What shoes?

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi all.

Just wondering what kinds of shoes people are wearing for riding. I am not keen on the cleats as i know they can be a bugger to get off quickly. I have platforms on my GT but the shoes i wear don't seem to be gripping the small spikes too well, epsecially if you get a bit of moisture or grit on them.

Is there any particular type of footwear you wear or brand? I am thinking a lightweight hiking shoe with reasonable grip would do the trick? I tried a pair of joggers but didn't like the feel, or lack of, between my foot and the pedals.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,

Anthem X colour schemes

Nov 2010 I sold my soul to get an Anthem X3. Although only entry level she's been a lovely bike. I've loved riding her around Manly Dam, Cascades, Red Hill & so on. But recently, I discovered a massive crack. No problem. Lifetime Frame warranty. Off it went back to the LBS where I purchased her. Replacement was approved by Giant except that they didn't have a replacement X3 frame. I was offered an upgrade to the X2 frame. Who? What? The bike is merely 8 mths old ? I now have to have a Grey red frame with mismatched blue & white bits from my X3.

Cleats

Today I went for a ride on an old bike of mine. Just for fun I decided to test tighting my pedals (this was a road ride by the way). It seemed that with tighter pedals that i was able to go much faster, or was it just me?
I'm just wondering if i was imagining it. Anyway whats the point of having really tight shoes if you cant get out of them and crash (my shoes are really lose).
Thanks

Scott Scale 80 or Avanti Aggressor 1

Hey Guys, Im new on the forum, you guys have some pretty awesome stuff.

Ive been tossing up between the Scott Scale 80 and an Avanti Aggressor 1 for my entry level mtb. They both have similar specs, although the Aggressor comes with clipless pedals and a Rock Shox Tora. That said, it is also $50 more expensive at the moment. The Scott is a good deal lighter than the Avanti at 12.6kg, but with more mediocre parts.

Clipless pedals are not essential for me (i prefer platform clipless), so i will probably replace them at some stage.

Seat post slipping down

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Yes, my 90-odd kgs is to blame but I have a continuing problem with my seat post slipping down. The clamp is super tight so that is not the issue and I just do not know how I can stop it from slipping down. To prevent all sorts of horrible creaks the seat post has been lightly grease and I assume that this is going to add to the problem. Is there something else that I should be using, is there a loctite type product that would be useful in greasing the post to stop creaks but also helping it stay in place?

chain lube

Hi Guys, been out of the sport for 5-6 years and have recently got a new dualy and since so much has changed in that time i was wondering what everyone uses for chain lube. Pedro's used to be my choice, found it quite good but not sure if they still have products available. Cheers

Rear tyre replacement

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Being relatively new to mountain biking, this is the first tyre I've had to replace but I don't really know where to start. There seems to be heeps of styles, widths, tread design etc.

I have a few questions that hopefully someone can answer to help me make sense of it all. If they're stupid questions then I apologise in advance but if you don't ask, you don't find out!

The type of trails I like to ride most are Manly Dam, Appin, Mount Annan and occasionally the odd fire trail. The bike it's on is a Felt hardtail.

This is what's on the bike atm:

Presta Valve?

Just bought a new inner tube today (Maxxis 26x2.20/2.50).
It has a Presta valve (see photo) and i have no idea how to inflate it :/ (Don't say use a pump)
Rookie question i know, but i guess that's what this site is made for.
Any advice would be helpful as i would like to ride asap, ie tomorrow haha.

GT Sensor 2.0, or 3.0… or 2.0 / no 3.0; but 2.0 oooor 3.0? — help!

Hi guys,

On the process to find a new bike for the week-end rides, I felt in love with the GT Sensor bike.
I've looked a bit in depth the specs, and can't make up my mind if I should to buy a Sensor 3.0 or the Sensor 2.0.
