Issues with Edge500 firmware 2.30?
Annoyingly my Garmin Edge 500 has begun acting up when connecting to the PC's USB port.
I'm not completely sure, but think this might be as a result of updating to the latest version of the firmware (unit software). In fact, checking the last upload that went without trouble was version 2.29 and the unit now has version 2.30 (although - interestingly this is what the unit says it has, the upload I just managed to work using a laptop says 2.29 still - that's a worry!) would say that is the case.
As you might guess from the statement above, I managed to make this unit work, but only when plugging directly into a laptop (Windows XP). When I connect it to my desktop which is a Linux box (kernel 2.6.32.11-99), the following messages come out:
May 9 18:23:44 kernel: usb 1-3.1.2: new full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 54
May 9 18:23:44 kernel: usb 1-3.1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=091e, idProduct=240c
May 9 18:23:44 kernel: usb 1-3.1.2: New USB device strings: Mfr=0, Product=0, SerialNumber=5
May 9 18:23:44 kernel: usb 1-3.1.2: SerialNumber: 0000de7d415e
May 9 18:23:44 kernel: usb 1-3.1.2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
May 9 18:23:44 kernel: scsi28 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
May 9 18:23:47 kernel: usb 1-3.1.2: USB disconnect, address 54
You will note that the Edge boots and presents itself as a USB Mass Storage device. All good there, but then 3 seconds later it decides not to play and disconnects.
I have noticed that when one connects this to a PC it does the same thing, only after appearing, then disappearing, it re-appears and works.
At this time I'm not sure that it's an issue with Linux or the Edge, but thought it worth sharing - anyone else seen this issue?
What is really annoying about this, is even when a device didn't have Linux support I was able to connect to a Windows VM running on the desktop, but given the Edge now disconnects itself that just isn't possible.
Has anyone got an Edge with it's latest firmware showing up correctly as a USB device on Linux or Mac box?
Update: Hold the phone... this seems to connect and stay connected with an older version of the Linux kernel (2.6.27.7). Will point fingers at the Linux Kernel for now.

Hi Rob,
my edge complains about the firmware being 2.29 every time it comes up on my mac in garmin connect. I have tried updating it a few times in webupdater but it still complains. While its working I am happy to wait until 2.3x
Does anyone else get the same problem with and Edge 500?
Paul
Interestingly when logged into GC today saw a message saying 2.30 was out. Eagerly booted up the laptop (an old XP machine is now the only way I can use the Edge - talk about a step backwards - even the Edge 305 works with a VM!) but Garmin Web Updater said 2.29 was the latest.
Great!
Firmware 2.40 has fixed this issue... if anyone ever cared
