Tips on racing using heart rate monitor
Hi
Have been riding a few years now and aiming to race a bit more. My efforts so far have all had a general theme of fading badly and/or cramping at the end of races (examples include half fling, 4 hour enduro type races, 3 man 24hr teams).
Clearly a large part of this is training (increased and more effective) and nutrition during the event (and flexibility, core etc..), but i have recently started using a heart rate monitor and am interested in:
1. Do people race using heart rate monitors? If not, how do you pace beyond 3 hours?
2. If you do, at what level/metric do you use?
phone found in Wallaroo
Hi all,
Was riding in Wallaroo National Park yesterday and found a phone on a trail.
If it is yours, PM me with some details about the phone to prove it is yours.
It seems to be in working condition but I can't unlock the screen to try and learn who the phone belongs to. I reckon was lost on Sat 21st Sept.
Is a fair chance it belongs to a moto rider. If you know any that ride in Wallaroo let them know about this post.

Ex Downhiller looking for a new bike
Hi Team..
I've been been a downhiller for most of my cycling years and have recently given it up for lack of value.. (tired of 2 minute runs and then 20 minutes pushing) Sooo.... I would like to buy a mid range travel bike that I can pedal some distance but still be able to bomb it down some single trail and a few jumps... I have a 2012 XTC with slicks that I commute on and rarely take to the trails (kalamunda etc) but am looking for something more fun with more travel. Anyway, with all this in mind I have my eye on this years new Giant Trance Advanced 1.
Larool Trail Rock Garden
I was out riding the south side of Terrey Hills today and came across a pretty significant upgrade on the Larool Trail.
From the North end after you cross the creek they've laid tonnes of sandstone and sand to create one hell of a rock garden.
Having only ridden this trail once before I'm guessing that this area gets pretty nasty from the horse stud runoff. While this certainly makes it nicer to ride .. MY GOD IT STINKS. Worse than a public toilet.
They need to do this at the top end of the Sandy Trail.
Chainsaw massacre Mona Vale Sniggle
Whats happened near Wildflower on the Mona Vale sniggle? All the trees have been cut down for around 50 mtr stretch. They were probably all dead and full of disease anyway. Its quite bizarre riding though it. They have left all the wood lying around but the track is clear. Also looks like substantial trail fairies. Nice work on the rock placements across the puddle (the puddle has dried up also).
Motorbikes on duck hole
Just came by 3 motorbikes on duck hole number plate
WGO
Not sure if legit or not
Other 2 had no number plate

Talk about how to overtake?
Does anybody know that guy who was riding Manly dam today at 1.30pm, wearing a red top, black camel back and knee/shin guards?
I overtook him on my first lap before the golf course single track but then he caught me up and I immediately asked him if he wanted to overtake me to which he replied yes. So I went to the right and shouted to my left. However, he stayed behind my wheel so I slowed down even more and said again, to my left. He still stayed behind my wheel. So I asked him whether he wanted to overtake me or not.
Bike Box Hire
Is there a bike store on the Northshore/Northern Beaches that hire bike boxes at a reasonable price? Alternatively, does anyone have a bike box that I'd be able to borrow for a week? Otherwise, I will be resorting to a cardboard bike box.
Also, anyone who regularly travels with a bike, should I be taking out travel insurance to cover any damage in transit on the plane? If so, what insurance do you usually use?
I am heading up to uni games on the Gold Coast for a week, which runs from the 29th September to 4th October. Unfortunately, they only do road cycling.
Thanks
New set of wheels? what to go for?
hey guys, ive just had a decent altication with one of those moving trees, really hate it when they just appear infront of me haha.
ok down to business
after buckling the front rim pretty badly on the trance, and an ok pay check from work, im in the market for a new set of rims
my budget is at a max of 450 with no movement really so im looking for the most reliable option i can, remembering they may cop some abuse.
Mini pump lost
No biggie guys but did anyone find a mini-pump between Frenchs Forest and Roseville yesterday or today?
Cheers

