Round 6 of 2012 XCM Series

2012 is the 8th running of The Briars Highland Fling, Australia's MTB Marathon Championship. The Fling is a mountain bike marathon for all. It offers a scenic and challenging route through forests and farmland in the Southern Highlands of NSW, hammering singletrack, forest tracks, dirt road and less than 2km of blacktop.

Do the Full Fling (approx 110km), the Half Fling (approx 55km), the relay Flinging Threesome or take on the even bigger challenge of the 100Mile Fling

There is also the Casual Fling, a 14km Participation (untimed) Ride for those not feeling up to taking on the races above. An opportunity for those new to mountain biking or those less fit than they’d like to be, to get on a bike at the Fling.

The main racing is on Sunday 11th November but there’s plenty happening on Saturday 10th too including the Bundanoon Dash, (including The Battle of The Businesses) a fundraising 6km ‘sprint’ race (it’s not compulsory!) along with entertainment, food & drink, gear displays, demos, Kids MTB Skills Course.

$35,000 of prizes including $15000 cash!

Full Flingers 7:20am, elite 8:05am and just first over the line takes all

Ant with 45 mins plus traffic it will be a close one.

Brian, if he does catch you - at least you will have a wheel to hold onto for the last 10km Smiling

Brian's picture

For the record. Out of the 5 Marathons so far this year I've averaged 1:05:26 behind the winners.

My worst being the Convict at 1:26:05 and my best being the Wollombi at 0:38:39 behind.

Last year at the Fling I finished 1:34:02 behind the winner so I'm hoping for a big improvement Smiling

ps's picture

Better lift your game then. I just got back from a pleasant training ride with an ave temp over 30. I think Ant dislikes the heat more than you do. Sure you don't want to join those of us hoping for a hot day?

Brian's picture

I'm running bottles for the Fling so 20 degrees would be perfect.

Logan's picture

It's all about who can suffer the hardest then!

Brian's picture

I'll be suffering regardless if its 15 or 35 degrees.

Andy, so are we going to see you at the start line?

Brian's picture

So far its saying fine and 23 degrees. I don't normally look at this site but its the only one i could find that does a 10 day forecast.

http://www.weatherchannel.com.au/WeatherMap#NSW/...

Logan's picture

Yes, a certain forum user has been kind enough to lend me his HT 29er for the race.

So I will be lining up in Elite Mens for the 110km Fling.

Antsonline's picture

Went out there this morning and rode the loop (or at least the loop that was gonna be the race loop until last weekend or so) at pretty much full-bore.
It was wet. My bike needed a real clean up.
The advantage was just how grippy everything was. It never gets any easier though.

So - I'm not going into huge detail here, as its too complex, but the new loop REMOVES the 'final' climb in outer-limits - the stinker. It stays on the fireroads where it used to turn into what has now been heavily 'forrested' (by the bee-keepers boxes).
The race is likely to have a bit less climbing now, and also be slightly faster (more open fireroads). Once you have knocked over the KOM hill (the 'kick') then the significant climbing is done.

Brian - the pendulum swings in your favour....

Brian's picture

I was looking at the splits I've set myself and I need all the help I can get. This will be the first marathon on my new bike, first marathon on different nutrition, first marathon using bottles. I hope it all adds up to a fast race Smiling

Jubas's picture

I was out there yesterday too.. started off in the drizzle which was less than pleasant. Lots of grip compared to when it's dry and dusty! Going to see what shape the bike is in this morning..

jp's picture

Looks like there will be a fair bit of rain this week, but it should clear by Sunday.

Brian's picture

Just wait and see. Last weekend it was looking shocking at the beginning of the week and ended up being the dustiest ride I've been on for ages.

Lach's picture

Anyone else doing the Rolloff? I thought I'd put my 100+ kg to good use and give it a go, but I see in the fine print now that the finish is uphill, which kind of negates the gravitational advantages of a bit of beef. Might have to try to find a skin suit.... or maybe I could use my wetsuit... Smiling

Brian's picture

Just 5 sleeps to go...

Talldude's picture

This is gonna hurt I remmebr last year being in the most pain on a bike ever whilest doing the 100ker.

Still it should be fun..... hahaha

GAZZA's picture

To whether I'll be doing it.
Missed the state champs last weekend due to my back being completely frozen up.
Still in pain but have a few appointments booked this week for treatment.
Will have to wait and see??

Brian's picture

I always find this forecast the most optimistic Smiling

http://www.weather.com.au/nsw/bundanoon

jp's picture

I like optimism. And looking at the Synoptic charts, I think there's a good chance Sunday will be cool but sunny - perfect riding conditions. The trails will no doubt be a bit damp as there will likely be a few heavy showers over the next couple of days. Should be great!

Brian's picture

Gazza, I hope your back comes good as it would be a shame to miss it.

Cheers
Brian

Brian's picture

3.2mm this morning at Moss Vale but the extended forecast is looking even better

http://www.weather.com.au/nsw/bundanoon

GiantNut's picture

Brrrr might pack the long knicks - 6 degrees overnight means a fresh morning, highs of 21 - but better than 38!

