride, throw me a bone, someone?

forsale! trek carbon top fuel, spare frame/fork combo

camster's picture

It would seem (looking at the map provided on the final newsletter) that the bobsled isn't included in the 24hr course.
Can anyone confirm this?

Little-Ditty's picture

Probably because the dumb scummers wouldn't know how to ride it without falling off.

Bikeboy's picture

The bottom quarter of bobsled will be used , i think with consideration of the "gumby" factor at 3AM . I was there yesterday and tried to ride the course ... but got lost . From what i have been told it is approx 16.4 k and its a fast track , hopefully not too wet , only a little rain expected and that should help the dust

Paul's picture

Good Luck to all the Nobs and Nobettes.

Remember unless you are in a team of super humans you have little chance of a Top 10 let alone a podium so just enjoy it as a dusty and dirty weekend away with good friends, riding bikes, drinking, laughing and taking the piss.

I expect there will be many more stories of mirth than there are of victories, so go hard and ride the bird.

christine's picture

it just will not be the same without the Hairys', so when you lot are celebrating at that badly timed 40th on Saturday night please have a toast to us - I will no doubt be missing the 'special thing' some of your team do with a lighter and the home made sambucca - our team is being social but i doubt we have the drinking stamina now that we are missing Loz to fill the Hairys' shoes... you will be sadly missed

Hans's picture

Print it and visualise the berms while driving to Canberra today....(there will be some leaning cars on the freeway today...?)
