Northern Beaches Trail Advocacy

Talk about anything to do with creating/maintaining/campaigning for better trails.

Signs

I think if NPWS had their way every park would be fenced off and we would look at them from elevated walk ways.

Make the trails sustainable, don't sign post them. People are willing to help make them more sustainable.

It should be about making the trail "sustainable" to users, not removing the users. Do they really think the population and usage is going to drop. The highest increase in unstructured recreation in Hornsby Shire parks has been walkers, followed by Bike Riders. It is increasing and people don't really care that much about signs. Signage does not work.

NPWS Protest

The Australian Horse Alliance are one group we need to talk to as they seem to have been fighting this good fight longer then us.

I searched the NPWS site last night using the "keyword" [Mountain Bike trails] and can you believe a "0" result to my search even though the Royal National Park has "Official" mountain bike trails.

EPA patrols target mountain bikes in Samford Forest Reserve

Something bad is happening Sad

FYI, this reserve is in QLD by the look of it, but the point is we should all try our best to ride legally and not let something similar happen here.

04 Mar 2008

Mountain bike riders who don’t stick to designated trails in parks and reserves and damage the natural environment could face on-the-spot penalties.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s Senior Ranger Justin Lee said trees had been illegally cut down and vegetation cleared to construct a massive jump at Samford Forest Reserve.

Proposal for Ku-ring-gai Mountain Bike Trail

found this on our local council website - anyone heard of this plan?

PSRRG 75 – Bushland Mountain Bike Trail

"The proposal to construct a mountain bike trail adjacent to the new fire trail at Golden
Jubilee Fields in Wahroonga was discussed, including the application for a NSW Dept of
Sport and Recreation Regional Sports Facility Grant for this project. Frank Freeman raised
a concern that if the trail is constructed, parking spaces will need to be incorporated into
the overall design."

Warringah's Open Spaces

Here's some good news... I have been invited to join a focus group discussion on recreation by Warringah council. Seems this will be happening sometime in May.

The invite says:

We would like to invite you to be involved in the discussion on recreation in Warringah's open spaces, parks and reserves.

Council has begun the development of a Recreation Strategy to provide a clear vision and direction regarding the future provision, planning and management of recreation facilities and opportunities here in Warringah.

Bye Nicole

I bumped into Nicole on Saturday during a Manly dam lap (whilst attempting the remove the majority of epidermis from my knees (but that’s not for here). I mentioned how well the recent maintenance day seems to have served the circuit and she agreed.

However she won’t be organising any more trail days as she is off to another position.

Hornsby Council Draft Park Management Plan

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I heard from Hornsby Shire Council that in the next few months they will put a news item (or something) on their website that will invite the review of parks management plans in the area. This will have specific things in it about MTB and BMX apparently.

I guess it will be here somewhere: http://www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/news/index.cfm

Opportunity Knocks!

I think you guys have already provided me with contact info but.....I work at Fairfield Council so I have links into what is happening in the new Western Sydney Parklands; where the old Olympic MTB track used to be. The old mountain bike track is gone now as Council was made responsible for maintaining it after the Olympics and could not get 'user pays' to work.

To whom it may concern,

My name is Greg Pike; I live in Belrose and ride my mountain bike with a group of fellow local residents (Northern Beaches Mountain Bike Group). One area we enjoy riding is the trails in and around Oxford Falls, off Morgan road, near the remote control Aero Club.

MWMTB or other organised trail advocacy?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

So, getting little traction in organising anything here I'm wondering what my club MWMTB is doing for trail advocacy in sydney? (having paid my admittedly paltry fee...) From a pretty brief search on Farkin and the MWMTB website all I could see related to trail advocacy was that the MWMTB trail advocacy officer is Paul Lidgard. But what's he done with my $10 Eye-wink

We're really not very good at publicising what we do in this respect so I'm left frustrated and optionless to do anything useful other than write waste paper basket fillers to pollies.
