2011 Fling - nobmobbers everywhere
Overall another well run event by Wild Horizons. I guess the support from the Bundanoon village makes it seem special.
Suffered badly with cramps in this race last year so was hopping for a trouble free race and an hours improvement for a finish time around 5:30. Had taken a different training approach in the lead up so was also keen to see how that worked out on the day.
A good ride
Hoping for sub 3 hours but not unhappy with the result.
A messy start with the self seeding very curious and I blew too much energy trying to find a good wheel. When things settled down I had a brilliant run sitting on the wheel of some strong riders.
The Gu stage started well and I was enjoying being on the bike. Very pleased that I was out cornering and descending other riders, and enjoyed the single track sections. This is a new experience for me (that is the out descending part, not the enjoying part).
A bit of a disappointing effort...
Hadn't done the Fling in 2010, but from what I'd read about the course changes, was hoping I might get in around 3:30. Had some issues with my de-veined left leg swelling in the heat earlier in the week and my right knee playing up from a lot of walking on Tuesday, but after a gentle spin on Friday, all seemed OK by the time I headed off to Bundanoon on Saturday.
An eventful event
This was my first event so had no idea what to expect really. Set off with a couple of mates who I'd been training with so knew we were about the same pace - but I got a fast line around the outside of a few slower riders at one point so ended up a few hundred meters ahead - that was to prove costly! Hit a fast rocky downhill about 10k in and heard what sounded like a shotgun, but was actually my rear tyre / tube giving up.

West Head Closed due to hazard reduction burn
Just in case anyone is lucky enough to be considering riding in the next two days please be advised that the whole of West Head is now closed until further notice. This obviously includes Elvina, Salvation, Towlers Bay, etc, etc. I would imagine Duck Holes & Centre might also be worth avoiding depending on the amount of smoke.
I have been advised that this should only last for a couple of days but please take note and check the NSW NPWS Fires, floods and park closures page for more details.
Currently it states,
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service wish to notify that as of 12:00 midday on Monday 14th November 2011 the West Head / Lambert Peninsula area of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park will be closed to all traffic and pedestrians due to a hazard reduction burn. The area closed includes West Head Road and all West Head walking tracks. It will remain closed until further notice.
