Winter commuting jacket
Hey all,
I've been searching for a decent winter commuting jacket and I'm struggling to find something suitable.
I currently have a pretty expensive goretex hiking jacket that is great at stopping the wind but I get really hot and sweaty wearing it riding. Even with just a jersey underneath I get to work sweating like nothing else - even last week where my Garmin recorded -3.
I carry a stupidly big backpack with all my work gear in it but it is a Deuter one with the mesh stuff on a metal frame that gives some ventilation.
More on commuting
I wrote a while back about doing a bit of training on the commute so am following with an update. I've discovered that going over to Cremorne and Mosman is a nice little detour and now the route looks a bit like a tour of the lower north shore. Check it out:
No Excuse!
This is interesting:

Based on a series of test rides, this map shows the distance a healthy person can cycle within half an hour, to or from Sydney's city centre. If you live in the "no excuse zone" and work in the CBD, try cycling to work a few days a week and enjoy the benefits.
Think I might have to print this out and stick it up in our office
Commuting behind a Getz
Nice day to commute - makes a change from the rest of the week.
You've got to love it when you have to brake downhill behind a Hyundai Getz, but when you get to the steepest climb on the route they still can't get away[1].
Talking of which, perhaps I'll do the silly commute training route if it's still as nice this evening:

[1] OK - so they got to the lights at Union/Blues Point slightly ahead, but I just trundled to the front of the queue and lost everyone along Lavender St.
Commuting to work....
Allround tyres
I used to ride to work with semi slick tyres (Maxxis Overdrives) on my hardtail and these were pretty good in term of weight, rolling resistance, puncture resistance and they held up well on wet and slippery pavement corners.
The problem I have is that I want to ride offroad also eg on the weekends and not have to change tyres all the time and I don't have the money to buy another lightweight wheelset with matching XT disc rotors and cassette so I can have one set with slicks and one with knobblies.
Did you ride to work on National Ride to Work Day?
National Ride to Work Day
October 17th is National Ride to Work day, and if you work in the city there's a free breakfast on down on Hickson Road.
