Fuji Nevada V's Trek Mamba 29ers

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Gday, relatively new to riding and looking to buy a new 29er bike. Have narrowed it down to the Fuji Nevada and the Trek Mamba. I know very little about what to look for in terms of bike specs. Both are around the $1000 mark. Am looking for opinions on the bikes, good/bad, which is the better buy. Have test riden both and both feel quite comfortable. Thanks

Hi All,

I am new to the world of MTB'ing but enjoying the rides I have done so far up at the goat farm on my mates Giant Yukon, so much so that I have convinced the minister for finance (wife) to let me buy a new bike to the value of $3000.

I know what type of riding I want to be doing so I don't need any info on that (unless you think it will help, XC cape to cape style)and I have narrowed down my choice of bike to the 2 following:

2012 Specialized Camber Comp 29er
2012 Giant Anthem X 1 29er

Fork service?

I've put about 1,500kms/75 hrs on my 6 month old MTB, and wondering if I should be thinking about servicing the forks? They are Rockshox Recon Gold Air, and the manual says to clean bushings/replace oil bath/lubricate air spring @ 50hrs, and change oil in damping system @ 100hrs.

What's the view on this - are the manufacturers just playing safe, or is it really advisable to follow their service intervals closely? I've noticed no issues as such, and understand it's an expensive job, so I don't want to do it unnecessarily.

Disk brakes

Can you mix brands when it comes to brakes?
For example put shimano rotors on an Avid system?
Does it fit and will it work?

Logging into the MTBA website.

Does anyone else have problems logging into the MTBA website? I seem to have half a dozen membership numbers and even when I try to log in with a new password that they have emailed me it still comes up with an error message. It seems to be a real mess.

I was trying to join a club online but it seems you have to go through the horrible MTBA site to do so. When I signed up for the 12 Hour event there were similar issues.

Opinions or fixes anyone?
