SRAM XX1

I've been using SRAM XX for a few years but my new bike arrives in 3 weeks and I've been given the choice of running Shimano XTR in 2 x 10 like my current setup or the SRAM XX1. I haven't paid any attention to XX1 as I haven't had a need to until now and just assumed a 1x system would only suit those with legs of steel like our elite racers.

I would love to hear from those who have made the change and how they have found it. Especially those who don't finish the 100km races in 4hrs as the 4hr guys legs are in no way like mine Smiling

MTB Marathon vs. 3 hour exam

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Now in the middle of my final exams of my second year of Electrical Engineering, I thought I'd share a rather amusing comparison between the course of an engineering exam and mountain bike marathon and realized that they are basically the same thing! I got to compare these close up having my first exam at 9:30am the day after the Highland Fling last week and hope you will find it funny. Enjoy.

FLING: Spend all the previous weeks in intense training.
EXAM: Spend all the previous weeks in intense studying.

Optus coverage at Ourimbah, Awaba and Glenrock ?

Hi all,

I'm thinking of a MTB week away soon and wondered whether Ourimbah, Awaba, and Glenrock each get reliable Optus mobile reception?

Thanks in advance,

KT

Deliberately lit fires LCNP

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

While riding back through LCNP today, complaining silently to myself how unfit I am. I started to smell smoke. Couldn't see any thing down in the valley. As I got to the top of the climb, rounded a corner there were the Fire Brigade, and Police. So I stopped to ask what was going on, they pointed to a fire on the other side of the river. Told me they had already put out 3 deliberately lit fires to morning. Asked me if I had seen anyone, and what was the best way to get down there. They also said they are down here every couple of weeks putting out fires.

Shimano GP series

Seeing I can't do the Mont next year I wouldn't mind having a crack at something else and the dates for the Rocky Trail Shimano GP series seem to fit OK with my work peaks and troughs.

So I'm thinking the four hour series in a team of two would be good.

Anyone up for it? I'm looking at either masters or supermasters.

Riders wanted!

Hey guys,

Any locals doing a regular social ride of dam, red hill or orimbah that wouldn't mind a piss drinking Irish guy tagging along?
Crew I used to bike with have stopped. I bike the dam regular enough as it's local and do orimbah all mountain and dh trails when I get the chance.

Ayup Light Upgrades

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

I'm considering upgrading my Ayup lights (2009 versions) and was wondering if anyone has any feedback on this.
Looking at upgrading the intermediate light on the bars for the new "flood" version from Ayup.

Cheers,

Chris.

Bearings on the north side?

So I've got the day off due to rain and I've taken the bearings out of my lefty front hub for replacement.
I've gone to the usual Lager Bearings in Artamon and they've relocated to Thornleigh. Another bearing shop on the same street have relocated to Silverwater!
Anyone know of any others that are around the North shore?

Mont 24 Hour Race 2014

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Entries are now open for the 2014 running of the Mont 24 Hour Race.

The MONT is a classic weekend of mountain biking and the largest event of its type in Australia. It is a must-do event for first timers and hard core mountain bikers alike. We invite you to enter a team of four or six riders and experience one of Canberra’s most popular ride locations. While there’s plenty of racing to be had, the MONT is also a pretty laid back event, so if you don’t take your performances too seriously, rest assured you won’t be alone. Here's what you can expect.

Bigger rubber combi question

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Ok, being a self proclaimed rubber freak (After all, they're the interface between you, your bike & that nasty dirt stuff)I have a question.
What tyres do you aggressive riders use for Kalamunda?

I am especially interested in those who ride the black runs & ride UP the hills as well, rather than those who purely ride down them on heavy kit then get ferried back to the top.

The Invisible helmet (not for Mountain bikers)

Thoughts?

imo, if they could make them very cheap they could be a great option for tourists and those who are just difficult and don't like to wear them.

After getting into a couple of pack riding situations in the Fling, it quickly became clear to me and those around me, that I'm a bad person to ride with.

This year's Highland Fling: a true hardman's race? What was your take?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Fling Morning

The reports are starting to trickle in, and today's race down in Bundanoon was one for the hardmen - and hard women - by the sound of it.

One of the biggest Marathons of the year, the Fling always draws a great field, who this year were joined on the start line by a world tour road pro - bet you are wondering how he went? Eye-wink Throw in a whole lot of wet and windy stuff and the recipe looks a treat for those who like to read of adversity, and of overcoming.

If you were down in Bundanoon today we'd love to hear how you went. Why not share in a blog entry linked to our 2013 Highland Fling page. Include your result to get it built into a local leader board and history in your profile.

All the stories are always appreciated by those of us who couldn't make it! Smiling

Advice is sought on weight advantages and make of rim and hub combinations if possible. My budget would be $500- $700

Menai / Lucas Heights - Its getting close to opening again!!

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Just a note to say that Menai is very close to becoming open again!!! There was a ride day yesterday for the volunteers who have been doing the trail building (upto around 9kms at the moment) of nearly all new trails.

There is more information available on their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Menai-MTB-Park-pr... and for anyone who has ridden there previously, its looking good. It has similar feel to how it was originally but with better trail construction.
