the link from Bernd looks good. Not much rainfall this week and clear and sunny on sat and sunday.
Lets hope so, i dont fancy riding 110km in wet/muddy conditions

Hopefully the rain doesn't raise the level of the free bike wash too much as it may become a free swim with your bike.

the physiotherapist today cause my back is "spasming" but should be right for the race

Nic's picture

Any experience on what tyres to use for the Fling - given the likely muddy conditions?

For the Mont I swapped out the Reign's OEM 2.3 Hutchinson Barracudas for 2.1 WTB Weirwolf, which worked great at Majura. Thinking of putting the Barracudas back on for the Fling though. Otherwise I have some 2.3 Larsen TTs.

Cheers

i think i will just stick to the crossmarks, they work well in most conditions and basically i am too lazy to buy new tyres and change them!!

Don

Carlgroover's picture

I also have a crossmark on the back which has good grip, is light and rolls well, but think something more aggressive on the front would be the go I'll have an IRC serac.

Are most people intending to go down Saturday afternoon and stay over - camping or what?

Nic

pikey's picture

... Yes most if not all are heading down Sat morning/midday setting up camp sites and then getting on the piss Sticking out tongue

I,m heading down around 9 (to get on the piss sooner) so give me a call as you get there to find the NoBMoB camp.

this is from Farkin.net - sent by Huw to a farkin member to post

The Word from On Highlands.......

Q's:
Is it wet?
Is the Fling still on?
Will you cancel the race?
Can I change from Full to Half?
Can I change to Singlespeed to protect my drivetrain?
How do I dry my clothes if they get wet? (!!)

A's:
Yes. Yes. No. Yes (til 8pm today). Ditto. Ummh Arrgh........

So the Southern Highlands has had some moisture this week (probably 100mm in last 7 days). The forecast is trending very much towards a good day on Sunday with warmer weather (approx 20-22 C) and mainly fine (a chance of a shower but who knows!). There is absolutely no reason for the VAUDE Highland Fling not to go ahead. Bundanoon looks forward to welcoming you to VAUDE VILLE! The community groups are busy preparing food, the drinks are ordered, the band plays on........

As many of you will know, Fling Country drains well and is not generally muddy. Of course there will be some mud, there will be some damp paddocks and there will be some deeper creek crossings than usual. Sounds like great mountain biking. The Early Bath will be the only one to make you go 'Ouch'. That is why it is called the Early Bath.

Bring some lube*, throw in a rainjacket and look forward to seeing you on Saturday or Sunday

cheers

Huw Kingston

*There is the Rock & Roll Lube Bay at the Wingello Oval Transition Area for you to use. I must confess that much of the wax lube there is for dry conditions!

I did the same thing today.

I can do without 110 km of spray in the face (Allthough my face probably could use a sand blasting) Eye-wink

Good work everyone.
I loved it, well not the last 10km or so,
I was on track until then, 2h to the half mark.
km 40 still just over 3h, and then by km 48 I was f(*(*!!!.
did the rest at very slow pace.... ended up about 4-35h or so.
Look forward to the next 50km race, but can't see me doing a 100km, good onya guy's,
Respect, Respect, Respect to the "Big Boy's"!!!!
I love my new Sticker on my Bike, very COOL!!!

Paul's picture

Guys, thanks for a great weekend - My first race and I loved it.

The first 28k's sucked so much energy, the last 27k stage was a blast even though the last 8k's my thighs were cramping.
3hr 20 of riding time (probably 3.30 including transition)
Average speed 16.8kph (I'm happy with that)
Top speed 58.9kph
Average heart rate 162 bpm (95% of my maximum) higher than I wanted.

I'm so happy I pulled out of the 100k - all those that attempted the 100 are legends.

Buck's picture

Well done to everyone that did the Fling yesterday.
I only did the half and that was hard enough for me so much respect to all you loonies doing the full 110km! Sticking out tongue

I had a decent race up until the 45km mark. Was happily cruising along. Stopped at transition for 5 min and met Paul and Peter there. Went off and then at the 40km mark legs were not feeling so great and then up some climb soon after they cramped. Had to stop a few times to stretch but at least the last kilometre or two was downhill tarmac. Finished in a touch over 4hrs i think.

Either way still had fun and will train more for next year Smiling

lorrie's picture

Well done to all who did the 110km fling - hats off!

I did the 55km in about 3:15 or so. But if i had bothered to focus on my nutrition i might have gone faster. The legs were strong - just those cramps!!

Special mention to Tien who cracked 3 hours and a super human effort to Junkie who came in the top 15 or so for the half fling.

And another crazy mention to one of the first river crossings that was waist deep!

How did the full flingers go?

Lorrie

Rob's picture

Yeah, nice weekend - we were so lucky with the weather. Although that tacky ground through the fields and such surely didn't help.

You lot that finished the Full course did well - nice one! Sadly I wasn't with you, binning the last stage and taking the sag wagon home - but that was always sort of the plan Eye-wink

Just felt sick as a dog from maybe 40Km in, there's some waffle here if you want a read: Fling Minus Some.

Cheers,

Rob

Hats of to Shaun for his awesome effort. For someone who was sick, I'd hate to see what you are like when you are better. Smiling
To all the others, my hat is off for equally as awesome efforts.
At 10+ hrs in the saddle, I'm feeling rather sore today. Thanks to Leximack (Don) for the company for the last stage.

Learnt one major thing from this event, no more 100s until I'm much fitter. Well.... maybe one more, Dirt Works.

Evan

jedijunglesnow's picture

Does anyone know if the results are up anywhere? Their website doesn't seem to be working and I can't find anything anywhere.

evan's picture

Forgot to add this to my comments:
Having a bunch of friendly faces at the finish line, no matter how crap you feel, does make you feel good. So a big thanks to the guys that hung around to watch the stragglers to come in.
Leximack, I owe you a finish, thanks soo much for the company and moral support from the last stage.

Evan

Andrew's picture

Wow such a good event.
I really admire all those that gave the 110 a go. Hey and the 55 as well.
I had a shocker with leg cramps with the first one starting at only 20km in ( that's only a Terry Hills ride... What the.)
It gave me a chance to have a chat with every one on the side of the trail.
It was a very social ride.
Caro that OTB was terrible but funny at the same time. I stoped where I got another cramp and didn't even see the root in front of me. Then seeing you fligh over the bars while asking me if I was alright Shocked is an image that will stick with me for a very long time.
The camaraderie of the NobMobers at the finish at the start and during the event is brilliant.
Thanks to all for a great weekend.

Paul's picture

If anyone saw a Topeak Defender front mudguard on the track (used for 1/2 a race) it was mine.

Note: the Topeak can silently dis-engage mid ride and you will only notice it gone when mud starts flicking in the face - Blue loctite is recommended on the hex bolt.

Bernd's picture

.. luck with this one, only about !!?? rider's went past it!!!!!
Bernd

lorrie's picture

blue loctite is highly recommended...

Nice joke Paul! and for those of those that don't know. I now use Blue loctite on bolts where relevant so that they don't come off before races and hence ruin your WHOLE weekend...

Handed out with all Specialised MTB bikes by the box?
Cool

There were some longer comments on this thread, but have moved them to blog entries instead. I hope this doesn't confuse/annoy anyone, but what with the number of posts and comments on each of the longer stories thought it best.

The good news is that a table of related blog entries has been added to this thread (and every other ride meeting with them). These tables will hopefully become a regular thing on bigger outings as there's also now a link to add the related blog entry very easily.
