Gee Atherton - Red Bull Foxhunt 2013

http://youtu.be/p3xeDWkAiqI

Madness! Eye-wink Laughing out loud

Red Bull Foxhunt went off with a bang in Rostrevor with 400 hounds (mountain bikers) being chased hard by World Cup Downhill legend, Gee Atherton.

Last year only one rider managed it but this year 30 out foxed the Fox. First place went to Colin Ross who thundered into the finish line arena with a good lead ahead of last years winner Greg Callaghan of Dirt Norco with Joe Barnes of the Dudes of Hazzard in third.

NSW State Forests Total Fire Ban no closures

FYI,

While there is a total fire ban in place today in all NSW State Forests, they remain open for mountain biking, confirmed by phone call this morning with State Forest head office.

This said, if you are heading out for a ride in a State Forest today it might pay to check first just in case they decide to close one or more forests at short notice.

Mind you it's so bloody hot I can't imagine it would be very nice riding around anyway.

Extreme fire danger & closures for Sydney National Parks

Today (October 10) RFS and NPWS are reporting an extreme risk of fires in many National Parks in Sydney and surrounds.

Eg. for Garigal National Park (Oxford Falls, Cascades, Bantry Bay):

ALL WALKING TRACKS AND TRAILS CLOSED THURSDAY 10TH OCTOBER

Due to the high fire danger predictions, all walking tracks and trails will be CLOSED ON THURSDAY 10th OCTOBER. Picnic areas will be open and the public may only use the gas/electric barbeques supplied by the National Park.

Locations affected: Cascades trail, Heath and Bare Creek trails, Pipeline and Davidson Trails, Natural Bridge track to Davidson Park, Davidson Park to Stepping Stone Crossing walk, Stepping Stone Crossing to Cascades

Many other parks around Sydney have similar warnings. West Head road in Ku-ring-gai Chase is closed for example which will mean access to many tracks in that park is impossible.

Broken Collarbone on Oaks

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Grant Shatford I headed up to Woodford on Sunday to film me for the new Oaks TrailFlix video.

About 7km in (just after St Helena junction), we came across two guys walking their bikes. I asked what the issue was, and expecting a broken chain etc, one bluntly replied “broken collarbone.“

No-tow-bar bike rack for sedan?

Hi all. Just hooked myself granny's old car. Ford Focus 2003 sedan. No tow bar. Can anyone recommend a good no-tow-bar bike rack that will fit this vehicle and accommodate (ideally) at least two heavy big bikes? Does such a thing even exist? I think I've seen them around - are they any good or a joke? Many thanks,

Energy Gels

I've been using energy gels for awhile now and always feel rubbish in my stomach during and after training. I'm even down to just one gel just before I hit the trails but still have a niggling stomach ache, though very dull. Anyhow, my main question is what is the alternative? I've been thinking about using natures (fruit, nuts etc) own but not sure which foods will give me what I need. Any advice out there would be appreciated. Cheers

Tyres

Any idea on tyres for trails around Sydney. I've been running Nobby Nick's but I am absolutely destroying the sidewalls way before the treads wear down. Probably due to my riding but if there's anyone out there who has had the same trouble and have found an alternative would be keen on knowing.

Riding in Dural

I'm heading to Dural during the long weekend and it's not somewhere I've explored much. Does anyone know of any trails around that area that would warrant throwing the bike onto the rack before I go?

Cheers!

Pre Race diet

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Hi all,

Now the Highland Fling is approaching, it's time for me to make some serious decisions. First of all, should I enter? Well that‘s still got a question mark as I just had the pleasant surprise that I have an exam at 9:30am the next morning. Bloofy bad timing!
But on the assumption that I DO do the ‘Fling, I'm looking more at the nutrition front and wondering what other people do in terms of the diet.

Hey Rob,

Sad days for mtb riding here in melburg. While you’re enjoying trail upgrades over there, we are going backwards. I got back from 3 weeks in Tokyo 1 ½ weeks ago, holidays were awesome.
Went for my 1st ride in 5 weeks last wkend to find that parks victoria has bulldozed most of the jumps and all the bigger jumps at Lysterfield. Apparently, due to the number of people being carted off in ambulances.
So thanks to all the idiots who can’t read the signs at the head of the advanced trails, warning them of obstacles, and proceed to fuck up, my local trails are fucked.

Hubs: an unpaid endorsment

OK, Hubs a little unglamorous but pretty important. A few brands seem to get all the rave reviews but as I was doing some maintenance after the week end it struck me just how good mine were.

This is a Hadley DHS XL 150. I first built it into a wheel in 2005 on my Cove Peeler. Cost a fortune at the time but they were a hub I'd always wanted to try.

It's had a few rim replacement, been on another 2 frames (Norco A Atomkic and now the M6) and hasn't had one single bit of maintenance.

Zip, nil, nothing, Not a drop off oil, a bit of grease or even a pull down to clean.

Bike cleaning

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Just wondering what you guys use to clean your bikes with? I'm using Truck Wash which does get the bike clean but am having trouble with my disk brakes not working as well and squealing a bit (new model XTs, not Avid btw) and wonder if the wash is leaving a residue on the disks. Once you get a bit of heat in the rotors they're fine again but do wonder if washing is the culprit.
