Showing off Sydney's best AM trails. Where to go?

My brother is staying with us for a long weekend and is bringing his bike. He rides a Rocky Mountain Slayer and is into technical riding with a few jumps thrown in.

I only really know the xc trails so wondered if I could get a few recommendations on where the best AM trails would be. I can really only think of Ourimbah but I'm sure there are other places.

P.S. he lives in Christchurch so I need him to go back thinking we have as good trails as they do!

Thanks, Pete

Give back to the trails by coming on a dig day! Plus weed spread prevention.

Bermage

There's a fair chance that many reading this will have had a blast on their local trails this weekend. That's all good, but did you ever wonder who put those trails there in the first place? Yes, yes... I'm sure many of you already know the answer: the mythical Trail Fairies Eye-wink

Good as those fairies are though, sometimes they need a hand in their work. So we're just putting a gentle request out there: please consider coming along to help out on one of the upcoming maintenance days.

RSVP to a dig day organised by your local land manager, show up and lend a hand. Hard work, but more fun than you'd think. And there's nothing more satisfying than riding on a track that you helped maintain or improve.

A reminder of trail days coming up in the next few weeks:

OMV Maintenance Session - Sat 7 Sep @ 2pm
Yellomundee RP - track maintenance - Sat 14 Sep @ 8:30am
Manly Dam - trail maintenance afternoon - Sat 21 Sep @ 1pm

Preventing Weed Spread

While we're on the topic of trail care, there's been some new talk in the forum about weed spread. See Phytophthora cinnamomi.(dieback). This might be a good time to mention that weeds and other nasties can be spread between trails when picked up on your bike. Land managers like National Parks & Mt Annan Botanical Garden are always keen to communicate the message of prevention:

  • Try to avoid riding in wet conditions, which cause more mud/debris to cling to your bike.
  • Always wash your bike/shoes/etc. after riding.
  • Preferably wash your bike at the trail head - keep the soil you picked up in the area.
  • Preferably disinfect your bike by spraying with 70% methylated spirits diluted with water.
  • If you prefer to wash your bike at home, do so on a hard surface away from grass, etc.

Back pain

Hi all

I've been having a bit of lower back pain when riding recently - particularly on longer rides with a bit of climbing. Just thought I'd see if anyone has any tips on things I should be checking for or if anyone has had a similar problem. Wondered if I need to my riding position/geometry or if I just need to build up some more strength in my back!

Cheers
Steve

Specialized Epic S-Works VS Specialized Epic Marathon Carbon 13'

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi All,

Looking at the new 14' models coming through shortly, I've been trying to buy my new ride and after talking to Bike shops and working out prices and what not, I'm stuck on which bike to get

As per the heading I'm tossing up between the 13' S-works and Marathon models and If anyone has any personal experiences with either ride, Id love to hear it

I'm looking at about a 2,000 - 2,500 difference and an wondering if your getting that much worth getting the S-works over the Marathon, Being a lot of money I'm trying to be 100% sure before I go ahead

Thanks,

After riding the KC trails today, noticing all the muddy and wet areas and the bike needing a good rinse after the ride it made me think about Phytophthora cinnamomi.(dieback)

Re stanning a Tubles - having valve issues.

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Folks,

Having recently "dethorned" my back tubles tire and got it back on full of stans the value is pissing air from where the valve meets the rim. Ive tried reseating it, I fiddled and its isnt working, so the question is - is it a case of maybe there is left over crap from the previous or some thing or do I need to get a new valve?

Thanks

Yarg

Looking for ridiculously easy single track in the area

I've got a friend who loves MTB but hasn't been in years. He's out of shape, just out of surgery, etc. I'm looking for something with carparks at both ends and mostly downhill. If you have any recommendations please advise on bike requirements. Currently all he has is a 1980s rigid.

As a side note I'm on a Norco Bigfoot. Is there anything interesting to hit up in the inner west?

Calling All Trials Riders

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi there trials people! Got a few questions for you.

I've been wanting to take up trials riding for many years - before mtb actually and am wondering how much difference a dedicated trials bike actually makes? Like does it really make track standing pivoting that much easier. Where does a trials bike really come into its own over a mtb. its probably quite a stupid question becasue of sheer size, weight and geometry but i'm tossing up weather i need to get one to sort of start jumping around and what not...

So, I've had my old DH frame kicking around for ages. Put it up for sale once or twice with no interest. So it's been just cluttering up my shed and as the young bloke has been getting more and more into riding and smashing rims and what not on the DH trails on his xc bike it's been in the back of my mind to build it up for him.

Going through some of the bits and pieces I had left over from the shop I realised I had most of the things it needed on hand.

Any rides going on this weekend in the blue mountains? (31/8 - 1/9)

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hey guys, i'm living at the foot of the mountains and have been travelling to Grose Vale to ride a semi DH track which is very fun however I've been going alone and i'd prefer to ride in a group if i could. i'm available Saturday and Sunday this weekend but mostly Sundays. If any other people are looking for riding companions as well that'd be great if we could tee something up there.
any response to this would be great!
cheers

Leonardi Racing Kit General Lee 11/40 cassette kit

Can't find original post where someone asked about the above kit so will start a new post. I'll put my impressions of the kit up here and any problems/issues. I've just fitted the system and have not ridden it seriously so this is just setting the scene. This kit changes the gearing on a SRAM 10 speed 11-36 cassette to an 11-40, 10 speed. It is also compatible with the front ring from a SRAM 1 x 11 but keeps all the standard shifting gear. For Shimano the kit is different and turns it into an 11-42 cassette.

Taken out by a Wallaby

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

The key point is that if you hear Wallabys when riding particularly at night, it would be great to stop. The second is that riding alone at night in the bush really should be done with a lot of care.
