Menai (Lucas Heights) update for 07 Jul

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.
Status:
Red/Closed

The meeting was an opportunity for "representatives" of all stakeholder groups to state their case in regard to how the land is managed. Various sections of the cycling fraternity were represented, as were local residents, local police (not AFP, interestingly), Sutherland Shire Council, Gandangara LAC, and various ANSTO personnel: communications, operations, OHS, etc. The meeting was run in a very diplomatic and cordial manner with everyone provided with ample opportunity to voice their concerns and suggest possible ways in which the scenario can be managed in a mutually respectful and beneficial manner. While no resolutions were arrived at (nor were they expected to be) it was determined that further meetings would take place between those parties present today. ANSTO appear to be a very understanding, decent and willing bunch of people however, as they correctly stated, ANSTO is a scientific body, not a land management group. The rep from Gandangara explained that future use of their land is currently undergoing a negotiating process with a proposed plan to be released for public comment in the near future.

As previously stated, while no real decisions were made it was a great opportunity to discuss various perspectives and ascertain exactly why the trail closures are now being enforced and the circumstances that caused this to be the case. Various slides of illegal constructions were displayed; these included North-Shore style ramps and other obstacles and highlighted exactly how much damage has been caused in terms of trees being cut down, trenches being dug, things being nailed to trees, rocks being relocated, carpeted ramps being constructed in the middle of walking trails, the see-saw and so on. In addition damage caused to the trail by motorbikes was highlighted; interestingly the moto fraternity was not represented at the meeting, this being of no great surprise to the council reps.

ANSTO also voiced concerns in regard to public liability; not only that incurred by riders in the course of a cycling accident, but by cyclists injuring bushwalkers or ANSTO staff who may be in the area in the course of their work.

This process will most likely be a long and protracted one, given the myriad of perspectives and legislation that will need to be waded through. I strongly urge everyone to refrain from riding in the area so as to demonstrate to the other stakeholders that we as mountain bikers are respectful of the process that must be undertaken in order to secure possible access. If you are a person contemplating organising a protest ride please DO NOT engage in this activity; it would at best be counter-productive.

I'm sure others present at the meeting will provide further info. If you have any questions please feel free to post them up and I'll answer them if I can.

Do you have more information?

If you've ridden here lately please add a more recent report. This will be useful even if the condition is the same as updates expire after 30 days.
Please do not post comments with such information - post a new update with the link above.

Hi Guys,

Just a heads up that the 50km for the KC has alreeady sold out and the 100km has less than 50 spots left I believe!

As a result the organisers have extended the early bird offer for the 100km until the 12th June! Looks like I'll be doing my first 100km event in October!!

Hope to see some of you there!
