MTB Gear
Upgraded 3x10 -> 1x10
After seeing the SRAM 1x11 setup, it really got me thinking... do i really need my 3x10 anymore?
As a 'zero' cost option, i decided to see if i could convert my XT 780 drivetrain to 1x10.
Step 1 was looking at gearing charts. The setup I chose (32x 11-36) would take away a lot of taller gearing i never used, but also some shorter gearing which i did use... but only because it was there.
Step 2: The conversion.
Im not going to provide a step-by-step guide as its fairly simple. The only parts you (and when i say you, i mean me) will need are:
-Single chainring bolts
Dual v Hard tail 29er
Thinking of moving to 29er and wanted peoples thoughts on dual v hard tail.
The most technical riding that I do is Manly Dam & Appin and want to understand if a hard tail would be too "firm" for the technical trials?
Other trails and events that I ride are cascades, st ives, terry hills, dirtworks, fling, doctor
Cheers
Anyone got/ridden one of these? La Pierre Zesty 314
Seen one for a bit above what I have to spend but wonder if it'd be worth the extra. I'm very much an XC rider and this looks the part.
Any opinions welcome.
Cheers
SRAM XX1 (1x11)
When I got into real CC/AM MTB about a 18 months, I needed every gear on my 3x9 (on the short end anyway). Then my dual suspension came with 3x10, and as my fitness has improved i've found I really don't need the small chainring, and doing research for next years build, I decided on XTR 2x10. Now I see SRAM have a 1x11, with a massive range of cogs, and im thinking it may be the way to go.
Below is a table that may help:
Current (Giant Trance)
24x32x42 x 11-36
Lowest ratio: 1.29m
Highest ratio: 7.41m
(M travel / pedal revolution)
SRAM XX1

Tyre side wall repair
I am have issues with side wall tears on my front tyre.
I recently replaced my Kenda Nevegal with a another kenda Nevegal because of a side wall tear. I have had about 5 rides when i noticed today that i have managed to get another small tear.
Back to flats.
I finally gave in & purchased some shimano shoes & pedals. I have been very happy with my flats for as long as I can remember, but I thought I'd experiment.
I have tried for about a month now, & my left knee does not like it at all. I've attempted to change cleat positioning, but no improvement. The biggest issue is unclipping. It twists my knee in just the wrong angle. Even on the loosest setting.
Anyone got any opinions on this?
Got 2k to spend..absolute tops.....was looking to buy used with hopefully some upgrades..... then saw this.

Anyone had one, ridden one, got an opinion.
Seems like a lot for the money but don't know much about reliability, build quality etc.

Frame paint wearing off
The paint is wearing off my frame quite easily where it's in contact with cables – I can see the metal of the frame. I bought my GT Sensor '11 last year (11mths and 5 days on today).
It started at the back, where a cable is touching the frame (seat post) which is moving because of the rear suspension going up/down. Then it was at the front, because of the steering… and now it's everywhere a cable touch the frame.
