Bastards stole my brand new bike!
Well I'm goddamn furious... just brought my new $650 bike last week for Xmas, and some pricks went and stole it out of my garage. And they also took my sons smaller 4 speed hybrid. I'm FURIOUS right now.... I want to KILL! I haven't even had it a WEEK, for christ sake.
So sorry, but any plans I have for starting mountain biking just went out the friggin window.

to hear about this, that really sucks some people just don't have any respect for other people & or their property.that's why i always keep my bike in the house and try not to ride it around the streets too much. hope you find the bastards who stole it and i hope they get everything they deserve.
... but an opportunity, nevertheless: to buy a better bike!!!
After going through 2 bikes, a Giant XTC hardtail and a Jamis Dakar XC Comp dual suspension, in less than a year, I bought a Giant Reign 1 almost two years ago - same as this bike:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Giant-Reign-1-2007-Top-Condition_W0QQitemZ250345990763QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Sport_Cycling_Parts?hash=item250345990763&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A13|39%3A1|240%3A1318
I have been delighted ever since - it's the perfect bike for Sydney (imho) - rock solid, reliable, capable (more than me), pedals well. You are welcome to try mine sometime.
The Giant Trance (pref the newer Trance X) is good too. The 2008 version of the Reign was completely redesigned and the frame is about 700g lighter - would be nice, but.... The 2009 version seems the same, except that they now have a 15mm through axle.
I paid $2,850 new for mine - second hand in good condition should be around half that.

I suppose you could post it here: http://www.farkin.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=29
Post a photo too I think.
At least you have not yet fully bonded with your bike and it's not over expensive.
Looks like it's very common for bikes to be stolen from either:
-Rail stations (park only rusty crap locked ones there)
-Car parks of unit blocks (don't park them in those cages)
-From inside cars (don't leave unattended)
-Parked unlocked out the front of the local shop (only silly kids do this)
I agree to not show it off in the street etc local to you.
I live in a nice area which is very low density. Mine is kept inside the house and locked to the wall. It is also covered with an old drop sheet. Maybe they will take the DVD and not see the bike? The access door to where it sleeps is a double key deadlock, and has a security camera pointing over it. There is also an abundance of land out the back to dump a want-to-be thief corpse. Police/justice/lawful methods just don't meet up to my expectations. Actions must prevent recurrence. Execution certainly reduces the possibility for an offender to re-offend.
They also say that its a good idea to use two locks, a cable/chain one AND a D lock as they each require different tools to break them open and t is unlikely they will carry both.
Hi Colt.
I've been reading your posts and remembering the joy of discovery in the early days of mountain bike addiction. Made me smile, knowing what you were feeling like.
Can't believe it's all gone bad for you so soon. When I seen the post headline, I thought some poor bugger has had their christmas present stolen, I just felt really saddened when I realised it was yours.
I get the feeling from your earlier posts that there isn't a huge amount of cash flowing around at the moment and that going out and buying a new one might not be so simple.
Cant really do anything to help I'm afraid, just wanted to say that we feel for you and hope you can get back on the trails sometime soon.
CB
your house and contents insurance should cover the bikes yes?
i have specific bike insurance with Velosure for mine.
i hope you get another one soon.
Thanks everyone. I appreciate the kind words. Obviously you can understand how shattered I am... I had my first big ride planned for Thursday on the Terrey Hills ride, and now I can't go.
Yes, I suppose this is an opportunity to get a better bike... but I only had this one for a week!!!! And yes CB, it was bought with the only spare cash I have right now, so I can't get another for awhile yet. Considering what you guys ride, yes it is an inexpensive bike... but for me it was a major purchase, especially around Xmas time.
Oh, and I can't even put up a photo of it... I didn't even get the chance to take one.
And thanks PIVOT, but I don't have contents insurance atm.... have been trying to get around to it but you know how it is. Besides, it wouldn't surprise me if the premium would have been almost as much as the bike itself. (I wouldn't know). To top it all off, I hadn't recorded the serial number... I didn't know where to find it.... and the store I got it from doesn't record the serial numbers either. So I have NO chance of getting it back, even if I find it in a hock shop.
