Plans for Glenrock 2014??

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Apart from the great work done on Shaft, 2013 has been a bit dismal for Glenrock...with the 'closure' of the southern trails I expected NPWS to be able to apply more resources to 'maintaining and improving the northern trails'. Lately all I have seen is an increase in illegal trail modification, wet weather damage, motorbikes, erosion and and a bag of rubbish at the picnic table that has been there for months...
Is there any positive news for 2014? Every time I ride Awaba it shits me how good Glenrock could be...

Corroding nipples

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Anyone else had the problem of corroding nipples (wheel nipples!!) on their alloy nippled carbon rims? Just had the third one go on my Roval SL wheel, and looks like half the rest ready to let go to.

see here for longish ongoing discussion on failures in Enve Rim nipples (and others) http://forums.mtbr.com/wheels-tires/enve-wheel-n...

Another interuption to training !@**%^&!!

Bike pedals

NB: Originally posted elsewhere on the Global Riders Network and appears via syndication.

Hi All,

I'm sure you have all probably seen this question a few times, but I'd like some advise if possible

I'm looking for pedals similar to the Crank Brothers Eggbeaters but possible in a cheaper price frame, any suggestions? or would it be best to stick with a brand such as that?

Cheers,

Bike lights

With the new addition to our family, it will force me to ride more of a night. It will mainly be Manly Dam, I know a few of you already ride it of a Wednesday night, so just wondering what lights you guys are using and how you are finding them.

I had a pair of AyUps, which I didnt find to bad, but just looking at others that may be an option.

Happy to spend good coin for quality lights.

eg NightRider etc

ARRRGHH - Reverb Seat post issues

For the life of me I cannot fit the remote on to the handlebars. I think there is either a bolt missing or my shifter (LX with display) is in the way.
Im looking to bother the people who may have been in the same boat as me as I swear there is a bolt missing.
Otherwise I have to hang my head in shame and go to the LBS who are so used to seeing me when I buy stuff online and having to get them to fit it.
Any help would be appreciated, otherwise it's going to the classifieds Sad

Pivot bikes

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Im contemplating upgrading from my current ride (a Giant Trance 29er) to a Pivot - I particularly like the idea of the long suspension travel, whilst maintaining rideability on hills they claim on the Firebird and Mach 5.7 models.

Is this fan fare media / advert hype or does the quality and build reflect what I assume would be a hefty price tag?

Have there been any reports of riders being attacked or trail sabotage at OMV?

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I was riding at OMV today and towards the end of Turkey Royal I had a large branch fall in my path. I was lucky that the branch fell parallel to the trail so I essentially drove it down the track rather than went over it.

I got a shock when I looked at the GoPro footage because the branch moved very quickly.

Due to the speed and light conditions its not crystal clear however for 1-2 seconds the footage shows a large dead branch stationary on the upper side of the hill and just as I approach it violently rotates and flys out onto the trail.

Excellent Tathra Trails !

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Just spent a 3 nights in Tathra recently and just wanted to put it out there that this little beach town have some amazing trails that is well worth the 5-6hours drive from Sydney.
The trails have excellent flow and in need for some riders to ride them. Expect fast flowy section with lots of steep ride down the gully section on "the bridges" and "no second thoughts"

Merry Christmas all, what did Santa bring?

As per the title.

Merry Christmas to all, now more importantly, what did Santa bring?

I received a pair of XT pedals to replace a well worn pair of 520s

Merry Christmas

While I am thinking about it, Merry Christmas to everyone I've chatted to and ridden with this year and to the rest of you as well.

If you don't celebrate Christmas, then have a happy festive season.

Cheers

Single speed

I been toying with the idea of building up a single speeder.

What I want to know is: would it be better to buy a frame that you can adapt from being a single speeder to a cassette driven bike using spacers or if its better just to get the real deal. Has anyone had any experience with this?

Also toying with the notion of looking at a titanium frame.Any recommendations or thoughts?

Thanks

Back Treatment Specialist Recommendations

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

I have been suffering lately from lower back pain from disc bulge or degeneration. I had a laminectomy in the same spot in 2000. The back has been good till Sept 2013, but started to go downhill. I can hardly bend forwards and can't sit for a long time. I have been doing some core work, but pain persists and gets worse as the day progresses. I can still ride up to 2 hours, but am not so great afterwards.

29er wheel destruction

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Just looking for a few thoughts on wheel-related events over the past few weeks.

Last weekend I'm out riding oxford falls and hit a rock pretty hard. 29 inch Roval Traverse wheel from a pretty much brand new stumpy evo 29er completely destroyed. I'm thinking fair enough- I hit it hard and killed a rim. Move on. (although i've never done it on a 26 inch rim).

Garigal NP/Bantry Bay to get authorised trails - it's official!

Back in June it was announced that NPWS had put out for comment amendments to Garigal National Park that, amongst other things, included provision for an authorised trail at Bantry Bay (see Garigal NP/Bantry Bay Proposed Trails - Act Now!).

The great news is that yesterday these amendments were officially announced and include a map of proposed trails pretty much unchanged from that put out for comment (see attached).

The full plan with these amendments can be found on-line at the Environment & Heritage site here:

http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/parkmanagement...

It includes some nice phrases such as...

Easily accessible mountain bike riding is also provided for in Garigal National Park. This activity will be enhanced by the purpose-built track proposed for construction in the Bantry Bay area of the park. There are opportunities to link tracks in the park to adjacent natural areas, thus creating a district track network.

The experience provided will be an authorised, cross-country / all-mountain mountain bike route, approximately seven to ten kilometres in length as shown on Map 4. The track will comprise mostly a 'one-way' route from beginner up to intermediate levels. The route will include attractive landscape features, such as view points. It will allow separation of mountain bike riders from bushwalkers. It will be supported by basic local government visitor infrastructure such as car parking space and toilets and will aim to attract local and regional visitors who may wish to enjoy a few hours exploring the park and surrounds.

Happy days Smiling

Not as light as Dicko’s!

Below is a preview, click to read the full post

Back in April I changed from my FRM enduro I’d been on for nearly 3 years to the Whyte M109S. Sure it was heavier but I love the geometry and the 29” wheel size for enduro’s. So while I was totally in love with my FRM I soon fell in love with my Whyte. I spec’d the bike with SRAM XX and FRM components to take weight out and have had an awesome time on a bike that races well, takes rough hits and drops and also handles mud well, being a UK brand.
