Sydney 24 Hour Course

So, as some of you might know, a few of us have been helping out a bit with track building at the Sydney 24 hour course at Del Rio. I have permission from the organiser to share this with you all, the track will be something like this:

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/7430495

For the record I rode the climb 3 times on Saturday and only made the fire trail section non-stop once. There is some single track with switchbacks (think the lower part of Ourimbah but steeper with sharper turns) that no-one could climb. Don't worry - there is more work going on and that will be sorted for the event.

So yes, the climb is brutal, but once up the steep bit it's nice enough. The downhill part is pretty much all single track and is quality stuff! Then you get to rest a little on some dirt roads and through some fields, etc. around the resort back to transition via a bit of play on a 4x track.

I reckon there will be a lot of mental toughness required to convince yourself 'just one more lap' but the legs get a nice rest on the flatter part to prepare for that climb once more.

As they say, hills are your friends Eye-wink

Well looks like there'll be a lot of walkers on that climb for the race. That looks like one nasty hill.

I know at this stage it's purely academic but for fun what sort of times do you think are reasonable?

Stuart M's picture

over 24hrs

LadyToast's picture

Wise guy huh? Smiling

I concede.. t'was a stupid question

Rob's picture

Well, not really smart. The winner may be well out in front in which case they may stop short of 24 hours Sticking out tongue

And by jingo was it a good answer.

Damien's picture

The winners are the people entered.

Who dont ride in the back of an ambulance due to exhaustion .....

I think i need to do lots more tough 4 hour training rides , like up the downhill course at Stromlo on Monday night again and again and .......

Stuart M's picture

There is one among us that has ridden for nearly 23hrs and then got a DNF despite the incredible number of laps he had completed in solo class.

Isn't it a case of on the bike at 24hrs or DNF?

Actually Dylan it was a perfectly legitimate question that I completely understood the intent of but everyone's spelling has improved so much lately I hadn't nothing else to make a smart arsed comment about Eye-wink

I just read the rider briefing and it does not say anything about having to ride for the full 24 hours. So I'll guess that most laps wins, no matter how quickly you did them. Smiling

Erm... perhaps the organisers might like to clarify that though? Eye-wink

ar_junkie's picture

When there are riders/teams on the same number of laps at the end of the race... then it's a case of who completed the total laps the quickest.

Carlgroover's picture

In the 3 different 24 hour races I have done the finish has been different in each one. The Bright orange events race at Dargle
was that once you have completed a lap you are in the results, in the Corc solo champs at Majura you had to cross the line after 24 hours have passed, the Scott 24 hour at Stromlo you had to cross the line after 23 hours had passed.

were 'helping' then why didn't you get them to make the hill nicer? That hill, even before we meet is NOT my friend...

Damien's picture

you have a granny gear to make it easy.

leximack's picture

can this track be riden anytime, ot is it on private property?

Don

christine's picture

had granny gear too.... I am NOT looking forward to this weekend at all now... or ever!

Rob's picture

The track is on private property so... stay away 'til race day. Poetic, eh? Eye-wink

Stuart M's picture

Why don't you let him ride as Blondie and you can just socialise. If he wears those grey knicks he could pass as the female rider in the mixed team, he'd just need to wear a wig

Hi Don,
The track is on private property and I am about to find out what the procedure is to ride there outside of official events. We might post a build day/ride at the forum to get you guys to ride some groves into the track and possibly help us extend the switchbacks. As for the format: we will most likely go with the 1 lap and you are in the results way, but please check the Rider Briefing closer to the day.
Cheers,
Martin

You dont need to ride it , this hill HAS to have a chairlift or i am wearing joggers !!!

Don't worry about the hill, its not that bad & with a little grooming over the coming weeks it should come up real nice (I got up 90% of it on a DJ bike with a 36 tooth chainring about a month a go).
The decent from the fire trail will make all the climbing worthwhile. Certainly one of the best bits of track I have ridden for a while now.

christine's picture

with all due respect you are a freaky roid boy rider, so your getting up it on your DJ bike doesn't really help those of us who are normal...

trailburner's picture

Unfortunately the track is not open outside race dates.

Photo's of the trail here http://www.rockytrailentertainment.com/galleries...

Course profile looks brutal, but the photos of the single trail look sweet and should make the climb more than worth it. Double thumbs up to the trail crew from me.

The climb all appears to be in one hit though, so as long as you pace yourself on the hill, the rest of the trail will be great.

Being around wisemans ferry, I just hope its not a HOT day. The sandstone is more brutal than the climb could ever be.

christine's picture

I am already in a panic about this silly course so you using the word 'brutal' is not helping in any way, shape or form you know!! Smiling

Buck's picture

This is funny listening to you Christine. Every ride you are more and more worried.

Come Valentines Day you're going to have a mental breakdown Smiling

christine's picture

maybe i should take some valium!
normally i am ok about these things.. YOU know why i am in a panic... bet you would be too!!!! lol

Damien's picture

You are a good balance for the roid boy contingent of your team just go out to have fun the hill will be easy enough to walk. Smiling

christine's picture

while i am traipsing up the hill they all get to have time for a good sleep?!!

Paul's picture

..sleep, shower, shave, game of monopoly, service the car, Junkie can rebuild his drive train, Steve can plant some vege's for dinner, Rob can have a very very good lie down, Whisper can brew coffee for the mob, etc.

ANON

trailburner's picture

...for all of you who like to climb until the knees are bleeding: Juliane and I were out there yesterday and in a 4 hour session including a pair of snippers and a very happy chainsaw, we cut a new singletrail in. It cuts off about half of the nastiest firetrail climb and offers sweet singletrail instead. It also lessens the elevation by about 10m, which doesn't sound like much, but if you do 30 laps it's 300m less climb in your legs.

All that remains is to work on the first set of switchbacks and smoothen what remains of the firetrail climb and we will be ready to race!

So if you haven't signed up yet because you were afraid of the hill let me quote a fellow countryman: COM AN - DO IT NOUWGH!

LadyToast's picture

Noice work Martin,

Although I hadn't seen the hill, from it's reputation I was thinking splitting off the side of the climb was a good way to reduce the pain, I'm looking forward to checking it out. If you need any help out there let me know.

Dylan

Thanks for your offer - Rob posted the workdays here: http://nobmob.com/node/7770 and here: http://nobmob.com/node/7771

Feel free to come along, build a bit and check out the track if you got time.

Cheers,
Martin
