Help with replacing chainring

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi guys,

I have a noob question about changing chainrings. Basically, how the heck do I do it! I have a copy of Zinn which hasn't help much. I want to replace the granny chainring. The crankset I have is a Shimano FC-M442-8, Octalink Spline. Do I need to take the whole crank off before I can get to the chainring? Or can I leave the crank arm on and slip the rings over it?

So far all I have managed is to take the bolt off the crank which is pretty pitiful! (see pic). I haven't tried undoing the chainring bolts.

Still available, this wheel comes with everything except the skewer. New price. Now only $50. I have found one of the spokes has a tiny bend in it. should be pretty cheap to have it replaced.

Syncros DS28 26" rims
SLX Hub - Just serviced, greased and smoooooth!
160mm Centrelock rotor
XT Cassette 11-32 9 speed
Ritchey rim tape
good tough wheels that can handle pretty much anything you can throw at it. They are marketed as All Mountain wheels so they're pretty damn tough. Not for racing but a great replacement if you've borked you're rear or want a spare for commuting.

$50

Singleton MTB track update for 02 Jan

Status:
Green/Open

Been 12 months since I visited Singleton and rode this trail and I have to say it's terrific. Extended out to nearly 9 kms with some re-routing, fence crossings and some genuine flowy singletrack, this trail is well ridden in and worth a visit if you're in the Hunter. Thanks for the work out there guys!

Manly Dam update for 01 Jan

Area:
Manly Dam
Status:
Green/Open

Dry and good traction for the most part.

Thanks to the guy on the Prophet with Fox forks and XTR brakes, learned a new line off you on the Golf Course sniggle where that rock sits right in the way on that left turn berm in the early section before the big roll-downs.

Not bad, considering ...

Date:
1 Jan 13

Considering the temperature today (low 30s) and the humidity, still feeling smashed from the weekend's spin class efforts, and that this was the first lap where I'm still riding conservatively checking out the track condition, not unhappy with 43:50.

The second was was a dead loss, though, temperature had risen and got to me and I had nothing left in the tank. Sticking out tongue Gave up on the idea of a third after coming to the top of Cootamundra Drive.

I reckon I'm going to have to make spin classes a regular part of my event build-up this year.

2012 a year of fails

I have literally hundreds of hours, hundreds of gigabytes, of great trail riding from my first full year of Mountain Biking.

But here's 1 minute 44 seconds of total incompetence.