Colt just got taught one HELL of a lesson.
*big bloody sigh*
Thanks people. Don't worry, I ain't giving up.... just going to be delayed awhile, that's all.
Colt.
Bloody hell, Colt
That is such inconceivably bad luck that things can only improve drastically from here on in
And imagine how much more sweet that first ride will be now that you've had to wait even longer
(trying to talk it up, mate)
If you're at all ebay savvy
Have a look on there for something cheapish to get you 'off the road'
Post a bike you think looks the goods and I'm sure everyone will be keen to offer advice
I sold an old Giant Boulder for $50 that could ride Terrey Hills
FWIW I'm in the same boat re insurance
Think about it every time I read about a stolen bike
you can go! I have 2 bikes,(soon a 69er, too), can make the 2nd one "ready" if u like!
sorry to hear the bad news, bastardooosss....
Bernd
i don't have $650 lying around the house or go through two bikes a year either.
Oh bernd, thanks heaps mate. I am truly touched at the offer. However, I must decline... i just wouldn't be comfortable riding a bike that belonged to someone else, especially first time out. And if anything happened to the bike while I was on it... well I'd never forgive myself. So thanks anyway mate... you have no idea how much I appreciate the gesture.
And Andy, thanks for the ebay tip... but i'm not sure how confident I'd be about buying a bike from ebay. It's pretty much sight unseen and all that, even with pictures... so I'd be nervous there'd be something wrong i couldn't spot even when I got it. But might be worth a look just to see.
I figure since this bikes gone, I'd spend some time and do some research into whether I go for the same bike or something different. I don't know if i'd be able to convince the wife to let me spend $2K or more on a bike though.... although I did warn her the day would probably come.
Colt.
Had a bike stolen from outside work once back in the UK - custom built, $5,000 worth at the time. Puked all the way to the bike specific insurance policy I didn't have. I feel your pain mate.
However.....
I have always had home contents insurance because the peace of mind I get from the 7 minutes filling out an online form, $300 odd it costs a year to insure all my worldly possessions and a small $ excess is nothing compared to the grief the rest of the world would feel if I had one of my bikes nicked-I don't have a spare few grand sitting around for a new one either. Mate, use the 5 minutes you were going to spend replying to this, go to AAMI.com.au or whoever and get some insurance.
Hope to see you on the trail on something soon....
Don't do it - you can take the bike through an industrial washer or have it cleaned by Athenian nympho's using toothpicks and g-string floss, but you know that when you return it he will notice that single tiny little atom of mud left inside the 31st spoke nipple and HE WILL MAKE YOU PAY!
Had a friend suggest this Atomik Storm on ebay ... seems comparable if not better than my Specialized hardrock and at a much better price. But I wouldn't know for sure, so please... opinions gratefully accepted.

only spend your hard earned cash on a brand name that everyone has heard of before.
otherwise in two weeks time it will be a pile of broken scrap steel. and youll probably end up hurt.
It’s a terrible feeling when a personal belonging is stolen. I was 15 years old when my dad surprised me with a brand new MTB sitting in the garage, two weeks later it got stolen from my mates place. I walked into his place for less then 5 mins and it went from his front staircase. NOT NICE AT ALL!
If you invest in a new bike and you use it constantly that money has been used for its purpose and that is what it is there for! I wouldn’t class a bike as a materialistic item and that is one reason how I justify my history of cycling purchases. So don’t feel bad, you won’t be buying a item that out dates in one week.
Tell the wife 2k means $2000/52 weeks, 52 weeks = one hot daddy with legs as hard as steel and a bum better then an underwear model.
DO NOT BUY THIS. Any bike that comes fitted with a side stand is not for off road use. Furthermore, it weighs 17kg!
Now, shoot your friend, and I don't mean with a camera...