Superb customer care....for once
Hey guys, we;re always quick to knock poor service but for once I'd like to give a big shout out to someone doing it right.
I recently bought a T-shirt online from NZO which I'd wanted for some time.
Not a massive deal but still 40 bucks worth.
It turned up in good time and was exactly what I wanted except it was too small for me...I'd ordered a medium and probably should have gone large.
Affiliate Deals for 20 Sep
While we encourage everyone to support local bike shops, and in particular our local sponsors, Bike Addiction and Bicycles Online... it's understandable people shop around for deals.
To that end, here's a few coupons from the list of our online affiliates.
Knapsack DH officially opens this Saturday!
Please excuse the cross-post, but our friends over in BMORC have some great news worth spreading - The Knapsack Reserve DH track will officially open this weekend.
This Saturday the 21st at 9:30am Blue Mountains Council will be doing the official opening ceremony of the Knapsack DH track. This should include some councillors and BMCC officials and staff that have been involved or interested in the project.
Meet either at the gate on Barnett St of Lovers Walk or at the Trail head sign at the track head at 9:45am.
As if riders keen for some gravity fuelled action needed more encouragement, their post (see Official Opening of Knapsack DH This Saturday 21st September) mentions they are trying to get a BBQ going too.
Get on up there and enjoy!
Anyone heading to the WSMTB XC round this Sunday?
Anyone heading out to west sydney for the xc round this weekend? I should be heading out and can carpool together if anyone is interested.
Overtaking
So - we have The Scott upon us very shortly, and have just come out of a fantastic Rocky Trail Grand Prix series. There is still the Singletrack Mind series going on.
One thing that is always a bit of a pain is the etiquette of 'Over-taking'.
I have suffered a bit in some races behind slower riders, but probably no more than any other 'Elite' rider. Some recent events where things really got a bit out of hand had me thinking about it.
Rydal MTB Garmin Map anyone?
Heading to Bathurst this weekend to for a ride with a mate, does anyone have Garmin connect map I could use for the Rydal trails?
Cheers
Scott 25 2013
Hello,
haven't seen much banter about this years Scott 25 Hr at Mt Stromlo. I've entered in a 2 man team for the 6+7 category this year.
I know a few of us from here are going. But not much chatting.
I love the hour glass configuration. My favourite is skyline followed by the Luge on the red lap.
Looks like were missing out on Internal velocity this year, but getting double dissolution & partyline on the blue lap. Unfortunately I doubt we'll get anywhere near the top or nowhere near podium....but I know a few riders from here will probably take out the 6+ 7 category outright.
Bike weight.
What does your bike weigh?
What bike is it and do you have any fancy schmancy parts on it? Mention if it's 26er or 29er.
Trying to get some idea of what is "normal".
Catch 22 AM Dually
I am in the fortunate position to pick between a Yeti SB66C X01 and an Intense Carbine 275 X01, any suggestions?
Converting from Avid to Shimano brakes
I need to pick your brains.
I'm thinking about switching the Elixir 9s to XT brakes on the new sled and I'm wondering whether I need to change the adapters as well, or will the Shimanos go straight on? IS-to-post mount on the fork (Lefty) and post mount on the rear. The Avids presently have that bunch of shaped washers to provide 3D alignment options and getting the caliper height aligned properly on the brake track is my concern.
Hornsby Cycles closure
A rather strange facebook update this arvo (indicating that they were too busy to keep going?) from Hornsby Cycles , they are closing up shop after recently moving from their prime spot near the OMV trail head.
Always found them to be helpful, would order things in that they didn't have stock of for me, often at very competitive prices. Shame to see them exit the scene, at least for now.

Rideeye Cycling 'black box'
Given other discussions going on around here, this could be a timely project:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rideye/ridey...
What makes this interesting is that it has claimed 12 hour battery life, and records a 1 hour continuous loop which is saved at the press of a button or if the unit detects a crash.
Little heavy at 300g, but it's built to survive a crash and the price is good.
Any backers?
Bike transport options with Hire Car
Getting down to planning for my first MTB race travel/holiday event at the Cape to Cape. I'm flying to Perth then hiring a car to drive to Margaret River and would like to know if anyone has had any experience with travelling in a hire car with bike? I am assuming the boxed bike will fit in the back (have hired RAV 4 or similar) for the trip down from the airport but will need to get from accommodation to start and back each day plus would love to keep the bike assembled for the few days we plan to spend exploring the region after the race to sneak in some more riding.
Cascades Wildlife
The local wildlife is out in force. Yesterday almost ran over a Green Tree snake on the middle bitumen hill up Cascades. Freaked me out as wasnt sure what is was and small head looked angry. Then he reared up and turned into the bush after I got a photo. Then tonight thought I saw a bandicoot, but it hopped. Just looked it up and it was a Long Nosed Potoroo (size of a rabbit, but not a rabbit) - very rare.
