I'll be there, no matter what the weather.
Ride Database Entry:
The Oaks
Meeting Point:

Glenbrook station carpark.

-33.769197, 150.622262 (Glenbrook Station Carpark)
Details:

After being reminded about this on the Wednesday night ride, it's time to put it up for next year to give you all a chance to drag out your secret weapons.

Guidelines are:

1) Bike not to be worth more than $200 new or needs to be over ten years old.
2) No disc brakes.
3) You have to carry it out with you even if it is stuffed.
4) All stacks are your own fault for riding such a heap of S*&t
5) No clipless pedals (unless the bike came with them originally)
6) Must be prepared to have an embarrassing photo taken.
7) Anything else I have missed here....................

Of course these are only guidelines and are pretty flexible. Just don't turn up on your full carbon MTB unless you want to be sweep!

Jump on whatever's steaming out of Glenbrook at 8:23

Meet back at Glenbrook for some new seatpost bolts and a gentlemans operation or two.

ChopStiR's picture

Sweet, I think my Giant 2002 Yukon now makes the cut!

Chuck's picture

Nice one. Stephen has been talking about it I gather.

Will need to get the shitter up and running again.

stephen's picture

Yep been itching to ride my 1991 700c proflex dually down the oaks.

J the B's picture

After flattening the Wheeler's rim last time (http://bmorc.com/node/19883), then cracking it when trying to straighten it, I'm a-wondering how much life the poor things have left in them. Thousands of kms over the years, in all kinds of conditions, with rim-brakes, and the things are almost see-through. I can see I'll have to brush up on a few episodes of Bush Mechanics before this one:

http://youtu.be/dsswIRkAjfU

The Brown Hornet's picture

Stephen, is that with a flex stem?

Chuck's picture

I've made some necessary upgrades to the old shitter for this year. New steel bear trap peddles(from my old HT) with extra grip as the plastic originals fell apart, a bigger baggier rear slick Dirt Jump tyre(freebie) and costs more than the whole bike, front Deore v-brake(freebie again). The rear wheel currently has four broken spokes and may/will need to be upgraded if I fail to remove the free hub soon.

Nerf Herder's picture

sorry ... my shitter has discs ... although I might have to start building my tandem

Pedalgogy's picture

I could ride my 1990 Diamond Back Apex. Not sure where I put the rear STX RC derailleur though.

BM Epic's picture

will find some junk with wheels, there will b a clean up day soon!

stephen's picture

Yeah JP with the flex stem and elastomer rear swingarm suspension. I will have to take a photo and post it.

Muninjitsu's picture

Could ride my 1992 Avanti Pro Comp, would need to find some knobs for it.

I take it the ride goes from Woodford to Glenbrook?

stephen's picture

1992 Avanti qualifies for sure, better with slicks if that's how it's rolling leave them.. Yep on the train and down the oaks. Last year we included the single track, the bikes did not fare as well there as the open trail.

Muninjitsu's picture

I'm not riding on 1" pure slicks, does the 2003 SS qualify, it could squeeze under the $200 category.

Muninjitsu's picture

May do the tandem, 2 riders should equate to the qualified value.

The Brown Hornet's picture

I'll stoke if needed!

Chuck's picture

Any bike qualifies. You just won't get an embarrassing photo if it doesn't meet the guidelines.

Pedalgogy's picture

I will start rebuilding the Diamond Back today. I'm still looking for the rear derailleur. Wow, the original seat is twice the size of my but.

Muninjitsu's picture

Im stoked! Thanks JP, but if I do bring the beach cruiser Ill try and get my son along to stoke it, but dont like my chances as he will probably want to ride his own new MTB.

Pedalgogy's picture

The 90's Diamond Back Apex is taking shape thanks to a donar bike from Flea Bay. I might even bring it on a night ride soon. When I put it next to my Scott Scale, the seat tube looks to straight, the chainstay looks to long and there appears to be some missing gears on the rear end. How did I ever ride 32/28 as my lowest gear? And I need to put in the handle bar streamers...haha(my wifes comment!)

stephen's picture

Finally took a pic this arvo, here is my bash ride.

1991 Pro-Flex Offroad

Pedalgogy's picture

Nice vintage ride I will have to work out how to put photos on here.

bikemad's picture

a small fortune back in the day!

Tristania's picture

I've got one that's gotta be 20kg, no rear suspension which I'm currently trying to sell for $30. I call it a 20/20 - 20 years, 20 kg. The problem is that there's nothing actually WRONG with it... well if I come, I know what to bring! Or is it ok if I bring a scooter instead? Or I may try to find a 12'' child bike in the rubbish collection. (Is that an automatic win if I finish the ride with one of those?)

Hoping to make this ride. It seems ludicrous but lots of fun. Will be just starting uni then so will need to find out what's going on then.

Tristan

Chuck's picture

Do it Tristan, and if your bike isn't 20kg, I say we add some weight to slow you down.

Tristania's picture

I'll attach my heaviest pump, as many tools as can possibly fit as well as a chain lock to make sure it's 20kg.

Ok, I'm in though - making sure I get a spot before it fills up to 10000 people!

Username2's picture

Im coming for sure! Still trolling ebay for a 'sweet ride' though, if i cant find somthing to fit the build it looks as if ill have to borrow a Giant ATX870.... hmmm

Gilbo's picture

Anyone know when the next bulk rubbish is due. I'm gonna have to scab through the trash for a clunker. The missus isn't keen on me using hers, something about it getting broken.

hathill's picture

They are doing Wenty Falls at the moment but I couldn't find anything yesterday. Looks like the scrap metal guys have been through as there wasn't even a kids bike to be seen on the north side. Leura starts this weekend so get out there Lee!