Logan's picture

Raced the Husky in Nicks and a short sleeved jersey, wont bother wearing more than that for the Fling as no doubt it will warm up!

Antsonline's picture

Shorts and a jersey for me. Maybe will wear an under-jersey, and whip it off during my 5min window in Wingello.

I think conditions are looking like it will be a very fast race. Tactics might stop it being super crazy fast like last year....

GAZZA's picture

Does anyone know if you can drop down from the full fling to the half at short notice?
I know Hugh is pretty strict with rules and stuff but my back is completely stuffed and don't think i can put myself through the full?

tate's picture

probably not a good idea doing even 1km if your back is completely stuffed. if my knee hasnt sorted itself out by then i wont be bothering to head down only to trash it in a half race.

GAZZA's picture

I know it's stupid Tate but i've had back problems for over 20 years now and it gets like this quite often.
I've actually done 4hr races when i can hardly walk at the beginning and ended up being fine after the race!
There's no way i'd want to suffer for 5hrs with the added pain in the back but for 2 or so??????? Eye-wink

tate's picture

fair enough. hopefully we'll both be at the start line!

Brian's picture

My back and knees are always causing me grief but tend to come good on the bike. In saying that, my race prep Sunday morning will most likely include some panadeine Eye-wink

I'll be thinking of you all when you're climbing up that bas*rd grass hill at the 100km mark

shano's picture

Just got to grab the snickers bars on the way down
Twenty-one (21) should get me over the line! Barf!

Antsonline's picture

Chris Jory in the Elite men.
Very very classy roadie.

Logan's picture

He is on Maddog's Bianchi as well.

He won NSW Elite Mens Champs this year at Kurrajong, a weapon is the right way of describing Jory.

Only 41 Entries in Elite Mens now.

Elite Females is gonna be a tough group as well with Jenny Fay, Jodie Willet, Imogen Smith, Jenni King and one or two others. I think that could be one of the tightest Fields.

50km will be a fight between Mark and the Ward's I would expect. I think Mike Blewitt has a screw loose, backing up after the Croc to do the 100 Mile.

Supagav's picture

Good luck to all you guys racing this weekend, I have been looking forward to this race for a while but have had to pull the pin, a bit of a shame as I was carrying some OK form too.

Antsonline and Logan in particular I will be watching for your results with great interest!

GiantNut's picture

All the best guys hope you have a good one...Look forward to seeing you elites as specs on the horizon soon after the start...smash it PS!
Have a safe one too.
Say Hi on the grid - i'm easy to spot - riding a ultra rare Giant 29er Eye-wink

GAZZA's picture

Looks like its to late to downgrade to the half Fling so, despite my recent bad back, I'll be starting the Full.
For someone who trains nearly every day, my last ride was last Thursday which was a 60km road ride with 1800m of climbing, I've done 2x 20 mins light sessions on the wind trainer yesterday and today. I plan on going out for an hour long easy spin on the road tomorrow morning with another light spin on the trainer Saturday morning.
I feel like I've been off the bike forever. Even though I didn't do anything on the bike last weekend as I was in bed with my back, do you recon I would have lost much of my fitness? Was the rest period too long?
I'm so paranoid about getting on the bike Sunday and my legs feeling like lead!

Antsonline's picture

There is a fair bit of research on this. Your base levels of aerobic fitness wont reallly drop. What seems to be impacted is your ability to sustain threshold efforts - so perhaps your speed up the longer climbs, and your ability to really 'push on' on the flats.
If you have the ability, tomorrow try and do a few threshold type efforts - as a reminder to your body of how to push hard, and how it feels. Nothing too hard, but enough to get your heart up and beating again.
If you really cant do that, then just remember to start slowly (ideally at the speed you imagine yourself finishing at) - an even paced effort will mean your legs never feel like lead - until the last 10km or so...
Starting too hard, with no hard training in the preceeding days - thats suicide.

Brian's picture

See you at the start line Gazza

GAZZA's picture

Will get out in the morning and test the old worn out body. Cheers!
Bri, I'm pretty certain you'll give me a flogging on this one Mate?
Seems like you're pretty revved up to go???
Good luck!

Brian's picture

Gazza, weren't you talking like this before the Scott24 and then went out doing doubles Eye-wink

philberesford's picture

eh Danny Eye-wink

Brian's picture

I think its just the week leading up plays with our heads.

GAZZA's picture

The last week has been awfull with my back.
I really wanted to do the state champs last week as a good sharpener to finish off the training.
Now i just feel slugish and really not ready for a big race.
sounds like your prep has been perfect?

Brian's picture

Just trying to psych others out making it sound perfect Eye-wink

Logan's picture

Check it, the mind games come out.

ps's picture

I have to agree with you that Brian is raring to go. I even think there have been 4 or 5 rides over the course in the past few weeks. Pretty sure i even saw a secret roady training ride one day that didn't make it on Strava.

The thing I am most surprised about is no offer of a six pack bet from you this race? Didn't you beat me by 5 minutes out at Yellowmundie?

Brian's picture

What ride would that be Paul, all mine go on strava as I'm always trying to catch Wayne with the ytd kms