I see your life story reads: "Always wanted to do mountain biking, so I'm jumping in a the deep end....." that bike on ebay won't even have you jumping off a gutter nor any type of jump! Research, talk to a bike shop, keep asking questions and lastly jumping deep into that bank account might be the best beat.
That's the spirit Jeeten!
Yeh, thanks guys. I had already decided against the bike, so good to know my thoughts mirrored your own. The current plan is to use the wifes lesser quality mountain bike until March... when I will go and buy myself a better bike for my birthday. Just put her bike in for a service and to fix the buckled front rim, and then I'll be good to go. Unfortunately, while the bike is a dual suspension, it's pretty heavy compared to the Specialized. It's just an average brand too... a Konya. (Bought from rebel sports about 6 years ago. 'Nuff said?) But it's just going to have to do for a couple of months.
Haven't decided if I'm going to go to any group rides on this thing yet though.... don't know if it'd be worth the effort. I think I may just use it for some solo cross country to get the old fitness levels up first. God knows I'll need that fitness with the weight of that bloody bike.
BTW, can anyone tell me what IS an approximate preffered weight for a MTB? I have no idea what the weight was for my Specialised Hardrock.... didn't get that far!
Colt.
Sorry to hear about your luck mate but
Head to Anaconda
at Auburn
and pick up a Fluid Momentum
it was the first bike i bought and is still going very strong
on sale i believe at the moment for 495 bucks
will get you started
http://www.fluidbicycles.com.au/momentum.html
good luck
cheers
Kurt
Hi Colt, sorry to hear some aerosol stole your bike. For a replacement I think you should consider Ebay, I've recently picked up a bargain there for my daughter. It was a Giant XTC2 which is a hardtail that retailed for $1700-$1800 when new and had been only used as a commuter, the tyres are the original ones and the rear is half worn, so the bike has had little use. I paid $563 for it and it's a great bike that is a very capable XC race or general mountain bike. One thing to be careful of buying 2nd hand is that you don't buy a bike that has many worn parts unless you take their replacement into consideration, but if you have any questions regarding any bike you're interested in on or off Ebay you'll get plenty of advice here.
Cheers John.
... but do buy a decent mass market brand name (ie Specialised, Giant, Kona, etc). Boutique brands like Ellsworth, Yeti, Santa Cruz are good, but there are less available and they will sell for 50% to 100% more. Cannondale is somewhere in the middle, but tends to have much more proprietary components. Do NOT buy some no-name brand!!! Personally I like Giant - I have yet to hear any Giant owner say anything bad about their bike and most seem to keep theirs for a good while. Giant is also the biggest seller, so you are more likely to find one.
Ideally find a bike on eBay that you can go and inspect before the auction closes. Take someone along who knows bikes.
If you pay 50% to 60% of the original price for an "almost as new" bike, that's a pretty good deal, if less that is a great deal. Bear in mind that new prices have gone up 30% in the last 6 months due to the exchange rate.
If you are not too tall (and you have recently blown up an ATM or whatever), this one would be PERFECT: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/2008-Giant-Trance-X1_W0QQitemZ270323476609QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Sport_Cycling_Bikes?hash=item270323476609&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65:1|39:1|240:1318
If you are serious about mountain biking, spend a bit more - it will pay in the long run (beg, borrow, steal).
Hardtail vs dual suspension is the big decision - if you are new to mountain biking, a dually is probably the way to go for Sydney (just more fun all round) - get a 29" singlespeed hardtail later (when you are hardcore and doing 24hr solo events). One thing to consider though is that hardtails haven't changed that much recently and have less to go wrong - I would hesitate in getting a dually over say 3 or 4 years old.
Cheers
Nic
bike weight? a top of the line dual suspension cross country bike( 80-100mm travel) can weigh in at ten kilos.
at the other end of the scale is a downhill bike weighing in at twenty kilos. my custom built
top range pivot has 160mm travel and weighs in at thirteen kilos including pedals.
generally speaking the lighter the better as you know any extra will slow you down.as long as you buy a proper
recognised brand name bike it wont be made of steel and youll be fine i reckon.