Username2's picture

If its any help guys, many of the scrap heap bikes simply end up in a scrap metal yard, Normans scrap metal in peachtree rd Penrith lets people look around for anything really (bikes included) and i got my pub bike there! Its a Roadmaster 10sp 27" machine!!! AND the scrap yard only charged me $13, why? Because they simply weigh the scrap on the way out to cover the cost for them to buy it! Only problem is its luck of the draw as to whats there when youre there, as there's lots of scavengers throught that place.

Pedalgogy's picture

7 speed cassette, chain and V brake pads came in today fom Jenson. It will all be put on during the weekend ready for some fine tunning. Might have to get some thin chunky tyres for that complete retro look. I will be going toe straps to get away from clipless pedals.

hathill's picture

You're all taking this thing waaaay too seriously!

Muninjitsu's picture

Steve did your parts come in under the $200 mark!

ChopStiR's picture

In 5 years time there will be over 100 participants with a sponsor/charity backing! Plus the most ridiculous rides you would ever see on the Oaks!

Chuck's picture

Ha Ha Ha, but only if I get too serious about it. I'm still to fix the old bike yet, might need to requisition some more parts.

Muninjitsu's picture

I might ride my 1992 avanti pro series comp. just need to put dirt tyres on it. BTW it came with clip less pedals in 1992 so I will be sticking with the original set up. It well qualifies being 20 years old.

Tristania's picture

Any extra points for bringing a bike older than the rider?

Muninjitsu's picture

How long do we actuallly anticipate this ride taking? Weighing up wetherr or not to bring my 10yo son for a spin.

hathill's picture

To accurately answer this question correctly, we must first take into account a number of factors.
These are briefly:-

  • Estimated time to completion - T
  • Average age of bikes - Ba
  • Average age of riders -Ra
  • Average Fitness of riders - Fr
  • Number of participants - N
  • Quality of bikes - Q
  • Length of ride = L
  • Likelihood of alien abduction - Aa
  • Number of gorgeous members of the opposite sex encountered along the trail - Sx

As the average age of bikes increases, the duration of the ride T also increases due to the increased probability of failure. The same rule also applies to Ra and L.

On the other hand the higher Fitness Fr and Quality Q the lower resultant T.

Number of riders has the effect of squaring the expected time as does factor Sx although this is extremely unlikely!

In the case of alien abduction, everything depends on the level of anal probing - Ap.

So to put all this in a simple formula:-

T = (((T+ Ra + Ba + L) / (Fr + Q)) / (N^2 + Sx^2) x (Aa +Ap))) x Fudge Factor

Therefore T = Anybody's guess Eye-wink

The Brown Hornet's picture

You have too much time on your hands G!

Chuck's picture
There looks to be some parameters missing from the formula. Riders talking about their bikes takes up a large amount of time from what I have witnessed, this could potentially double the ride time of a typical Oaks ride. Combined tyre pressures also needs to be accurately accounted for as the dreaded single track pinch flat is another major factor.
  • Talk time = Bs
  • Tyre pressures((Total psi*N)/2) = Tp
hathill's picture

Another variable is the number of other riders out showing of their shiny new Christmas bikes -

People Out Showing Expensive Rides on Saturday or P.O.S.E.R.S.

We could also encounter Weirdo's Asking Newbies to Kindly Excuse Random Stacks Sticking out tongue

Muninjitsu's picture

You have also left out Weather =W

Tristania's picture

If there's 15 bikes, let's say between us we get
- A flat tyre each
- 3 people have to carry their bikes out
- 2 OTBs
- 4 broken chains

T (extra) = 15 minutes x 15
Another hour
And another hour
And another hour

Whatever, let's say T = 6hours

After all the ride cancelling due to rubbish weather, it'll be nice to know that I can head out for this ride and not worry about trashing the bike!

Muninjitsu's picture

What about broken derailluers? Broken bodies as result of OTB.

hathill's picture

Reminds me of the old joke about where fifteen minutes into the flight, the captain announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, one of our engines has failed. There is nothing to worry about. Our flight will take an hour longer than scheduled, but we still have three engines left." Thirty minutes later the captain announced, "One more engine has failed and the flight will take an additional two hours. But don't worry ... we can fly just fine on two engines." An hour later the captain announced, "One more engine has failed and our arrival will be delayed another three hours. But don't worry ... we still have one engine left." A young Blonde passenger turned to the man in the next seat and remarked, "If we lose one more engine, we'll be up here all day!"

Username2's picture

What's the current wager on a bush mechanics single speed conversion being performed come bash day?

hathill's picture

10 to 1 on.

J the B's picture

Driving down to the big smoke last night, saw a rusty old Malvern Star awaiting collection on our street. Only had time to throw it under the house so haven't inspected it yet, but I reckon its chain is even rustier than Gilbo's latest find. It has skinny tyres that need replacing, and I have no idea whether the brakes or gears are serviceable. Won't get a chance to have another look at it until the weekend, but it might mean I have a second basher if anyone wants to ride a Star...

TeeJay's picture

Will be there with the 99 Specialised FSR along with my 15 year old daughter who has done The Oaks a couple of times over the previous year. Muninjitsu, happy for your 10 year old and yourself to join us
for this epic event.

hathill's picture

FSR? Pure luxury!
