rocky trail enduro awaba
hey,
im a new newbie, and i want to enter a race, i was thinking about the rocky trail 4 hr enduro at awaba, but ive never ridden there. Is this a good choice for a first race? is the track very technical? Also due to work commitments & weather i cant get on trails every day though i do try ride on the road at least 3-4x/week for at bout an hr and hit he trails on weekends when i can, would i need to do more trail training to pull off the enduro at awaba? (skill wise im at a level were i can get over rocks roots and smaller logs (still working on getting higher lift of my back wheel, n better weight shifting for the bigger things...) and small drops if theres nothing int he way to complicate landing
or is yellomundee a better or worse choice of track?
cheers nicole

Awaba isn't technical just sweet flowing single track
Awaba is not overly technical. There are a couple of lines that are (Pie Line for one) but that won't get used in the race. There's really not much in the way of rocks and logs to negotiate...Maybe a couple of log roll overs. There's a also couple of steep and fast decents but from the sounds of things you'll be fine. The majority of it as Brian said is nice smooth, flowing single track.
You'll love it.
in my opinon of tracks is easier than Manly dam but haven't been to Awaba yet I can't compare the 2 , if you want technical training try going to Appin in my point of view
thanks, ok sounds sweet, guess just have to work on fitness, and keeping to to a good line so people can overtake me smoothly...hehe
I did my first race/4hr in feb this year and I wasn't coming from as good a fitness base as you (certainly wasn't riding 3/4 times a week) I did try to get as much time on the bike as I could, so I could enjoy the experience. The best thing I did was get as much info about the trial and the length of each lap and set myself a race strategy and stuck to it, in my case I did two laps and then stopped, hopped off the bike for 5 min, had a drink or snack then jumped back on for another two laps. It was very conservative but I finished and that was my goal and did 8 laps, 1 more then I thought I would!
I'm going to Awaba and haven't ridden there, but will be fitter then the first time and will still have a race strategy (maybe that should be stop strategy)!
awaba is the perfect place for your first event, smooth and flowing not technical great fun, there should be afew nob mobbers at this event that could offer friendly advice, will be a fun day .
I'll most likely being going in this and if I do the solo I think the 4 hour will be enough.
excellent good to know there will be some nobmobbers there, im bit concerned bout this weather, not really a master of the muddy trails....especially muddy trails with hills....and rain tend to make me curl up witha doona rather then a bike ... plus manly dam is my local trail and its just been way to wet...tried week before last but there was water pooling at the bottom and the trail was soft...i didnt want to cause damage to the trail by riding when it was too wet, so i ahvent really had a chance to jump on a trail much recently...itching for the sun to come out a lil more...
Idea for race plan is good! i think its an 8km loop....i think i read that somewhere but dont quote me i could be wrong. though i like the 2 lap then rest idea.....
I'm thinking about doing this as well. I haven't entered yet, but hoping to get it organised by the end of the week. Looking forward to it.
hey, does anyone know of a good place stay close to the start of race day?? i wanted to camp but my friend thinks it will be too cold...so i said i would at least look into motels close by..... nothing to pricey.... yeah i havent officially registered online just doing the same thing trying to get everything together first
Cessnock is probably the closest big town to Awaba as then there is Newcastle and its surrounding suburbs...I had to stay at Cessnock on business and I rode Awaba also. From memory it was about 20mins away.
Some locals on here could probably point you in a better direction though.
I'd be looking western lake macquarie around Toronto or morriset. There is also a bike friendly caravan park on the water at wangi.
Toronto tooo but I was beaten off the mark , I might be there as a Marshall , if I am I will stay at my brother inlaws at Eleebana which is on the other side of the lake .
Very excited, I just entered my husband and I into the 4 hour team. I look forward to hopefully meeting some fellow nobmobbers! We plan on doing the other 3 events in the Rocky Trail Grand Prix, anyone else have that plan? Should be great fun...
ok sweet, yeah ive been looking into toronto a bit...il check out the caravan park at wangi.... ill give morriset a look cheers!!
i also want to do this event, but am under 18 and the entry categories are confusing me, as it doesn't have ages just juniors teams etc, and i dont know what to enter as!
them at there site now before you cant get a spot , its the best option ..
Well, I just registered for the 4 hr. Can't wait!!!
@ muvro, guess ill be seeing u there....ull probably be overtaking me but hey for my first race the aim is to finish, im not gonna stress over times!!
Yeah, for sure.
LOL, that's my aim too. I'll just be happy to get through it. I wouldn't have a clue what to expect. I'm thinking of heading to the dam on saturday and riding around there for 4 hrs and see how it goes. If i get to 4 that is. lol
i figure its all in the race place.... ride for 2 hrs rest a lil ride some more...or alternatively rest every couple of laps for like 5 mins in the transition stage... thought it would be good time to graze and keep the fuels up!! im just hoping theres not any big hills....hills are not what u would call my strong point....
Hi, Martin here from Rocky Trail - as long as your parents or guardians sign the waiver you can race in every category including solo.
Let me know if you have any other questions and see you at the race.
So I take it the best way to go about this, is to be up there the night before.
Is it possible to sleep in the car at the event do you reckon? I've got a wagon.
I'm just thinking that driving up that morning and trying to find a park, get sorted and registered all before you race is going to be pretty hectic. I figure as it's my first event, that getting the rego sorted the night before might be a safer option? yeah?
