Note that this ride is Cancelled.
When:
Saturday, 18 April, 2009 - 07:00
Duration:
5 hours
Come Rain or Shine:
If it has rained on this trail today, I won't be there.
Ride Database Entry:
Cascades
Meeting Point:

At the St Ives gate (Acron Oval), Douglas street, St Ives.

acron and douglas, st ives, nsw
Details:

CANCELLED due to wet weather

4 full laps of Cascades with all gates.

This is my cross-country up-hill training ride. Long enough to have a similar elevation required for Dirtworks, close to home enough for a good rest after.

Please take care (observe the speed limits) on descends from the gates down to creek, and watch-out for walkers. On recent rides, i have seen more bike riders than walkers.

If it rains even moderately within 2 weeks of the ride, i won't be there, as Cascades does not usually dry out quickly (imagine water and sand in your drivetrain - ugly, and costly).

This is the profile for 3 laps:

For those thinking, "Yeah, but ride the same 15Km four times - boooooring"... let me assure you it's not like that. Yes, the course takes on a new meaning each lap and you notice things that were previously missed. Like the pain.

Those training for DW100 will be glad to know that this ride (16 gates) has the same vertical in 40Km less distance, if you can handle this the race should be a pleasure! Laughing out loud

Bring it on!!

Buck's picture

What drugs have you prescribed yourself Tien?

This is total madness. I haven't planned this far ahead but I'll leave this open for a more soft ride Smiling

Brian's picture

I'm in only if it dries out as that place totally trashes your drive train.

dangersean's picture

After soaking most of my drivetrain in degreaser and putting my bike back together yesterday, I wont be riding cascades if it doesn't dry out.
Not that i'm scared of 4 laps or anything Eye-wink

staffe's picture

Did 50ks there yesterday, a few lube stops kept the drive train running all the way to the end.

4 laps AND labelled as a training ride - Yeah! Sounds like a proper 'roid' ride Smiling

christine's picture

what a fun ride this looks! I just can't wait!

i will be there but don't any of you roidys worry, I will see you on the track somewhere, and be doing my own thing.

You couldn't pay me to try to ride with you lot, but if i potter about and you ride past that will keep me interested!

Buck's picture

Hey Christine

Let's do the technical DH a few times and then we can spectate as the silly buggers come by in serious pain Smiling

christine's picture

would be hilarious, we could have a rest and heckle them as the went past! lol

Eyeball's picture

I want to do it.
I'm not looking forward to it.
Argh!

After only 1 lap last time i should be able to at least do the quarry trail this time and possibly one other....

I think you guys are obsessing with the climbs and forgetting the Big Picture.

There is 2k of ascents and 2k of decents but the course is 104k long - you need to be practicing riding the flat bits (there are 100k of these) which make up the majority of the race.

LadyToast's picture

That is a very good point Paul, the E2 zone is of most use on the DW. I have been doing a fair bit of road riding recently so I'm hoping that box is almost ticked, my hill climbing probably needs a refresher course. I do remember LOTS of pinches and long hills on the DW, it's certainly not anywhere near 100km's of flat.

That said, the main reason I am going is that the ride sounds plan silly Smiling

Flynny's picture

Paul, it's 2km of elevation gain and fall (ie 2km vertically along the x axis) not 2km of riding distance (ie along the hypotenuse).

The actual distance you ride in the upward direction will be much greater

Rob's picture

Yes, yes, but if you can ride hills then riding on the flat is soooo much easier in comparison. It's like when you ride a big bike in training then a skinny one on the race.

Well, that's my logic and am sticking to it! Sticking out tongue

Buck's picture

So how come you ride that skinny tyred scum bike as training then Rob? Sticking out tongue

Rob's picture

Meh - out of necessity and lack of time. It's not that skinny mind Sticking out tongue

LadyToast's picture

Those skinnies do have their plus side - they sure make you fast!
