35th Lap - Solo 24hr

In case you didn't know, this weekend saw the 24 Hour Solo Champs, in which three gallant riders were listed.

Huge congratulations to Carlgroover who placed 12th overall and 2nd in his category with 35 laps in 24h33m. I don't know how you do it!

Damien has a DNF with 20 laps in 21h13m - don't know what happened here, but that doesn't look anything to be ashamed of!

Reading from MTB-OZ seems the Egg injured his legs and must be feeling pretty disappointed after doing 18 laps in 10h47m. The Spoon (who isn't on here but is a local lad deserving of support) sounds to have had some trouble...

The Spoon was going brilliantly. 9th overall and looking strong. It was a truly impressive performance until he broke himself at the 22hr mark. He pulled into the pits holding his arm like he had done his shoulder, but he just couldn't hold the bars. He couldn't even get off his bike without assistance. This drew the attention of the commissaires who called over the St Johns Ambulance who pulled the plug on his adventure in pain...

... carried him to the showers, sat him on a chair and we let him soak for half an hour. He was at least then able to stand and dress himself (thank deity!). He then shuffled back to camp and sat down for a few hours eating and drinking (water), at least able to smile again (well, a Spoonboy smile, anyway)...

...It was very impressive. I've not seen someone break themselves quite like that before and was thinking of Gordo in Georgia when it happened.

Ouch!

Wishing you all a speedy recovery/cool down (however you see it) and well done everyone!

P.S. Jason English won the event with 47 laps in 24h:02m - crazy!

Decided not to finish.

I couldn't sit on my seat any more it really was stinging down there but I am happy with my result of 20 laps.

As for the race I was on the bike till about 11.00pm and decided to have a break 4 hours off with 3 sleeping. I was back on the bike at just after 3.00am and rode through to about 6.30 before stopping for another shortish break I did a few more laps before 9.30am and then realized it didn't really matter if I didn't finish.

John was a machine he just flicked the switch and didn't stop he could of waited near the end in the forest with a bunch of other riders so as not to do a last lap but he just kept going and did an extra lap which pushed him up in the overall placings.

This year for me was really just to have a look Id like to have a serious go next year.

I had trained and all was feeling good.
I don't think I've ever been more prepared for a race.
Then I've managed to over extend my achillies tendons on both legs during the race approx 8 hour in.
Everything was going to plan, eating right, drinking right, riding well and not to fast,
Overall 10 hours of riding a few breaks to fix niggling problems 18 laps (approx 170km?)

I have to find out what this achillies problem is and how to avoid it.
I had the same problem late into the race at the 2006 24hr which is a similar trail.
maybe there was too much road training involved Smiling.

theres a write up at the link below.

Congrats to all for crossing the start line, it's an accomplishment just to make there in good health!
John - sensational mate!

Hopefully you all recover in time for DW or the next 24hr... Eye-wink

Thanks guys for your support, I had a very satisfying race, and I feel the old 100 days of training paid off even though it was cut short(by 2 weeks) by having to do an earlier race than planned.
But I'm happy now that in the Australian championships I placed 12th, if I did the other event it may have meant less even if I'd won. I was very fortunate that in the week before the race my friend Craig volunteered to be team mechanic along with my with my wife looking after food and drink etc, a big thanks as it's way harder than it sounds, Damien graciously wouldn't accept any help from my crew not wanting to affect the assistance they were giving me.
I started the race at a fairly comfortable 34min laps but after about 10 of those I was never getting back to that pace, I ate and drank very regularly and only had 1 bad lap where I wasn't sure how I was going to finish the race. For a bit of fun I did the fasted last lap I could after nearly 24hrs of racing it was 43.14.
The course was promoted at 8.2km but was changed and was at least 9.2km so with 35 laps I smashed my 300km target with 322km.
When asked after the race would I be back next year I said "I don't think so". Oh dear, I'm already thinking about 200 days of training and a 350km target for next year.
I've been a little scarce on NoBMoB rides lately, as I was focusing on the race, anyway give me a week and I should be able to sit on a bike again and catch up.
John.

John you are a machine - great effort.
Damien hats off to you it is something I could never attempt especially those 4.30am training rides. You may need one of those plush female seats that Pikey uses.

Damien, I love that pic through transition, I'd been pushing for 3 laps to get an extra lap in and hadn't pitted in that time, I was low on water but not knowing if Garry James (category winner) had blown up or not, thought it best to have a go.
Unfortunately my pit crew had no time for pics so the job was left to my son Mitchell who many of you know - well he better stick to riding bikes Smiling

Just saw a document titled, "Qualifiers for 2008 24Hrs of Adrenalin World Solo 24Hr Championships from 2007 Scott Australian 24Hr Championships and 2008 Australian Solo 24Hr Championship" Bit of a mouthful, but you get the significance?

Anyhow - Mr Groover's name was on it! Well... his alias anyhow! Eye-wink

As was that of Dr Eggs and the Spoon. So, will you be taking a holiday to Canada, boys?