Then all I have to do is get up, eat brekky and warm-up. Or should that be thaw-out. lol
I was told earlier this week that there is a new no camping policy from NPWS, but let me confirm this next week when I am back in OZ. Will post. Cheers,
Martin
Sweet, that'd be great.
Cheers
Sorry - mixed up the events. no problem with camping at round 1 in awaba. Round 2 at Yellomundee is the one that needs to be confirmed.
that sounds like the go arrive friday arvo get a spot get rego done and do a night lap, then sleep in the car and be ready to go sat morning
excellent!
Awesome!
We'll have to organise a meeting point the night before as a meet n greet. Since I've not actually met anyone from here yet. I might put a NOBMOB sign on the car.
Looks like a tent, sleeping bag and lots are layers are the go.
May require Wild Turkey to protect myself against the cold!
Wished I hadnt sold my wagon!
A meeting point of Friday is a great idea.
I don't think it's going to matter whether you're in a tent of a car. It's gonna be bloody cold! LOL
I wouldn't have a clue what it's like up there, or where to meet. But maybe if you look out for a green Holden Adventra (commodore wagon) with NOBMOB on the rear QTR window, that can be a start for a meet point maybe?
Not sure what time I'll be getting there. but I'll probably leave sydney around 4ish. I know it's gonna be crap traffic, but got no other choice.
Is there a mud map of the layout. ie where we have to park etc in relation to the track. Or is it going to be sign posted etc.
it will probably be sign posted where to go and i expect there will allready be a number of people there, if you go to the awaba listing on nob mob you can check the google map that shows where to go, if you drive up the dirt road into the place you cant go wrong.I should allready be there I am hoping to sneak off early from work to miss the traffic I will be in an old green falcon wagon see you there
Is that road in still a goat track? I was there in Jan and it was basically a 4WD track to the main area carpark. I wonder where camping would be?
Maybe a recon ride the week before?
I rode there today and it has been grated. You would make it in a lowered sports car.
I got the falcon in with no problems on australia day but there has been a lot of rain since then!I reckon they will make sure the road in is ok otherwise everyone will be parked out on the road.
Allthough a sunday morn ride next week could be a go.
The road in is perfect. Some of the roads on the Northern Beaches are in worse condition
The club spent an absolute fortune on the road in, so it is passable in all but the worst conditions. Water runoff has hopefully been controlled as well.
No need to park at the bitumen anymore.
I've been there once before for a social ride. We parked in the carpark right next to the track. I presume this carpark would be out of bounds and kept free for tents and official sort of stuff. I'll just keep my eye open for some signage and a heap of other cars parked together. lol
im going to get there friday arvo to check out the track, ill be going at very very cruisy pace cause i've never even seen the track, all are welcome to join, and then i thought id register that night, and grab a feed from somewhere close by... if anyones interested so if u see a girl looking slightly lost, and trying to find where to park in a blue mazda 3 give a shout out cause it is a high likelihood its me!
Nix, did you end up finding a place to stay? Or are you camping?
Did 5 laps in just under 4hrs at the dam yesterday... Oh, man that hurt! But it's given me a good reference point, to how hard I can go, so I actually make it to the end.
there as a marshall & sweeping the track , maybe my only chance to ride there , till I get another chance later in the year , I better get in training this week.
found a place in morissett, im still thinking bout it tho...i enjoy camping but trying to get a good nights sleep in the cold before my very first race when im already gonna have race nervous stopping me sleeping already, makes me think a warm bed might b a bit more conducive to a good nights sleep... how bout u, u camping? well done on the 4 hrs of manly dam, that will put u in excellent stead considering manly dams got that middle technical section and awaba is meant to be some nice flowing single track ( or so ive heard...pls correct me if im wrong). i swear, i dont even care if i am dead last, i just want to finish and have fun! im just entering to clock some more hrs on my bike really!
Yeah, you're probably right about the cold/sleep thing. Plenty of layers, usually fixes that.... LOL I won't be camping as such, but I will be sleeping in my car (wagon). I'll have my bike to keep me warm.... hahaha
I'm thinking of also taking a jerry can of water, to save a) looking for and queing for water, b) So I can have a quick camp freshen up, do the teeth etc in the morning.
It would be a good idea to take water with you. Last time I checked there was no potable water at Awaba.
For all the race newbies, event organisers always ask you to be self sufficient with water and food even if they have the facilities.
Thanks for the heads up guys!
The jerry can is a definite then...
Might have to cook up some pasta for dinner and organise some brekky too.
Not long to go now....
Really looking forward to this one - We will have about 200 riders, so double what we had last year
Red Bull just confirmed they will be there as well. So get ready to get some Wiiiiiings.
See you all Saturday (or Friday if you want to camp - I will ask what the fire policy is out there, but a small one shouldn't be a problem)
do you know what loop we will be riding yet? as i like to fit in a few laps this week to settle the nerves
The mean pinch climb most likely won't be part of it, that leaves the track we had last year plus another km or so. To be honest, I haven't been out there in a while but know from the club that the track is in top shape.
Also- registration will close Wednesday night and there won't be on the day rego. So please sign up online if you wish to race.
I'm thinking mostly blue loop then ...i rode it a few times wed and thur and the track is in excellent condition
