Angry Doctor 100km first time - advice needed.
Well, I've been riding for a while, but not this far. I ride for fun at Awaba and Ourimbah, but this 100km event has me a little worried. 50km would be fun! 100km? Why did I bother listening to you Andrew..... So, any advice?
1- Is there overtaking/passing etiquette?
2 - Do I really need some vasoline?
3 - Dust mask?
4 - Extra equipment to carry besides chain lube, tyre puncture repair kit, etc ?
I've been following the 'Chain Reaction' training guide. I think I'll be firing until 60-70km. If you see me cramped and lying in the gutter around this mark, be sure to say hi!

Yes. Not so important in Enduro events, but still...
When you will hear a rider coming up behind (yes - do not wear a music player!) try and judge when they will be upon you. If there's an easy place to pull over do so. If not, let them know you know they are there and looking for a spot. If they came flying up behind you it might be nice to just pull over and stop (tell them you are stopping). If they gradually caught you over the last kilometre it's clearly not as desparate, you can probably hold out for a wider part of the course to let them past.
BTW, this isn't so important at Enduro events, because people generally fall into groups with those of similar speed anyhow. At circuit events this doesn't much happen and the chanced of having a much faster rider pass you is much greater (ie. they are lapping you).
Most people use something 'down there' on a long ride. Bepanthen is good. Udder Butter. Whatever. Try it on your training rides.
On that last point - don't anything new at the event. Try nutrition, hydration, etc. on training rides.
Nope - you won't be able to breath. Have been to some pretty dusty races and don't think seen anyone wearing a mask.
Erm... powerlink, cable ties, electrical tape, multitool, etc. If it's raining spare break pads. But these are in your pack all the time anyhow, right?
I appreciate the tips! The extra equipment I already had on my checklist except for the brake pads... Do they really wear out that fast in the wet? I expect that I'll need to change them in a month or so anyway.
You'd be unlucky to wear out a set of pads on a 100Km race, but they are so small & light, I always have a set in the pack.
Speaking of 'training rides', I'll be doing the Andersons/Oaks probably next weekend. I'll try a few minor things here in regards to nutrition etc... I've read up on your notes - thanks for that! I'm looking forward to the hill of death. Hello granny ring.
Yes pads can wear out in 100ks.
I wore out my brand new pads at capital punishment well before I had finished the 100k's
By the time I finished I had pretty much worn through the backing plate....... almost into the piston. That was in rediculous conditions though.
Take a spare set with you, never know what conditions you will get.
And if the forecast is for bad wheather, use sintered pads and not organic.
Should get much longer out of the sintered.