NIC is right about giants. they are not the best looking bikes but they do have a good price with good componentry.
and giant on ebay is even better!
light, strong, cheap - choose any two!
I have a mate who has only kept his 'old' bike for other people to borrow and I am quite certain he would be more than happy to lend it to you, he likes it to be used. I totally understand how you feel regarding the money side and also the disappointment, but really, at least if you borrow a bike then you can get out and about and find out how much you enjjoy the sport, learn from all the boys about what bike you really want and before you know it this cloud will have a silver lining...
MEEEE
Well everyone, I have just gone and spent up big (for me anyway) and now have a new MTB to replace the one they stole. Just got myself a Giant Trance X 2. And I absolutely LOVE it!!!!
Man I thought the Specialized Hardrock was good.... but the Trance is a DREAM to ride. Yes, I'm a newbie so I'm easily impressed, but regardless this thing is great! Going to be running the thing in this weekend! Yay!!!!
Col.
P.S. I should add I just bought one BIG ASS chain and lock system so I can chain the bike to the house pylons!!
I'm glad you were able to get a new bike so soon and you've made a great choice the Giant X's are a real weapon.
Be careful storing it though if the aerosols that stole your last bike can see your new bike chained to you're house they will bring what it takes to cut the chain. I would suggest keeping it indoors or at least well out of sight. You'll have a ball doing the rides posted on this site and don't forget to ask questions about bike set up etc.
Cheers John.
you've got another bike, i live on the c/coast also get in contact with me via my profile if you like & we can hit some trails some time.I'm still on holidays for another week.
Yep, way ahead of yah. The bike is chained up in the enclosed space under the house, and the only acces to that is via a locked door in the garage, which in turn is now being locked each night. It's in the same space in which my wifes Konya was sitting and they didn't go in there at all.But suffice to say, even if somehow they find out it's there, they'll have a hard time getting in without making a hell of a racket. We live in a good neghbourhood too, so it's not likely to be a common occurance.... the theft at my place was a first for all the neighbours I talked to. I'm still sure it was just my bad luck in leaving the garage open when I went to work and some opportunistic teens needing a quick way home. So I don't think I've got someone keeping an eye on my place to see what's in my garage.
But yes, I am still paranoid as hell about it, so I'm being very security conscious now. I am concerned about the fact that they know of all the other stuff in the garage. But judging from what they took first time, I don't think they were after stuff they could sell. They could have taken a lot of better, more easily sellable stuff.
I actually just got back from another quick spin... I'm loving this bike.
And Bluray, thanks for the offer. I'll see what I can do.... but while your on holidays for another week, I'm working all week. Except for next weekend, but already got something special lined up for then. Will sort something out very soon.
Col
... I don't think you will regret spending a bit more.
Can't go wrong with a Giant. I went for a ride with the mob yesterday (Brisbane Waters) and about half the bikes were Trances and Reigns. Specialised was very popular too, then the odd Yeti, Trek, etc.
BTW, that ATM that got blown up in Gosford - was that you funding your new bike?
Cheers
Nic
LOL.... No Nic, I didn't blow up the ATM. Although after the bank is done with me I'll wish I had....
I've heard nothing but good reports about the Giant, and I'm glad to see it was all true. This thing is amazing. I was considering the Reign, but I just didn't see me needing the extra inch travel that badly. They had none in stock at Bikeworx anyway, and I wanted a bike ASAP. Not to mention the cost difference since I would have had to order it in.
Col
Another idea would be to keep your bike in your bedroom. I do...
Please - this is a family site.
to be a Giant in the bedroom!
And don't forget to take the frame number and any others printed elsewhere (my Lefty has separate serial no. for example). A nice snap of them with your camera on macro mode will do.
Did you check your policy and see if you can have the bike added to household insurance? They should cover it while you have it locked up at home at least, even if they want extra $$$ to cover outside the home.
I spoke to the guys at Velosure about... erm... insurance and explained their name came up online a lot.
The guy there gave me a referral code to spread about... if anyone does insure with them, if you quote this code it would be nice: 0992
