6.7 Reign?
Interesting... (erm, maybe, depending on your view)...
I was in Cranks (Alfred St, North Sydney) at lunchtime picking up a crank extractor.
No, that's not the interesting bit. They had a few Giant Trance '6.8' Reign 6.7 bikes there. Apparently these are limited release and have more travel (does the '6.7' refer to inches?) than the standard Trance Reign. They also had a spiffy carbon or graphite like paint job and decals.
Might be worth a look for those seeking something more DH orientated but with still a bit of XC ability.
Update Ooops... sorry, seems it's was a 6.7 Reign I was looking at. Doh! There's a story here:

Speed Debate Resolved
Someone was asking how Japan was... the answer is very nice thankyou. How did you know I was there? No secrets round here is the answer I guess
Anyhow, I've often said that I thought one could go a fair bit faster on skis then a bike but have come across some non-believers in my time.
The fastest time I've recored off road on a bike so far has been 54.4Km/h down part of the Tianjara Fire Trail:
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/1452504
Update: Ah, actually, I think faster was had from the helipad to gate on this run down The Oaks, looks like maybe 56-57Km/h:
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/1856460
Quicker still down the Causeway means the exact figure isn't shown (erm... that, and a crazy GPS error right at the end).
Over 40Km/h is routine at places like Cascades, but I believe the above is fastest in the MB digest. Maybe I'm just a wimp when off road... have hit over 70Ks on sealed stuff (coming down Black Mountain in Canberra) so those rocks and dirt must be hurting either the rolling resistance or one's sense of security
Whist in Japan though had the chance to ski with a GPS, and also on some fast runs - they were groomed to perfection in Shiga Kogen and as there was no snow during the day for the first few of the trip this landed some nice fast runs. The GPS shows that one can hit 50-60Km/h down just about any wide open run. It also shows that max speeds completely blitz a bike, day 3 here I managed 105.3Km/h:

Nice, eh? So there you go - skis will beat a bike any time (erm... that there is snow on the ground and it's a big slope!)

Ourimbah - Sat 3 March
Ah-ha!
By popular request (erm, see, sat feb 3rd ourimbah/mooney mooney) let us partake in a little XC and DH fun at what seems to be everyone's favourite spot... Ourimbah State Forest!
When: Saturday, March 3 - 9am at the carpark and ready to ride (ie. if you need some time to fart about and adjust your gear, get there earlier).
Where: Red Hill Forest Road, Ourimbah (about 1hr North of Sydney).
What: Play by ear, but some XC and DH action sounds like the order of the day.
Ourimbah is tops, as most people know by now. It's probably not for the newbies or faint of heart, but well worth the trip if you are neither. Depending on who shows there may be grounds for a split group but the turn out here is usually tops and a social time is had by all. Bring some beers and nibbles for after the ride if you feel like it and we can sit around and debate the crashes (is Matt going to be back by then?) afterwards

Saturday 17th Feb - Oxford Falls at 8:00 a.m.
Hello all,
I am assembling an early morning crew for an assault on Oxford Falls. Did you want to enlist? This won't be one of those crazy 6:30 a.m. starts. But neither will we be turning up for a midday cruise.
The weather forecast (um, so far) is average to good. Anyone interested, please post your attendance. This includes you Peter!
Park in the usual dirt carpark on Morgan Road. Hope to see you all there.

Actually you can make it a loop, but only if you borrow an abandoned boat and transport your bike across the dam. See http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/player/1634102

Buying second hand
Has anyone bought a second hand mountain bike? I know that there are good points and bad points, but looking for buying tips and just looking for the best deal. Seen a bike that I would really like for sale but concerned that the warrrenty wold not be valid and taht I do not have any rights if the bike is faulty. Feed back here is always great!

New Ride category - City HotSpots
I'm new around here, but let me know what you think of this...
We can't always get to one of those sweet locations (like Manly) as often as we would all like. If you're like me I like to ride a couple of nights a week after work. After all it is Daylight savings and a great way to keep fit for those epic weekend rides.
I live in Chatswood and the idea of riding on the road (BORING) just isn't that appealing. So about two months ago I opened google earth and started looking for green patches/parks in my area. After getting a rough idea of where they were I jumped on my bike and went exploring.

Cornering tips
Thought I had to share this as it seemed like a bit of a revelation to me yesterday!
I completely by accident discovered a cornering trick that works really well for me in tight singletrack and it made me at least 50% faster through the bends. OK everybody knows all the theory of how to corner properly, get your weight right and bike leaned over etc. but that's easier said than done. What worked really well to get me doing all this right was at every corner to try and get my inside elbow behind my inside knee, so say if you're turning right, try and get the inside of your right elbow to touch the outside of your right knee.
