Roadies: check your lights!

Almost hit a couple of brothers (cyclists) while driving home at dusk yesterday. One wasn't wearing a light and the other had some bees dick useless light. Sure, i'm glad there wasn't an incident, but i see riders with no lights or a lot with really tiny lights all the time and it's frustrating. It's unfair to drivers. It would be hard to blame a driver that hit a rider in such circumstances. Please, if you ride on road at night, look at your lights from a decent distance some time and see if they are actually effective (big and bright).

(Manufacturers shouldn't be allowed to sell those tiny shyt ones as bike lights. Roadies are the biggest offenders because they're always getting the stupidly tiny ones.)

I've seen the same thing too many times.

I like lightweight minimalist stuff as much ( if not more) than the next cyclist, but I'd rather carry a couple of hundred extra grams than be dead !

The street lighting in Sydney if frankly appalling so you have to rely on your own visibility to give motorists a reasonable chance. I always wear a bright top and run two front lights and two rear lights. I these are reasonably bright multi LED flashing lights. The fronts are just about to be swapped for some AyUp lights so that I can see things too !

I must confess that I have a small minimalist shyt light which looks lovely and weighs nothing. It is attached to the back of my helmet to help add some height to my riding profile. I'd never consider using it as my only light but I know plenty of cyclists ( mostly roadies, it's true) who would.

Any time I think about this I imagine a police officer telling my kids that they will have to grow up without a father because he cared more about weight saving than he did about them.....then I go and buy more lights !

I can't agree enough!

Ive been riding across the bridge every day you do see some varied lights and reflectors on the bicycle. I've some poor setups and some that would put Buck and lozza's set ups to shame. Some people really do need to get their set up sorted.

Correct if me I'm wrong but a bike neeeds a front and rear reflector, reflectors on wheels (pedals??) and a front and back light. Ayups which are helmet and handlebar mounted would be perfect.

The cyclist also needs to take extra care in the dark (and wet) as all driving and riding suffers from the tunnel vision scenairo at night.

And its always the car that you don't see or pick up at the last minute that might collect you - a car nearly hit me the other day and we had a combined speed of 50km/hr, all becasue he didn't see and turned right in front of me across pacific highway and I didn't anticipate that he would be so stupid.

Assume nothing when it comes to riding in traffic!
